Ryan Reynolds Deserved Oscar Nomination For Deadpool, Jake Gyllenhaal Says

Ryan Reynolds should have received a Best Actor nomination for his portrayal of Wade Wilson/Deadpool in the movie Deadpool, according to Jake Gyllenhaal.

As reported by Entertainment Weekly, Gyllenhaal said this week that Reynolds was "brilliant" in the R-rated superhero movie and should have been recognized.

"We talk about brilliant performances all the time, you know, the actors who tear themselves apart for their roles, which I'm a believer in. But then I look at Ryan Reynolds in Deadpool and I say, 'No one can do that but him,'" Gyllenhaal said. "That is truly, purely him. As an artist he struggled for several years to figure that out and it's all there on the screen. And it's brilliant."

Gyllenhaal added: "Sure it's a comic book movie and it's made a lot of money--but that doesn't subtract from Ryan's extraordinary work. Because it's him. I mean, let's ask ourselves: What else do we want from people who create? Something that is truly them."

Deadpool received no Oscar nominations, despite picking up two nods at the Golden Globes. Reynolds responded to the Oscar shutout as Deadpool would--by talking about a tickle-fight.

Reynolds and Gyllenhall star together in the upcoming space movie Life.

Deadpool 2 is set to be directed by John Wick's David Leitch, who replaces the first film's director, Tim Miller. The movie doesn't have a confirmed release date, but Fox currently has two slots allocated for upcoming X-Men movies, in 2018 and 2019. One is thought to be Deadpool 2, the other possibly New Mutants.
