Grand Theft Auto V celebrated its 10th anniversary on Sunday, September 17, and Rockstar Games marked the milestone with a thank-you message to fans for their support over the past decade. Rockstar did not, however, say or tease anything about the next GTA game. There was no good reason to believe this would happen, but fans nonetheless thought it might.

As for the anniversary statement, Rockstar said, "We would like to thank you, our players, for your incredible support over the years. This amazing community is the reason GTAV has thrived across multiple console generations and given us the opportunity to grow and update GTA Online with new features and content over these past 10 years, and your support is truly humbling."

Rockstar added: "A massive thank you to anyone who has ever played, streamed, roleplayed, created, or shared from the world of Los Santos and Blaine County--here's to many more adventures together!"

GTA V is one of the best-selling games of all time, with more than 185 million units shipped across all versions. The game originally debuted on PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2013, before coming to PS4 and Xbox One in 2014, and PC in 2015. The game was re-released again for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S with improvements in 2022. The game was never released on Nintendo Switch.

Contributing to the game's enduring popularity is its GTA Online multiplayer mode, which has a lively and thriving playerbase. It rakes in money for Rockstar and Take-Two, so much so that CEO Strauss Zelnick said GTA Online is a "gift that keeps on giving" in terms of revenue.

Rockstar is celebrating GTA V's 10th anniversary with an array of in-game items and activities in GTA Online this week, and you can read up on the anniversary plans to learn more.

Rockstar is now developing the next GTA game, but it has yet to be officially announced. A massive leak revealed that the game might be set in Vice City--a stand-in for Miami--and feature multiple protagonists just like GTA V did. Looking into Take-Two's financial reports, some have deduced that GTA VI could launch in 2024 or 2025, but nothing is certain yet.

"I think that's the challenge that the folks at Rockstar face every time that there is a new iteration of Grand Theft Auto. It needs to be something you've never seen before," Zelnick said recently. "And it needs to reflect the feeling that we have about Grand Theft Auto--that's a big challenge for the team. Rockstar's answer is seek perfection. Seek nothing short of perfection, and we'll get there."

Rumors about Grand Theft Auto VI have been plentiful. One of the more intriguing rumors is that the game will have a Fortnite-style evolving map in some capacity. According to the scuttlebutt, this would allow Rockstar to frequently change and adjust GTA 6's world map, similar to how live-service games mix things up on a regular basis.
