Shaq Fu returns -- "This time we won't FU it up!" devs say

PC fighting game A Legend Reborn based on famous NBA player Shaquille O'Neal asking for $450,000 on Indiegogo; could come to Xbox One and PS4 if funding reaches $1.6 million.

by

The rumors were right. Shaq Fu is coming back. Organizers today launched a $450,000 Indiegogo campaign for Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn, a sequel to the 1994 2D fighting game. The game is coming to PC for $30, though other platforms are being considered as well.

"This time we won't FU it up!," developer Big Deez Productions said on the Indiegogo website.

Big Deez Productions is a new studio staffed by developers who worked on franchises like Halo, Max Payne, Battlefield, Killzone, and Street Fighter, among others.

"We are in partnership with the man, Shaquille O'Neal, an avid gamer himself. We got tired of bowing to the monolithic men with the money and wanted to work with people who care about the quality of the product," the developers said. "We are people with passion that intend to make solid, addictive, kick ass games, without a whiff of BS."

O'Neal himself is quoted in the game's campaign video as saying, "Alright, I admit it. The first Shaq Fu was [thumbs-down motion] terrible [stabs self with fake sword]. Wait until you see the graphics on this one. I'm back."

Why launch a crowdfunding campaign when O'Neal obviously has the means to fund the game himself? "The purpose of bringing the game to the public is to see how much interest there is in becoming Shaq's partner and in seeing the game happen," developers said.

O'Neal is investing "a lot" of his own time and money into the project, as are developers at Big Deez Productions, they said. Unlike Kickstarter, Indiegogo is not all-or-nothing, so the developers get to keep all funds raised through the campaign. 5 percent of all profits for Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn will go to the Boys and Girls Club of America.

As for the game itself, Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn is described as "Streets of Rage meets Street Fighter meets Devil May Cry." You'll play as O'Neal and learn "hundreds" of moves and battle techniques which you'll use against "thousands" of enemies. The game also will include "cool finishing moves," a co-op mode, and a head-to-head mode.

Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn also includes destructible environments, power-ups, and a progression system. There's also a campaign story "worthy of an Oscar" where you'll battle against the "villain for the ages" Black Star Ninja. Be sure to check out the Indiegogo campaign for a full list of Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn features.

If you back the game at $15, you'll get a digital copy of the game, which will rise in price to $30 at launch. Supporting the project at $25 gets you a copy of the game and every piece of DLC released for the game throughout its entire lifetime. Moving up the ladder, paying $400 gets you access to the game's launch party in either Los Angeles or New York City, while giving $15,000 means you'll be able to play basketball with Shaq at his home. Pay $25,000 and you'll get to have a two-hour dinner with Shaq.

Finally, Big Deez Productions laid out a roadmap of stretch goals that includes support for platforms like Xbox 360, PlayStation, Wii U, 3DS, PlayStation Vita, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. You can see the full list of stretch goals below.

  • $500,000 - We add a challenge mode!
  • $550,000 - Two additional levels and an additional playable character!
  • $650,000 - iOS and Android feel the thrill of Shaq Fu!
  • $775,000 - Shaq Fu gets the Xbox and PS3 treatment!
  • $960,000 - Shaq in your pocket with PS Vita and 3DS versions!
  • $1,080,000 - Nintendo lovers get the action on Wii U!
  • $1,620,000 - Shaq goes turbo on Xbox One and PS4 platforms!

Let's just say they release it and it's good - everyone would be floored.
What if it's bad - everyone expects it to be bad. Even if its good it will still be AWESOMELY BAD (like the movie Tremors, lol).

As gamers - we win no matter what. We either get an awesome game, or another 20-year Joke.

OMG I've been waiting my entire life for this! Here take my $, since you don't believe in the project enough on your own to fund it with your billions.

Uh, FU means fucked you or up, so the headline makes no sense whatsoever. Oh well, at least most of us know what you mean. Nitpicking at it's best I guess.

Yeah GTFO on that one. A terrible idea. Don't get people who make a product after their own name and expect it to sell. 'We won't fu it up'... Yeah go fu yourself.

Oh gawd, Shaq what the FU are you doing?

-DLC For Life $25-

"Digital copy of base game on PC, plus all future downloadable content for free for life including all characters, weapons and customization options. This is over $200 of value."

$200? Not only are they insane for doing this but clearly they think we are stupid. I mean holy hell, the next option for $35 includes everything in the DLC For Life package but with an additional EXCLUSIVE character and weapon.

Where's the $1.5 million option? Where you get all the benefits of the previous packages but get to unlock Kobe (This is over $30 billion of value).

The original Shaq Fu scarred me for life... Seeing this will ruin my sleep for the next couple of weeks.

Will it have a Challenge Tower like the last Mortal Kombat and will one of the challenges be making a successful free throw?

I'm hoping that this game is at least decent.

Honestly I really hope they do it right this time and make a good, fun game. Shaq is a pretty nice guy and the enthusiasm he puts here is charming.

Clearly Shaq heard the fans crying out for another Shaq-Fu game...

I'd rather a Shaq Simulator 2014, but this is adequate.

I'm surprisingly interested. Cool to hear Shaq admit that the first game sucked. Glad to hear his enthusiasm for the new game. $25 for the game and all DLC is a sweet price, as long as it's good. I think the intent is right for this project.

It's a bit early for April Fools.

And HELL NO!  No, no, NO!  I will not support this.  I hated this game since I was a kid, and I smashed and set this game on fire in a YouTube vid.  FUCK SHAQ FU!

Tiger_Ali

Lol who the hell are they trying to convince, anyone who's played the game knows what they're getting into. Lol you wanna know why the game is hated so bad when you compare it to the other fighters out around its time...you couldn't, it was that bad.

Executing moves was so excruciatingly frustrating and the bonus Shaq rap cd, ugh I can still stomach to remember the lyrics..."Shaq Diesel, cuz you take notes as I stand and deliver. Shaq Diesel, cuz you take notes as I stand and deliver.". That was the hook, then I vaguely remember the lyrics but a line went like this..."when I'm on the sideline looking at coach, I will approach, any mc may want to battle, feeling high and mighty knock you off ya saddle, shake shake your mic and rattle, (can't remember the next line, but I remember the next) I don't smoke but I sip on Pepsi, Juice, my momma black like Zeus and you remember me now as I hit the snooze...its me(shaq diesel).

Wow Shaq Fu. I wonder if this will really happen. Its like the legacy of Shaq Fu has somehow clung to life hiding in the sewers after all these years. Either way this is interesting to see it going full circle. I guess, maybe. Ok this has to be a joke.

How do you get an April Fool's joke to work flawlessly? Do it any day besides April 1st. I'm on to you Shaq. I'm on to you...

I mean a DMC is fun, but I wanted a FIghter Redemption.  Not an entirely different medium.  But if it gets to the console status I'll donate.

Sure, the first game may have been terrible - but it still made money anyway.

This sequel is riding on the profile of the previous game - how ever bad that profile is - to jostle for a place in the gaming scene

After all, a game only fades out of existence if it failed to come out of obscurity - and this game certainly did not "fail" in this regard.

Quite the "injustice", isn't it? ;)

With that said, heh, the pitch is being made on IndieGoGo - that other crowdfunding site that is kinder on fund-raising failures.

If we're talking Genesis games that need Kickstarter remakes, then games like Streets of Rage, Vectorman and Forgotten Worlds needs to happen.

I'll buy this if they bring back all the old characters.

I think the funniest part is that they show Shaq in a mocap suit.  If his big ass tried to kick like that he would pull a hammy. lol

@tightwad34  bro you reading into it way too much. It's Fu because of the name of it's title Shaq FU, it's just using the "Fu" part to imply it's using the word "fuck".
