Rage, 3DS top Game Critics' E3 Awards

Postapocalyptic combat racer takes home three awards, but Nintendo's new handheld walks off with Best of Show.

With the 2010 Electronic Entertainment Expo over and done with, the Game Critics Awards winners have surfaced. The committee gave three accolades to id Software's Rage, but top honors went to Nintendo's new portable.

Best of Show went to the 3DS, Nintendo's innovative portable that supports 3D without the need for glasses. The device also won the Best Hardware honor, beating out Sony's PlayStation Move for the PlayStation 3 and Microsoft's full-body gesture recognition tech for the Xbox 360, Kinect.

The 3DS certainly popped out at critics.

Prior to voting, id Software's Rage led the nomination pack with five nods, including Best of Show, Best Original Game, Best Console Game, Best PC game, and best Action game. Rage turned in three of those nominations, securing the Best Console Game, Best Action Game, and Special Commendation for Graphics.

Electronic Arts led all competing publishers with four awards: Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit (Best Racing Game), Rock Band 3 (Best Social/Casual Game), Star Wars: The Old Republic (Best Role-Playing Game), and NBA Jam (Best Sports Game). The closest competing publisher to EA was Bethesda with three awards (all from Rage).

The Game Critics Awards are doled out by a cross section of 31 mainstream and enthusiast gaming media outlets, with the panel of judges hailing from such online and print publications as GameSpot, Wired, USA Today, and others. To qualify for an award, the game must be shown in a playable form running on its native platform.

@BryanBadillo No, Goldeneye on N64 was pretty big. How about this, okay. Not all gamers are created equal, for some reasons some like this and others not so. The format of opinion differs between each individual, and that's one of the best things of gaming, we can all make our own playing style, or favoured genre without the help of others, it's simply put into perspective on how you perseve the quality of the game. In short, you may enjoy halo, so why should that bother anyone unless I or someone else starts throwing stones on the basis that I think this one is better than that one etc. I think that if playing the game makes you happy, you shouldn't have to explain it or rethink it based on my opinions. So let's just quit this silly argument and agree that games are more useful when played rather than talked about.

@sithodah Its obvious that halo was not the first fps in the pc. But halo was the first succecsfull console fps. so almost evrey fps out there (on consoles) are thanks to Halo.

Fredrik1ST
Fredrik1ST

@BryanBadillo *sigh* Way to ignore the topic. Short version: There were tons of FPSes before Halo and it would never have been made if it hadn't been for those.

sithodah

@BryanBadillo The he'll are you talking about? Doom was hugely popular! It's the game that started the craze for fps's. Fps's were a fraction of the market before doom came onto the scene. And I'm not really that big on doom. It's a damn good game, but duke nukem 3d passes it in more ways than one. Duke Nukem 3d came out in 1996, and it's so much better than halo it's not even funny. Halo is an inferior game in my opinion to so many other games that offer so much more.

BryanBadillo
BryanBadillo

@sithodah @Fredrik1st I wont discuss this with people that think to know everything just because they play Doom. I have Doom 2 right and i can assure you that is very different from halo CE. Why you think Halo became so famous and doom not ?. I like doom i buy Doom 3 and download Doom 2 but it docent compare to halo.

@BryanBadillo That what all morons do when they've been cornered, they give up and insult the other. Halo in 1997? Don't give me that s***. Quake came out 1996 (I'm pretty sure) and that was the first fully 3d game. So no. Your lies depress me.

Fredrik1ST
Fredrik1ST

@BryanBadillo Not to cause any flamewar or ruin your moment here, but Halo didn't exist before late 2001. Saying it got released for Mac in ''1997 or earlier'' is total BS. Also, the control scheme most FPS'es use today has it roots in Doom and Quake. Two classics that came out a decade before Halo. Do some research before bringing up arguments like that. (I don't have anything against Halo. I think it is a quite fun game.)

@sithodah I wont continue this stupid fight... I don't care if you like Halo or not but stop saying stupids things like a little Fan boy... OK?

sithodah
sithodah

@BryanBadillo why do you keep saying i no nothing about the storyline. ive played through the damn game, and the story, gameplay, and basically everything is s***! the controls, were NOT from halo, okay fan boy? why wont this penetrate your simple mind. the gameplay has been taken from games like doom, and duke nukem 3d. the difference is that those games were fun. halo is a terrible game. and yes i have played it, i own it, i got it as a present a long time ago. so don't deny my experience with the game. its an abomination of FPS's.

BryanBadillo
BryanBadillo

@sithodah I wont discuss this with you because clearly you don't know a thing about halo storyline. And again what halo create was the simple control scheme that almost every shooter use today. and by the way Halo get release in Mac around 1997 or earlier. "Quake in 1996 Counter-strike in 1999" none of those games have brought the control and game play from halo. Do you ever play Halo CE? (I think not)

I say Best of show should have gone to the ID tech 5 (not necessarily Rage, but the engine that it was built on because it gave the PC a run for its money making the 360 and PS3 look amazing!) Online I think should have gone to Gears, but I can understand them giving it AC:Brotherhood. Best PC game should have gone to either SW:TOR or CIV 5 only because they are the only true PC games out of the 5. Action/adventure should have gone to either DS2 or AC:Brotherhood because no offence, but Portal 2 isn't an action or an adventure game because your are doing predetermined puzzles. I think Epic Mickey should have won the original game category because there is absolutely nothing new with a dance game.

@BryanBadillo Halo created nothing. Okay, how about this. Let's say theirs zombies, in space ships. There, I just made a universe. The halo series was hugely over-hyped and story could have been thought up by a 9 year old. Half-life strory took place in a much more realistic and believeable setting and the characters were so much memorable and their dialogue and voice actors was all so we'll done. Once again, halo didn't invent the simple run-and-gun. Halo came out in 2003. Doom in 1993. Halo brought nothing to the genre, and the whole series in inferior to so many other games to count. It's just another case of an over hyped game that a bunch of people bought for some unknown reason. Quake in 1996 Counter-strike in 1999

BryanBadillo
BryanBadillo

@sithodah You see, you don't know anything about the halo story. Halo is a complete universe while Half-life is just a game, a great f@cking game. And yes Halo did create the gameplay. Halo was the first game were you had only tow weapons to carry and a simple button to throw grenades and give meele. Halo was the first FPS to had vehicles and the recharge health system . Halo was since 1997 or 1998. So yes he was the game that revolutionize all so more respect please.

@BryanBadillo Halo has a better story than anything by valve? Are you serious? The half-life is definarely not the best story around, but it sir the he'll is better than halo's. And halo didn't invent the gameplay, we already had this kind of gameplay from doom, wolfenstein 3d, and counter strike. The difference was that the weapons you in those games, the weapons were fun to use. Unlike the boring ones from halo.

BryanBadillo
BryanBadillo

@sithodah Valve is one of my favorite company, but is clearly that you are just telling craps about something that you don't really know a thing. Halo storyline is much bigger and elaborate than any other game make by valve (but you clearly don't know that). Halo use basics fps game play because Halo was the first one to bring that style to games, so what you call basics is the halo game play since CE, thats why it became so famous. Right now Halo major threat is Halo CE because it was so f@cking good that is almost impossible to overpass. Sorry for my English and my three favorite companies are Bungie, Valve and Bioware!

How are four of five "best of show" nominees software, and then they decide to give the award to the only hardware nomination? Seems ironic to me. However, Rage is bound to be an amazing game. Bethesda has done very well as a publisher, in distinguishing which games have potential to be great games. Two of the few games I'm excited to play are Fallout: New Vegas, and Rage. Both published by Bethesda. Definately gonna be a a good fiscal year for Bethesda.

The reason I think this E3 rocked is exactly because there were a lot of cIassic franchises. Innovation does not equal quality or entertainment, while improved gameplay to an already superb game will indeed be genuine entertainment. Honestly, sometimes I think gamers are too spoiled...me included, of course.

@CHAMPION6171994 sorry, halo blows, get used to it. want me to elaborate? it uses basic FPS game play, which is okay except for one thing, there's no pull, whats special about it? all the weapons feel useless and none are fun to use, basic fps is okay, but when it doesn't give you something that makes it any better than some other FPS, whats the point? the storyline, sucks, its basically space invaders on a ring, but with the "twist" of fighting different other bad guys towards the end. you say that valve has just made the same old s*** like bungie with ALL their games? ever heard of portal? or maybe the gravity gun? Half-Life 2 had a balance of good storyline, a good cast of characters, great game play, and putting physics based puzzles as a large part of the game. then halo is just, Go here, Kill that. and no i don't hate halo because i suck at it, only morons do that. i played the game and didn't enjoy it at all i was hugely unimpressed with the game. and i honestly don't have one favorite game, Half-life 2, duke nukem 3d and team fortress 2 are all the games i play most. damn, duke Nukem 3D came out 1996 and its way better than Halo. Halo is good is your feeling generic.

@xblane Being a platformer isn't what makes it original, the execution of the game does. The paint and thinner used to edit the platforming, the story, and the art style are all far more original than Dance Central.

What do you get when you take an awesome machine like the DS; give it a graphics upgrade; add an analog stick; give it 3D with no glasses and with the option to vary the depth and then top that with amazing first party titles such as Star fox and OOT as well as super amazing third party support with the likes of MGS and Resident Evil? The 3DS!

to be fair - E3 was crap wasnt it? nothing new, no real jumps... re-hashed games, sequels that look like the last one and motion controls. boring. i commend the critics here... cos lets face it... they had next to nothing to work with. It must have taken 15 minutes to delegate the majority of the awards. i totally agree about the 3DS taking home the most awards.... it was the only thing there that piqued my interest one little bit and the only thing there pushing something new. I own all of the consoles and WILL buy a 3DS..... cant say the same for move of kinect until they have proper games displaying the power of the hardware.
