Firaxis Games announced Thursday that it has announced a new lineup of games - Sid Meier's Great Battles series - and will continue its American Civil War games with Sid Meier's Antietam, due out in the fall.

Antietam will use the Gettysburg game system and an improved version of the Gettysburg engine, while offering a host of new types of troops, new terrain features, and hypothetical and full-day battle scenarios.

"Since the release of Gettysburg! fans have been requesting that we continue our tradition of innovative and immersive battle games, and Sid Meier's Antietam! is just the beginning of an exciting new series," said Jeff Briggs, president of Firaxis Games. "This Great Battles Series places gamers, history buffs, and Civil War enthusiasts directly on the battlefields of some of the most famous conflicts in history."

Interestingly enough, the game - and presumably the rest of the Great Battles series - is going to be self-published by Firaxis Games and can only be purchased through its web site (or mail order probably). Origin and Electronic Arts previously published Sid Meier's Gettysburg! and Alpha Centauri. No price for Antietam has been set yet.
