Ridge Racer Unbounded on March 6

Bugbear Entertainment's destruction-focused take on Namco Bandai racer franchise crashes onto Xbox 360, PS3, and PC early next year.

Namco Bandai has been overhauling its Ridge Racer franchise, and the results are almost ready for a road test. The publisher today announced that Ridge Racer Unbounded has been given a North American launch date of March 6, 2012.

You can almost hear the insurance premiums skyrocketing.

Developed by Bugbear Entertainment, Unbounded takes the circuit-racing franchise onto city streets with a new emphasis on havoc and destruction. Players will be able to choose how they race through cities, both in designing the city layouts and opting to take shortcuts through storefronts when expedient.

Bugbear's previous work includes the FlatOut series of demolition derby racers for Empire Interactive, which featured minigames requiring the player to crash such that the car's driver would be ejected through the front windshield and into targets, such as a set of giant bowling pins. The studio also developed the PSP edition of Sega Rally Revo in 2007.

Unbounded will be the first installment in the Ridge Racer series to appear on the PC, and the first to hit consoles since the 2006 release of Ridge Racer 7, a PS3 launch title. However, the series hasn't been completely dormant in the meantime. It debuted on the iPhone in 2009 with Ridge Racer Accelerated, and Ridge Racer 3DS launched alongside Nintendo's newest handheld in March.

Unbounded? This game looks good, but really? Worst tag title ever.

I had no idea the burnout game I wanted for this generation was going to be called ridge racer.... I'll wait for March.

There is still one Ridge Racer game to be released before this abomination of the franchise is out. Ridge Racer is coming to the Vita and is very much the Ridge Racer we know and love. I will get my hands on that game by the end of the year. I live in Japan so we get the Vita first.

Is this going to be good or bad?

RR is my childhood racing game, so i'll likely buy, even being YOURS Namco Bandai. I'll cry and smile at the same time...

Yeah , I miss Burnout revenge) they should make a new game with an old system or hd remake of revenge, 'cause until February is too long for Twisted Metal )

@inaka_rob Couldn't agree more. Burnout needs to go back to fixed races. I'd rather have more races, vehicles and locations than free roam. Paradise was alright, but for a long fan of the series I was a tad disappointed :(

Speaking of arcade racing games, anyone see a review on the Daytona USA?

I'm not against reboots, it looks cool but it's indeed a clone of tons of racing games. Hope it has some originality, looks fun will keep an eye

Why did they rename Burnout?

This is ****ing disgusting! This is not the Ridge Racer I know. This is some bastard half baked child of Need for Speed and Burnout with 1000% less originality. While the latest RR games were all similar, they're still quite unique. They have their own fleshed out game world, cool cars, hot tunes, and fun drifting. Now this is some soul-less wannabe Western arcade style racing game bull plop. Namco, and Japan in general, we know you guys are in a rut. But giving away development to your precious IPs to companies that don't have the same work ethic and culture is not the way to solve your problems. Want to fix the Japanese game industry? Fix it with genuine Japanese creativity and ingenuity. Stop westernizing your uniquely Japanese games to people who make games that is the complete opposite of the way you think. END THIS PATHETIC PRACTICE NOW! GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER JAPAN!

The development outsourced to Bugbear. It lost all the original Ridge Racer feeling and no Reiko Nagase. Good bye Bamco and thanks for rebooting all your franchises(Ace Combat, Ridge Racer, DBZ, etc) into something else that made us original fans feels abandoned.

This is not what Kaz Hirai really wanted.

This will be a great game if they model it after the older burnout games. Yeah, Paradise was fun, but it wasn't a true BURNOUT game in my eyes. It was just a open world racer with crashing. I want a crashing game with racing, like ALL the older burnouts. Crashing cars is what made burnout so great and then in Paradise it was a second thought. it was actully a annoyance lots of the time. 9 minutes into a 10 minutes race and my bumper nicks the wall and my car explodes into a billion pieces. That isn't fun or intense, it is just a pain in the ###.

This new Ridge Race looks to be like a low budget version of Burnout. The cars don't shatter into a thousand pieces when they crash like they do in Burnout. Lame!

I miss the Devil and Angle cars, what happened to the True Arcade Experience I once enjoyed from my former Favorite racing series. T-T

If burnout wont make burnout then I'm just glad someone will. Also I find it funny that "dominate" was said so much being that there is Burnout Dominator.

For some weird reason, when i see the box art of this game (the logo) i just remember about need for speed logos... but that is imposible cause this RR game is 100% original.

RidgeRacer: NFS Takedown Unbounded!!!!! God, what a blasphemy... Namco is killing one of my prefered franchises... it will have nothing on common with any other RR game other than it have cars too...

RR used to have a very obvious identity...this time it looks like a clone of a lot of other games we've seen. disappointing. just make a new RR game with classic RR racing that we all know and love!! don't fix what ain't broken, ya dig?
