Resolution disparity continues, as Trials Fusion is 1080p on PS4 and 900p on Xbox One

Ubisoft confirms native resolution differences for both versions of latest entry in its motorcycle racing series.

by

The PlayStation 4 version of Ubisoft's upcoming motorcycle racing game Trials Fusion will run in a higher resolution than the Xbox One, it has been revealed.

A Ubisoft representative told VentureBeat that Trials Fusion will run in native 1080p on PS4 and native 900p on Xbox One (upscaled to 1080p). The game is also coming to Xbox 360 and PC, and all versions will run at 60fps.

The graphics disparity between PS4 and Xbox One is nothing new. Major games like Call of Duty: Ghosts, Battlefield 4, and Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag all run in a lower resolution on Xbox One compared to PS4.

This has led so some consternation from fans, but Microsoft says performance should improve over time. Of course, the Xbox One is fully capable of rendering 1080p/60fps, and Turn 10's racing game Forza Motorsport 5 is a great example of that.

Trials Fusion launches April 16 for Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PS4. The PC version launches April 24. For more, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

With no games to play, 1080p is all u got to talk about. Might as well brag about how sleek your console is. Ill just brag about all these high TF review scores. You know how hard it is for GS to give a 9 to a Mp ahooter?

I like how he says forza 5 is a great example of a game that runs 1080p 60 fps lol. That game doesn't have night time or weather effects, has terrible crowds, and doesn't even have 20 tracks lol.

With a lot of great games coming up for both systems "Watch Dogs", "Destiny" "The Division", etc hopefully they will be able to output 1080p for both systems. PS4 users won't have much to worry about.

XBO users don't care about graphics, unless they're pissing on the Wii U for no apparent reason.

GS just wanna see the internet burn!! By posting this useless news about some developer that says blablabla PS4  bla bla bla xboner blablabla and now..... FIGHT!

How does the xbone not have enough power to run this in 1080p? How? Karma that's how.

But its not the Xbox one's hardware fault, its developers.  Yup developers.  Right MS?  Make sure you send that check to the correct address.

The article said it all, "the resolution disparity is nothing new" so why is it making the news again then???? And I only own a ps4 b4 someone calls me a ms fanboy! I just saying the truth!

l don't know why all these console gamers are so worried about resolution, when they couldn't even tell the the difference between 720i, 720p, 1080i and 1080p.

Yet another example of a lazy dev studio unable to properly code for the Xbox1.  A game like this which has very little going on should output 1080 on any system.  Its apparent that they are just using a direct port from pc and not utilizing the eSram at all.  X1 owners should expect this until devs figure it out.

This game is a no sale for me but if I was interested then i would get the ps4 version.

That's what happens when you build a media hub that puts games 2nd.

what did you expected? a full 1080p on XBONE? really?

it's like having thanksgiving on may.

Have had enough of comparing these two over minor stuff. these two are different products with different aims. and the editors have to fill their pages with info, whether useful or total shit like resolution difference.

it's like people of one city with two great football team, some with this one, others with the other one.

i love games, whatever the console, whatever the sales figure.

I never want to be fooled with this type of news (which in case of resolution difference between ps4 and xb1, they are not new!!!)

Trials looks crap on ANY console - so the point is moot.

no biggie, but ps4 version is the way to go if you have to choose

but many games even if lower res on xb1 will be better than ps4 version due to voice and gesture advantage

This is obviously a case of the developer either not fine tuning or just being an inexperienced studio. If Forza 5, which is much more graphically intensive and has a lot more things going on, can pull off 1080p/60fps, then this downloadable game can easily do it. I think it's a bit of both. Red Lynx has only made 2 games and they were both Trials games on previous gen hardware.

Regardless, I'm getting this on my XB1 instead of my PS4. I love Trials games. Though I wish they would put more easy & medium tracks in the game. It seems they focus on hard and extreme more so. Probably 80% of the people that buy this game won't even touch the harder levels and they make up more than half the game.

A whole 180p less than the PS4. Big deal. Still going to get it for my One

@biggezel Well, there is a real difference between interlaced and progressive scan if shown side-by-side. There is a reason that the video standards now come with "p" at the end instead of "i". But I agree with your general sentiment - these differences are really tiny

There's no magic trick for developers to learn to use esram. They've been using edram in the 360 for years. The problem is there's only 32mb of it. Even the Wii u has 32mb of edram. But with the Xbox one outputting much more detailed graphics than a Wii u 32mb is just not enough. Devs may be able to optimise esram usage slightly but it's just a pain to have to do that when on the PlayStation 4 you don't need too.

bdrtfm

@Ensabuhnur And there in lies the problem. Publishers seem more interested in getting the game out as quickly and cheaply as possible than making a game look the best it can. I don't really care about graphics as much as game quality but, when a game looks bad due to shear laziness, that's a different story.

Last gen for the first 5 years or so, they developed games for the 360 first then made shitty ports for the PS3 - not because they couldn't make the game look good on PS3, they just didn't give a shit. They knew it would sell just as many games even if they didn't give it the extra polish it deserved.

Now, this gen, they are doing the exact same thing except the consoles are reversed. There is no reason this game can't do 1080p on Xbox One. Yet, people will buy it anyway. If every Xbox owner said FU and didn't buy games from devs that do this shit, I'd bet the games would suddenly start looking much better.

@raziel2kain  Microsoft are fooling themselves by trying to market the XB1 as an all-in-one entertainment machine... XBox has always been a gaming oriented device, the entertainment stuff is just gravy.

But realizing their PoS underpowered box cannot provide the full gaming experience as far as "next-gen" is concerned, they tried to push the entertainment device angle further.

If you've spent $100 more for your device than the main competitor, you expect to at least receive the same level of quality when it comes to games.

Whether you like these news articles or not, people have a right to know.

@homelessgamer Are you for real? Comparing a f***ng console to one of the worst atrocities in history? I've seen some dumb shit on these forums but, you sir win the dickhead crown!

Kupin

@Vodoo Technically, the game can run 1080p if the developers wanted too, but I'm pretty sure the graphics quality will be reduced and appear lower quality than the other platform version. They wanted the graphics quality, like textures or processing effects to be matched across all platform.

While Forza 5 could run 1080p/60fps, the game had some graphics downgraded in order to maintain the framerates and also for the sake of resolution, like 2D crowds, aliasing, static lighting effects, missing reflection when on hood camera and other stuff. It becomes worst when playing split screen; the graphics quality tremendously reduced. I understand about the limitations of the hardware, but for the next gen console like this, I expect it can handle the graphics a bit better.

In other words, if Xbox One wanted to run certain games in 1080p, there have to be some sacrifice to be made on the graphics and performance. One of the best examples is Tomb Raider Definitive Edition; it runs in 1080p, but capped to 30fps, while PS4 version runs in 1080p/60fps.

@Biotasticmeat It's more than just 180 rows of pixels. Each row itself is wider. It's a difference of 44% more pixels being rendered per frame. That's massive.

hystavito
hystavito

@Biotasticmeat  I don't really care :), but just wanted to mention that 900p is supposed to be 1600x900, so 1440000 pixels.  1080p is of course 1920x1080, 2073600 pixels.  I can't be sure that when they say 900p they mean 1600x900, but that's the usual meaning.

@sakaixx @raziel2kain

I know you are right, the winning is important.

but at the end of the day, all of us gamers play games for fun. Don't you think that these companies, together with these websites are fooling the gamers, more than being informative?

i remember 5-6 years ago, many were against ps3, and right know the trend is much more positive for ps4. who knows the future?

i know you prefer ps4 to xb1 (me have the same feeling) but games do matter, not the consoles, not this ridiculous news (!!!) about minor stuff.

xantufrog
xantufrog

@Kupin @Vodooexactly, I don't get how people focus exclusively on the resolution number. EVERY console sacrifices SOMETHING to hit whatever resolution it displays at. 900p with ___ amount of eye candy, or 1080p with <___ amount of eye candy: either is perfectly possible on XBOne. Same with PS4. The devs need to choose, and to be honest in most cases it is probably better to go with 900p and better textures, reflections, etc than to just say "must have 1080 at all costs, screw details and/or framerate".

Hell, you could run stuff in 1080i on PS2 - the resolution is just one part of the graphical equation.

ricoros1

Sure, sounds like a massive deal. like trials in Minecraft sort of massive?

@raziel2kain  People were against the PS3 because it offered crap value for money.  They like PS4 now because it's excellent value for money.

People are against XboxOne now because its crap value for money in contrast to PS4.

1080p 60fps should be the standard all first party titles on the consoles should be going for.

hystavito

@xantufrog @hystavitoSomething just hit me, I wonder why Sony's marketing people haven't started representing these resolution differences with statements like "144% more resolution!" :).
