Shippin' Out August 1-7: 4GB Xbox 360

Light week at retail sees arrival of Microsoft's slim-line $200 Arcade model, Monster Rancher DS, Disney's Sing It: Family Hits.

The good news is that next week marks the arrival of EA Sports' Madden NFL, better known as the traditional kickoff for the holiday season and the influx of games that comes with it. The bad news is that the week before Madden's arrival is pretty much as bare as a release schedule comes from the US gaming industry.

The 4GB Xbox 360 will be Kinect-compatible.

In fact, the biggest release of the week isn't even software. Instead, Microsoft takes top billing with the launch of its latest hardware revision for the Xbox 360 Arcade unit. Available at the $199 price point, the system resembles the slim-line 250GB hard drive model, though with a black matte finish. However, instead of external memory, it includes 4GB of internal flash memory, as well as a wireless controller, built-in wireless connectivity, and five USB ports.

As for software, UFO Interactive will be releasing Tecmo Koei's latest installment in the Monster Rancher series for the DS. The monster breeding and battling game features a number of classic critters from previous installments in the franchise, including Mocchi and Suezo.

Karaoke fans also have something to look forward to by way of Disney's Sing It: Family Hits. Available for the PlayStation 3 and Wii, Family Hits offers classic Disney tunes from films such as Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, The Lion King, and Aladdin.

For further details on the week's games, visit GameSpot's New Releases page. The full list of downloadable games on the PlayStation Store, Xbox Live Marketplace, and Wii Shop Channel will be revealed later in the week. Release dates are based on retailer listings and are subject to change.

With the new Xbox 360's you can store memory on other USB storage devices like flash drives so there isn't really any point to go out and buy the 250 GB model for $299.99 over the 4GB Arcade Model for $199.99 unless you just like spending money.

So Kinect costs as much as the full console now? 4GB is nothing, but I guess they just want to compete with PS3 + Move with X360 + Kinect, both selling for $400.

all 360 needs now are some more kiddy games. a dora kinect game or a bakugan kinect game and 360 would be number one by a mile in the usa at least. this is prolly why ms choose to get those current kinect tittles out first. they want the ds and wii kids to want the 360. halo works for the 9-13 year olds but they need real kiddy games to get the 4-8 year olds

@JaxxRaxor, this is a dead week? the new 360 s arcade model is gonna release. it will be far from a dead week. 360 will prolly beat the ds next month on the sales chart with the help of this system. what r parents gonna get their kids a dsi xl for almost 200 or a 360 s for 199?

This is a dead week. The rest of August looks decent however, much better than June and July.

@ yearof3000 If this was about the amount of memory you can get a 4gb SD card for $8.99 for Wii and you can download and play games and game data from it. Its not about the amount of memory its about all the X360 features youll miss out on if you buy the 4gb X360.

WHERE is the PRICE DROP??? When PS3 launched its slim there was a price drop... why none for Xbox?? guess they know ______ when they see them. (MS don't forget to tell them that the HDD is propritary and can not be change like they used to be...oh you forgot?? Hmm)__ PS3 has MANY more aminities yet the price is the same. Well, I guess if you can sell Evian (backward) warter for the price of Wine and people line up to buy it. =| Just rake in the money XD bend them over and rake it in. XD +^) =)

WHY!!! I wanted this to be a false rumor. This is just a scam to take advantage of people that dont know what data storage is.

@shadowysea07 Yes, I know the old hard drives are incompatable, that's obvious to anyone who has even looked at the new console. That's the only issue I see with these new consoles, but it's not exclusive to this version, it's a problem with the 250GB version as well. However, if you had done YOUR research, you would have looked at the unboxing of the 250GB version from E3, and seen that you definitely can take out a hard drive and replace it with a new one, as long as it is of the new HDD design. Your claims that people would have to use 5 flash drives are completely unwarranted.

jad206
jad206

@monson21502 I personally think that installing games will make them last longer, since the drive doesn't have to spin as much the game won't have any possible way to get messed up.

@enoslives7 save your games to it? You know that save file are only around MB? Most are even KB. And it would take 1,048,576KB to make one GB, or 1000 MB to make a GB. So I think a 4 GB hdd is fine for people who only want arcade games/save games.

JohnF111
JohnF111

Its a budget console quit moaning about it only having 4Gb, as you may have noticed kinect is ready out and this console is probably aimed at the kinect market to lessen the price of the two combined.

nice, i think i might get this just to play the Castlevania game on XBLA

OMG, a 4 gig HD !?!? What am I going to do with all that storage ?!?!

monson21502
monson21502

only reason i wanted a bigger hd before was because i wanted to install my games into the hd so my 20 gig 360 wasnt so loud. with the slim i wouldnt have to do that because its quite. so a 4 gb 199 slim will work for me:)

monson21502

if i had the money i would be buying the new 360 slim and moster rancher ds this week. but since im broke ill just rent monster rancher ds and wait to buy another 360 when my current one dies

Screw the N-wireless(G makes so much more sense), and put in a bigger hard drive! Most consumers haven't even reached the full potential of G yet.

this is replacing the arcade people. You know, the machine that had 256 mb or less of internal memory. 4g is quite a jump from that.

zgreenwell

4GB is fine for anyone just doing games saves. You'll need more if you eventually start downloading game add-ons.

xcollector

Unless you don't have a 360 there is no point in getting the slim. When Kinect fails to extend the lifespan of the 360 they'll release the next XBOX. And Sony will have no choice but to release the PS4 to compete.

Microsoft is always pushing the boundaries on hardware! ..this 4gig variant of the indestructible and flawless Xbox360 system is no exception. *BSODS* / *RRODS* / *GDODS* (sarcastic post is sarcastic.. -side note- ..I recently purchased and installed a 600 gig hard drive for my PC for $40)

@bluefire1360 You can't even install a single game with a 4gb HDD. 20gb would be perfect. I'm certain that a 20gb is very inexpensive. I know that it is not proportional, but a terabyte is now less than 100$. I don't know what the regular model has more than the Arcade aside the HDD, but the difference between 20gb and 250gb wouldn't be 100$. Far from it. Even less for 4gb vs 250gb.

since when has Microsoft sold memory cheaply for the xbox.

IT'S OVER 9000! 9000 Kilobytes, that is. Seriosly, what can you do with 4GB?

4gb for me is not nearly enough. It should be priced at 150$

I still say no to the 4gb, memory will eat up very very quickly even for casual gamers. I would understand at least 20-40gb but 4 is waaaaaay to small

tsep23

I think it would make more sense if it were priced at $150. Cause you can get 500 gb hard drive on ebay for $50.

You people need to understand this version of the console is for the casual gamer, someone who owns only a couple games.

xSlugox

it is kind of ridiculous when you break it down... $100 gets you 246GB's, hmm... they could have at least made it with a 20GB. oh well im rockin a brand new 360 walmart swap style hahaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

The problem with the Wi-Fi is that it still doesn't support WPA2, so I am forced to keep that wire across my living room. At least it's better than the Wii : The length limit for the password is 32 characters on the Wii, while my password is 64 characters, the limit of most routers, and the Wii doesn't even have an ethernet port. And if someone tells me that I do not need such as password, let me just say that I have cracked dozens of routers with random passwords. 64 characters doesn't make it any harder, just insanely longer.

deadkingdg
deadkingdg

I barely play my X360, but there's no way I could use it with anything less than 20gb. I have to install every games or else the disc noise is just too insane. I often play while my girlfriend is sleeping and I can't even hear the game when the volume is down if the game is not installed on the hard-drive.

Dramamine0001
Dramamine0001

4GB of flash memory is more than enough for the Arcade SKU, as it's aimed at casual gamers/kids which they expect will not be downloading much or installing games to the hard drive. To stay cheap you can still get this and use USB drives for another 32 GB. That's 36GB which would be enough for several game installs, several demos/DLC/arcade titles. If you want more you can buy a HD add-on once they available or spend another $100 upfront for 250GB. Allowing laptop hard drives to be put in like PS3 would definitely be awesome, but this isn't as bad as people are making it to be. Although, I still think if they didn't nickel and dime people for storage, we'd spend a lot more on XBL content, which I'm sure they make a lot more off of.

4GB...wow that is about as much RAM I have in my desktop...this thing should be priced at like 100$$... O wait built in wifi :D too bad it took them so long to figure that out

VladJasonDrac

I am anything but a "casual" gamer and have about 16gbs of used space on my 60gb 360. I could buy one of these and use an external flash drive I have laying around the house and never worry about storage space. If you live on your console be quiet and buy the 250gb model and let the people who don't live on their consoles save $100, still get wifi and have access to "hardcore" games. I've got a good 230gbs of useless space on my PS3 and would have the same amount of useless space on a 250gb 360. If my 360 ever dies I may just grab a S arcade.

tbolt76

Yeah, but built-in wi-fi (N) makes up for that.
