Saints Row Expansion Gat Out of Hell Confirmed at PAX [UPDATE]

A new standalone expansion for Saints Row is coming this January.

[UPDATE]: Today at Volition's PAX panel, the developer revealed a trailer for a standalone Saints Row expansion subtitled Gat Out of Hell for PC, 360, PS3, Xbox One, and PS4.

You'll apparently travel to a hellish landscape and don demonic wings. The game will include co-op play where one person can take control of Gat and the other Kinzie. And the game will come in at a budget-friendly $19.95 on January 27, 2015.

Volition also announced a port of Saints Row IV for current-gen systems (Xbox One and PS4). The games also launches on January 27, 2015 and will cost $29.99 stand-alone, or you can get it in a bundle with Gat Out of Hell for $49.99.

For PC players, an SDK release due out today will introduce customization options to the game, including the ability to create your own weapons.

We'll have the full trailer and more details soon!

The original story appears below.

Following the recent posting of a PAX schedule which revealed Saints Row developer Volition will announce its next project today, publisher Deep Silver has published a tease that all but confirms a Saints Row announcement is imminent.

The image above--featuring the logo of the Saints Row series' Third Street Saints--was posted to the Deep Silver UK Twitter account this morning, accompanied by the text, "Something wicked this way comes…" It's also proceeded to retweet tweets that suggest this is tease is pointing to Saints Row 5.

A follow-up to Saints Row IV was inevitable; the only real question now is how it moves on from the style of the previous game, which offered players Crackdown-esque superpowers. Earlier games in the series played more like Grand Theft Auto, though they have increasingly distinguished themselves from GTA.

The PAX panel is scheduled to take place today from 10-11 AM Pacific (1-2 PM Eastern). It's explained as being a quiz show with Natalie Lander, who voices Kinzie in the games. "At the end of the panel, we'll show you exclusive gameplay, art, and details for an upcoming project from Volition," the panel's description teases.

Stay tuned to GameSpot to find out all the details about what the announcement turns out to be, and check out our PAX hub for all of our coverage straight from Seattle.

Even though I am a huge fan of the series, I think I'm gonna pass on this one.

Well, it's Saints Row, so I'll get it.  I just hope when SR5 eventually comes out, it's more like the first two, and not all this wacky crap anymore.

@DrKill09 keep dreaming, i'm pretty sure they will nick a mass effect parody before going back to gang wars.

Saints Row is one of the most pathetic game series ever released.

Oh boy how in the world does this series go from Saints Row 2, to this? I wish this crap would just go away and never comeback, I want the competition to GTA that we were getting with Saints 2. How they ever went this direction I'll never know, but I don't see it paying off in the least.

_Silent_Jay_
_Silent_Jay_

@wilson2k9 The Saints Row series was never intented to be GTA competition.  It's been a tongue in cheek parody since the beginning, but a lot of people didn't catch onto it until they made it more obvious.

OldDirtyCR
OldDirtyCR

@wilson2k9 Because they realized that there was no way they could match the sheer budget Rockstar can throw at a GTA game. They did the smart thing and instead of trying to make a GTA clone/direct competitor they kept going down the "wacky" path and made a more unique game that wasn't direct competition to GTA.

I am thoroughly glad they did this. GTA V does the whole serious/realistic(ish) with some comedy quite well. Saints Row does the crazy/zanny/ridiculous/etc quite well. Both series can coexist.

DrKill09

@wilson2k9 Fully agree.  I had fun with SR3 and IV, but they just don't have the staying power, or replayability of the first two.

I REALLY miss Saints Row1.  Sold my 360 back in 08.  It's the only 360 game I wish I could play again.  When I first played the demo, I was hooked.  It was endlessly better than GTA SA.  It stayed in the hood, and was a nice blend of tense moments and humor.  SR2 improved on this, and then the series took a massive leap back with SR3.  SRIV took it even further, and turned a once great series (that was endlessly better than any GTA up until GTAV) into a strange Infamous/Prototype style superhero game.

I hope SR5 will start off showing SR3, 4, and now this expansion pack were all an LSD trip, and the series goes back to it's roots;  Not overly serious, but not over the top wacky, either.

Oh a next-gen port for SRIV. Good, thanks to digital foundry I passed on SRIV on the PS3 because it was a bullcra.p port with various tech issues(how the hell does a game like SRIV run at a res of 960x720 on PS3 but a game like GTA V boasting 10 times better visual fiedlty and a very large world size runs at native 720p with an acceptable framerate?)

DrKill09
DrKill09

@Navardo95 I really don't see the point in a next gen port.  It'll just be the pc version on med/high settings... and STILL probably not 1080p.

SRV needs to be a full on reboot considering the ending of IV.

DrKill09
DrKill09

@PHOENIXZERO Agreed.  Like I said before: all the events after SR2 could be explained away with a drug overdose, and the series could continue on in the more gangsta style of the first two.  That way, you could still have characters like The Boss and Johnny Gat.  If they were to reboot it completely, we'd either end up with a rehash of the first game, or have a completely new cast of characters.  I just want a true sequel to SR2.

Oh right DLC that doesn't come as part of the Season Pass that I bought which gave me one actual story to play through and a barely playable second story.

Yeah that season pass was great value, who doesn't want more silly weapons to pile on top the crazy amount of silly weapons I already have?

I was led to believe that we would get expansions to the story but we got one.

I won't be buying another season pass of you. I will still get this though. lol. ;)

OldDirtyCR
OldDirtyCR

@punksterdaddy The season pass that was 10$ and is now 5$? It explicitly stated what was included when you bought it. So you really have no right to be mad that a 20$ expansion is not included in your 5-10$ pass

DrKill09
DrKill09

@punksterdaddy I admit, the DLC for SRIV was pretty lame.  The "story" add ons were laughably short.

The fact that this is $20 actually makes me hopeful that it'll be more than one lousy hour long.

That said, hopefully Steam do a 10% discount on preorders.

punksterdaddy
punksterdaddy

@OldDirtyCR

It was not explicitly stated what we were getting at all. If I knew that then I wouldn't have bothered getting it.

The only things that were confirmed when I bought it for my £10 was Enter the Dominatrix with plenty more content to follow. I got The Saints Save Christmas and that was it! WOW!

Who are you to tell me I have no right to be mad? I'm not mad anyway, I'm disappointed but that's not for you to tell me I have no right to be how I chose.

I even went on to say I was still getting this new one, so what is your problem?

I got three expansions with SRIII, and the rest of that was cancelled to be put into SRIV. I expected more from them this time... That's why I am disappointed!

punksterdaddy
punksterdaddy

@DrKill09

I hope so too. Doesn't matter how much the Season Pass cost, the point I was making above was that we barely got anything worthy of justifying a season pass at all.

Buying the bundle is 5p more expensive than buying them separately.

I was expecting a brand new game and it's just DLC, oh and a remastered Saints Row IV. Disappointing.

Ice-Cube
Ice-Cube

Meh, I was hoping for Saints Row V of it going back to the roots. The last good one was the Third. The forth one killed the whole customizing vehicles, no point if you can just fly. I enjoyed SR: II and III the most.

Ah well, hopefully SR: V will come out late 2015 or in 2016 since they are pushing this for January.

Ayzed
Ayzed

@Ice-Cube  after all the alien sh*t and the world being destroyed in 4, somehow I doubt they plan on going back to the roots, sadly.
2 was the best game in the series, 4 was only better than 3 because the gameplay with the superpowers was more fun, but over all they are both stupid as f*ck games.

OldDirtyCR
OldDirtyCR

@Ice-Cube They've basically boxed themselves into a corner. IV and this expansion make heavy use of flying/dashing/superspeed/crazy vehicles/etc. There's no way they can just go back to plain old vanilla "real world" style that SR I/II had. There are plenty of people who enjoyed the superpower aspect of IV and it would be jarring to suddenly be a normal human again in V.

If they go forward with a SR V then you should expect more flying/superpowers/etc. I could see them doing a supervillian/superhero themed game where a bunch of people get superpowers suddenly. If they rebooted the series then it's quite possible for them to go back to their "roots" of more traditional GTA style gameplay.

spacecadet25
spacecadet25

Although the game might be neat, many of us really miss the off-the-wall but real world Saints Row series.  Saints Row peaked with III, and I feel this game and IV should just be another IP.

Please let us know when were going to get the next true Saints Row.

ItsTheSasquatch
ItsTheSasquatch

That's nice--I'll probably get it on Steam without even waiting for a sale--but I still want them to confirm there'll be a Saints Row V ASAP. With IV's ending, there are a dozen different directions they could go--quite a few other franchises/genres to screw with.

majere613
majere613

Torn on this. It'll be nice to see the old crew again, but I hope we can import our own Boss, even if we don't get to play him/ her. For that matter, I assume Hell has fairly loose rules on same-sex marriages.

Holy Sh!t looks like I'll being buying Saint's Row IV again. Man this is awesome glad I never bought any of the DLC or the Game of the Century edition lol. Funny part is I was just playing this game over again but now I'm gonna stop cause I don't want the story to be too fresh in my mind when I play it again on my PS4. Saint's Row is probably the only last gen game I bought that I'd be willing to buy over again on next-gen it was just so much fun can't wait to play as Gat either gonna be epic.
