Report: Man Subdues Intruder Using Possible Video Game Gun

24-year-old able to keep intruder at bay until police arrived using a fake gun.

Of note: We don't know which video game gun was used to subdue the intruder. This is just one possibility.

[UPDATE] This story has been updated to more accurately represent the story and its source. The CBS Pittsburgh story says it's "likely" that the fake gun was for a video game, though this is not confirmed.

The original story is below.

How did you spend your Sunday? For a 24-year-old Pittsburgh man, it involved subduing an intruder with a prop gun he was using to play a video game.

CBS Pittsburgh reports that a 24-year-old Oakland man (Oakland is a part of Pittsburgh) was playing a video game with headphones on when someone knocked on his door asking for a person he didn't know.

The resident said he felt threatened, and then wielded a prop gun to keep the intruder at bay until police came to the scene. It's not clear what game the person was playing, but games from the Cabela's hunting series support gun peripherals, and Nintendo offers a Wii Zapper gun.

Those guns, however, don't look all that realistic.

The accused burglar has since been identified and was subsequently charged with burglary, criminal trespassing, and possession of a criminal instrument, according to a Pittsburgh public safety spokesperson.

When people knock on my door asking for people I don't know, I routinely point a gun at them. It's the only way to feel safe these days.

By the headline, it sounds like the police were the ones using a fake gun.

(face palm)  Just buy a REAL gun, kid!  If the intruder found out the gun was fake, he would've killed you.

He does realize the movie Airheads was fiction, right?

This definitely took place in the States. If this situation happened in the UK then the 24 year-old would have been arrested for wielding an imitation firearm.

Did the stupid criminal think it shot lasers too?

I don't understand. The criminal knocked at the door and asked for someone who doesn't live there. So guy pulls out a fake gun to detain him until police arrive? Did the criminal do anything criminal to the guy with the fake gun? Or is he a criminal because of something else he did yesterday?

So pretty much everyone is guessing what kind of gun was used including the original story author. Typical media skewering.

This is normal.  Most thieves are dumb.

lol, it's pretty sad when a gun DESIGNED to look like a toy can fool anyone with half a brain cell.

I imagine that he was using the Magnavox Odyssey gun. It's basically a fake shotgun, but it looks authentic.

Well, the intruder knew what he was doing. Gamers are anti-social criminals, desensitized to violence and prone to school shootings.

Meh, who hasn't subdued a criminal with a toy gun?  Next!

If only he had a video game zapper, none of this would have occurred - new quote of the internets

Why didn't the intruder just run away? Being able to detain him with a fake gun until police showed up is pretty impressive.

He was in the mans bed room... not at his front door

Um, maybe this article needs a fact checker?  The intruder was actually in the home, not knocking on the door from the outside.

@Phil-teh-Pirate If you read the article, the man was in his house on the second floor in his room. while he was in his boxers....

@DrKill09 Statistically, that just leads to the death of the gun owner more than not. You don't confront home invaders unless you're a cold blooded murderer yourself. Most people aren't quick to fire a gun even in self-defense. You need to call the cops, lock yourself in the bed room, and don't confront them. Keep the gun for protecting yourself in the bed room. In the same statistic, the home invader murdered the home owner with the home owners gun.

Let alone, confronting a home invader is dumb to begin with. Home owners are committing a felony by being in your house (at least here they are) so expect them to be packing.

Maybe it was dark so the gun looked like a normal weapon. I doubt my bright blue Lethal Enforcers gun will fool anyone otherwise even if I told h it is a flare gun (ignoring the cord to the Sega Genesis)

Some squirt guns can be painted black to look like a real gun. Would you really be so confident if you didn't know for sure?

@blackothh I hardly think it's media skewering, it's more like.

"Man, that criminal was a major dumbass and there's probly only one or two gun peripherals that look realistic.  On top of that, it's the one unknown here.  I wonder what the gun was."

Iunno man, I wouldn't call basic human curiosity media skewering..

@kikook @DrKill09 You're the kind of guy home invaders are hoping for. An anti-gun wuss who will roll over.

Anyone comes in my house illegally, they either get a .45 in their head or a shotgun blast to the chest.

Fatalv

@kikook @DrKill09 Wrong. "Cops" are NOT by definition there to protect you or your property. They are first responders, nothing else. The entire phrase "serve and protect" has been blown out of proportion.

If you want to defend yourself, own a firearm, take a few classes, get a concealed carry permit, and be knowledgable about the limitations of your firearm. Most thieves are not expecting resistance and would likely crap their pants when confronted with a 1911 less than 4 inches from their face...
