Report: Amazon to launch set-top box in March -- Will it play games?
Sources say retail giant aiming to launch product next month that will compete with Apple TV and Roku, but whether or not it will be a gaming hub remains to be seen.
Retail behemoth Amazon will launch its rumored set-top Web TV box in March, sources have told Recode, the site founded by former editors at The Wall Street Journal. The box will reportedly compete directly with Apple TV and Roku products, in that it will supposedly make it easy for you to access video content on your TV.
This untitled box will reportedly be powered by Google's Android operating system--which doesn't come as much of a surprise. After all, Amazon's Kindle Fire tablets also run on a version of Android.
It remains to be seen, however, if Amazon's rumored box will also serve as a gaming hub.
We know that Amazon has increased its gaming-related hiring of late, and a past report from VG247 said the device would play games like the Ouya console and release in 2014 below $300. However, Recode's report today did not mention gaming at all and Amazon declined to comment.
Amazon surprised many earlier this month when it announced that it had acquired Killer Instinct and Strider developer Double Helix Games for an undisclosed sum.
