Shogun 2: Total War marching out March 15

Sega to release Creative Assembly's latest Sengoku-era action strategy title on PC early next year.

Sega cashed in on the 2010 Electronic Entertainment Expo hype to announce the latest installment in Creative Assembly's long-running Total War franchise, Shogun 2, for the PC. A return to its roots, Shogun 2 will revisit the era that launched the franchise in 2000, and Sega announced today just when gamers can begin brandishing their bushido blades: March 15, 2011.

The Sengoku-period fires will burn anew in March.

For Shogun 2, Creative Assembly will be returning to 16th-century Japan, during the tumultuous Sengoku period. Players assume the role of a Daimyo, or clan leader, who must engage with fellow warlords, be it through conflict or diplomacy, to reunite the sundered island nation.

As for changes under the hood, Creative Assembly noted that it has made substantial refinements to the game's artificial intelligence, "developed according to Sun Tzu's principles in the Art of War." Those who prefer matching their battle acumen against living, breathing opponents will also have a number of new multiplayer modes, which support up to eight in competitive and cooperative engagements.

The studio has also introduced a new character progression system with Shogun 2, allowing gamers to assume leadership of one of nine clans and level up their own warlords and emissaries through battle. Other features played up by the studio include deformable terrain based on weather conditions, as well as coastal battles in naval combat.

oh i just hope it will be better than ETW and NTW.. i hate those games, so stupid and bugy.. and hate the guns.. total war games are about swords and bows, horses charging intro spear walls and etc.. ah ROME, i miss you so very much.. rome total war FTW.

What luck, just started reading "The Art of War". Anyone else noticed how they chose a rather famous date for the release? I wonder if a certain famous roman influenced them :)

Anyone remember how badass warrior monks were in the original S:TW? Dudes would kill even while fleeing the battle. I don't want to sound pessimistic, but how could this possibly live up to the epicness that was S:TW? They've just face flopped too many times to get my hopes up again.

Enjoyed every total war to date minus the crashes that i have suffered since medieval 2 when the computer stacks the odds against you and you turn the battle due to tactics crashes before it finishes. I think everyone forgets the scale of these games and the detail is incredible. If the units are similar then it will rely more on the experience and the quality of the weapons that will improve the combat :)

I'm going to play a wait and see game with this one as I have been burned in both Napoleon and Empire Total War over the last few years. Both still crash on me and I'm not willing to go through that again. I'll wait and see if they actually finish the game this time.

I went to collect Empire on first day of release from pre-order and as others here have said, it took them a further 6 months to complete the game. Sega have really messed loyal fans of TW around. Shogun looks great but I'll wait for the reviews and then wait some more this time. PC gamers are treated so badly these days, Ubisoft's copy protection broke Silent Hunter etc etc

March does seem a little early. I was expecting it to come out at the earliest this time next year. Oh well. I guess Total War is like sports games now. You have 2009: Total War, 2010: Total War, now 2011: Total War....

Back in 2000 Shogun was one of my favorites strategy genre since Total Annihilation, Giants Citizen Kabuto, StarCraft, Seven Kingdom, & Age Of Empires. I played a lot great strategy games back then,,, :) ;)

Anyone else want Rome 2: Total War? Maybe it's just me, but that seemed to have some of the best unit relationshipping in the franchise, not "Give everybody uber infantry and cavalry, and then one odd unit that does some weird untold purpose that nobody knows about because it's bugged".

i hope they dont rush it out. Would rather have them polish the crap out of this. Total war series are one of my favorites and with empire, although an awesome game and worthy total war game, it was filled with bugs at launch. Dont rush this Creative....

I've decided to wait a year before buying any more Total War Games. It takes them at least 6 months to get a patch out most of the time to fix major bugs. Also CA/Sega has been shortening the release build for DLC content I'll buy them all at once for 20% of the price and actually play a complete game with a decent roster size. The game will release with a small boring roster for $60 and a week later there will be a DLC with 10 new units for $10.

If this does turn out to be any good, after the dreadfully non-optimised "NTW" I think I'll be looking at a PC upgrade (all major components). So far it's looking good, but then so did all of the previews and hype for "ETW". If this works, it might bring back memories from when I played the very first "S:TW" on it's release day....memories, like the corners of my...

I'm skeptical... Empire:TW was barely worth playing even 6 months from release *crash* *crash* *lame fort battles* *crash* *crash* Will CA learn from that? There were plenty of angry strategy fans this year.

man i'm honestly stunned by these comments. creative assembly doesn't release anything but garbage anymore, and this game has not been in development any where near long enough to be finished. it's going to be another piece of crap that needs twice as many patches as it will ever get. i can't believe this is already going to be released in march. i never thought i'd say it, but i'll be skipping this total war game, because i have learned that you can not trust reviews from anywhere.

This has to be the only promising RTS scheduled for a 2011 release, and maybe Rock of Ages... unless I'm forgetting anyone else (couldn't care less about the next SC2 episode if it comes out, nothing refreshing about that). Are there any indie RTS's coming out next year worth a look?
