Report: New Prince of Persia using Rayman Legends engine in development

Ubisoft rumored to be working on a new 2D Prince of Persia.

Ubisoft is said to be working on a new 2D prince of Persia game using Rayman Legends’ UbiArt Framework engine.

French website Le Portail du Jeu Video claims it was told that, like Rayman, the Prince’s legs, arms, and other body parts will animate independently of each other, making him look like a 3D model. As with other Prince of Persia games, the Prince will run, swordfight, and perform various acrobatics to avoid traps. Ubisoft’s upcoming Child of Light, which mixes RPG and 2D platforming, is another game that uses the UbiArt Framework.

According to the site, the game in question is being developed in Ubisoft Montpellier, which is also responsible for Rayman Legends and Rayman Origins.

Back in January 2013, Ubisoft Montreal CEO Yannis Mallat said that the Prince of Persia franchise had been “paused,” but that it would return in the future.

Ubisoft released a few forgettable mobile Prince of Persia games in the last couple of years, but the last serious entry in the franchise was 2010’s Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands.

A 2D PoP game would be awesome. UbiArt Framework is a great engine.

prince of persia SOT is still much better than all of assassin-creeds games combined.

Prince of Persia could be much better than Assassin's Creed sequel if Ubisoft invested on it i had more fun playing PoP than AC!! now they turned it to 2d game! at least good to see it's still alive!

When I see UbiArt, I know its pure quality...amazing quality. I'd love to see a remake of Prince of Persia 2, making that horse come to life must be one of the highlights of my childhood gaming.

Warrior Within was awesome, it just didn't feel like a Prince of Persia game to me. Sands of Time's essence was lost in transaction. I hope they can find it again.

Stop this Assassin's creed for a year and make a good prince game !

I think it would be a great idea and yes it could be fun in 2D.

I'm skeptical about a 2D Prince of Persia being fun.

While this is just a rumor, I do hope there is some truth to it.

It's been a long time since a good PoP game came out.

If Rayman Legends and Child of Light is any indication, this game will be awesome =)

Another 2d one?!  Cool!

It's good to see a 2d comeback.  For years, everything was 3d, and a lot of series were awful in 3d, like Contra.

Why the fuss over 2D? The series began in 2D and there are a lot of games today that work really well in 2D. Rayman origins and legends, Super meat boy, limbo.

As a fan of the original this is wonderful news. So many days spent on trying to complete the game as quickly as possible.

Or you could work on something that actually tries to live up to the glory of the Sands trilogy...

I really hope that it is a sequel to Prince of Persia (2008). I actually just finished the game on PC a day or two ago, and watched the DLC on YouTube. By god this game needs a proper sequel, absolutely loved every moment of it. It was easy as f*ck, yet most games are anymore, so it didn't bother me too much.

Forget the 2D versions of PoP and bring us a new 3D PoP using the awesome Frostbite Engine. Yeeeeaaaahhhh!!!!!

The middleware that underpins the striking visual art in Rayman Origins will soon be free for all developers, a leading studio boss has said.

“UbiArt has been built to be shared,” Ancel told Develop. “It won’t be like other games technologies, which are often just locked away,”

3 years later...

I have played very little 2D Prince of Persia. Most of my experiences with that franchise were with the 3D games which were all decent which separates them from God of War which is extremely brutal and gory. I hope to see The Prince again in 3D, yet a 2D PoP could be challenging. I will give it a chance.

I didn't hate the 2008 release (actually found it refreshing in its art design) but I gotta say it didn't really marry the classic feel of the saga (trial and error, punishment). Now Im sad I¡ll never know the end tho :(

I need the Ubiart engine.....where can i get it...???

I love all of the 3D Prince of Persia games (yes, even the 2008 entry), so I'm still somewhat on the fence about 2D. Then again, the Prince of Persia series' origins trace back to 2D, and I can appreciate when things make a return to their roots. With that said and considering today's technology, I can't help but wonder what Ubisoft has in store for this upcoming PoP entry.

I will reserve judgment until I see some footage, and I wait with bated breath.

@Nightelf123 That's because AC was meant to be a PoP game. However the game took a different turn and ended up becoming AC.

@kingcrimson24 WW? You mean the game that had lots of cool moves but only a handful were actually useful? The game that was actually made for teenagers (they focused group it with them in mind). The game that sucked all the magic of the first one? Yeah no thanks. Wish you had said a game like SoT with improved combat instead.

sonicblast19

@VenkmanPHD  Have you played Rayman Legends? It will clearly be something like that since Rayman legends has some Prince of Persia elements.

LightRukia

@Karlinel Yes it did but the punishment wasn't severe enough. They needed less checkpoints so that when got saved you were brought back much father from where you failed.

@Securator  I still can't believe it's been 3 years since Ancel claimed it would be open source, the silence on it is now such a let down he should've never brought it up...

I actually loved what they did to the 2008 Prince of Persia....it felt fresh somehow.....

@MikEyNyHc Implying that T2T was good PoP game? When it had a weak story, lame combat, the dark prince while fun to play in combat was annoying with the time limit if you didn't collect sands, change in Farah's design (seriously all that sun and she's Indian yet she somehow got lighter skin in 7 years). Aside from the platforming which had it's problems too it wasn't really that great. I liked 2008 but SoT was truly the last great POP game.

@rarson @syler4815162342 Before start commenting read little more! I said they forgot about the 3D PoP and doesn't invest on it as they invest on AC, which PoP has better potential than AC!

@syler4815162342

What's your point? The first game was 2D, so they didn't "turn it into a 2D game," they turned it into a 3D game.

syler4815162342
syler4815162342

@eternaldragoonx So SmartAss what's your point? we said that they forgot about PoP series they don't invest on it like AC! we are not talking about the 2D history of PoP

eternaldragoonx
eternaldragoonx

@syler4815162342 @rarson They released a 2d POP game about 2 years ago dumbass and they have done 2d about 4-5 other in the past 10 years. Just not on consoles.
