QuakeCon 2011 Aftermath

GameSpot's QuakeCon attendees chat about the show itself and one of its biggest games, Skyrim.

by

One of gaming's oldest fan-focused conventions had a lot going on this year. In addition to the assortment of tournaments, QuakeCon provided an opportunity for id software to show the latest from its postapocalyptic, first-person shooter, Rage. Meanwhile, Bethesda revealed more gameplay details for the highly anticipated The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and its newly announced game, Dishonored. Maxwell McGee and Ryan MacDonald both attended QuakeCon for GameSpot and took some time out of their schedules to discuss how QuakeCon has evolved over the years and what they thought of one of the biggest games at the show.

@armedvigilante Yeah you're probably right, but I have so little faith in Bethsoft's people I bet they'll find a way to screw up with their infinity dragons.

@marcosrtc i agree 100% characters where boring ugly and all sounded the same! the only character that stood out was sheogorath from the shivering isles and he turned into a grumpy silver man (who was also the easiest final boss of anything i ever played haha)

@lindallison i know i think that will work much better because fighting a dragon is much more fun then going into a hellgate and it gives a better reward (a moderate enchantment isnt really worth going to a bland lava world for) dragon shouts are way better than sigil stones they will actually be fun to use and theres no other way to get them(were as u could get enchantments just from the mages guild)

Skyrim looks awesome!! I agree 100% with the oblivion gates, they were the reason I never finished the first game I hated them so much. Even the dark brotherhood couldn't handle living on an island in a lake of lava, no wonder they wanted to close them so badly.. HA!

Ok, finally finished the main storyline in Oblivion this past weekend (almost 5 years later!) I just hope the story in Skyrim makes you feel more invested - or at least draws you into the plot a bit more. I felt a little too disconnected in Oblivion. And i agree with the poster who said Oblivion gates suck - they really do. So annoying. Otherwise, that was one hell of an RPG experience. Can't wait to get my hands on Skryrim! Shadow hide you! LOL

i have this on pre-order but am having my doubts about it now after I hear "expanding on Oblivion" and "not being rebooted".

This segments are both really well done. Gamespot needs to have more of these mediated segments. Particularly with these dudes.

Thats the problem the generic characters are off , theres no impression of human relates , what i mean , no personality , but thats the only thing that could be corrected , but the rest is in optimal condition , the ''fictional world'' is greatly represented and designed , and the detail of including dragons in to the path of the game is great !! Its going to be a good game !!!

The NPCs in Oblivion were not interesting at all, just generic characters with no personality. If they manage to create interesting NPCs this time then I will be hugely pleased.

They don't have to make Skyrim perfect, they just have to avoid making it suck. That mainly means sticking to their classic recipe: vast open world, massively customizable character (looks and skills), a good backstory, tons of interesting sidequests, interesting NPCs, and extreme modability. If they can make a more engaging main quest, plus make the dialogue and voice acting as fun and interesting as in Fallout or ME, that would be awesome. Well, whatever. I'm just excited about all the potential mods people are going to create. Also, I love how in the 2nd vid they show some Uber-PC rigs with giant fans, liquid cooling and a ton of LED lighting... then right after they show someone playing Minecraft. xD

Was really not a big fan of oblivion it looked good and all the but i would just get real bored playing it. I will check out Skyrim but the fact the said they are dullnig down certain RPG aspects of the game has really turned me off from all the hype..

@armedvigilante They streamlined the Oblivion Gates, they're called 'dragons' now. Sigil Stones are Dragon Shouts. This combines two of Bethsoft's best ideas - Oblivion Gates and Cliff-Racers.

@calypso73 Bethesda always takes sooo long to release any good info, I think its because Todd is so anal about HIS game.

They need to hurry up and put another Skyrim video up showcasing more action or one of the cities. I was expecting something new as well. Im a tad bit disappointed

well i hope they worked on the main story. i really didnt like oblivions main story it was kind of stereotypical and bland. and i HATED going into oblivion gates.

now that skyrim has now designated spells to one hand does this mean that i cnt use a shield and sword and have a spell on top of that like on the on oblivion

@darkoil4 I played oblivion for roughly 200 hours too, and I find it insulting that you'd even consider it equal to dark souls.

@Chilloutcolin Yeah, I watched a 40 minute recording of the gameplay on 'lo-ping.org'. Just google 'skyrim gameplay' and you'll see it not far down the list.

Once Again, You show nothing New. Don't you guys understand that we don't care What you editors think it will be like and what You expect of it?? We want to see something new!! Something that will make me wish for this game even more-so than now!. I really don't care what you guys think about it, sorry. But I do know that most people here pressed this link expecting to see a new Vid from Quake-Con hopefully, and felt like they just got trolled when All they saw is you guys interviewing yourselves. I'm just putting it out there. :(

@iwilleatutoo first of all, TES: Skyrim, is an rpg lol, not sure where you got FPS from. Second of all its his opininon, if he likes em he likes em, although its odd that he decides to post his negative things about the game on the comments of the game :P

darkoil4

@Torvar72 im sure that both batman and dark souls will be really great games but lets be fair you shouldn't even say their names in the same sentence as Skyrim, oblivion my first play through was about 80 hours, then i eventually got the GOTY and completed absolutely everything on it and that took about anouther 80 hours of my time. Morrowind along with tribunal and the other expansions took up well over 200 hours of my time and i wasn't even anywhere near completing it, god please let them bring back the ridiculous enchanting and spell making from morrowind and scrap the 35 level cap from oblivion.

iwilleatutoo
iwilleatutoo

@Torvar72 - There are alot better games coming out than Skyrim?! the 2 games you named aren't even the same as Skyrim! they aren't even fps! one's an rpg and the other is batman! granted, they look like they're gonna be great games but, to say there are "better" games coming out this year than one of the most anticipated games of the last year and a half is just ridiculous! lmao :D no interest?! ha

@agentmurdoch Agreed. Only two games I preordered for this fall out of the MANY that will be falling from the sky.

Elder Scrolls aways ends up winning GoTY, and it always deserves it.

@funkydude I should've thought about my question a bit more before posting it - incorporating an oblivion save wouldn't make much sense. Though it would be nice to keep some of the magical weapons/armor I crafted in Oblivion - lord knows i spent enough time crafting them! LOL

funkydude31
funkydude31

@monktheking Probably not, i don't think any bethesda game has had you incorporate save data from previous games, we have just gotten spoiled because of bioware. Plus, skyrim is in a totally different area, different plot, new characters new setting etc etc, its completely separate from oblivion so there is no reason to import data. It seems the games that import save data are fairly story driven, as we can see from playing oblivion for 100hrs without touching the main story, I don't think that qualifies.

monktheking
monktheking

Oh , one more thing - will Skyrim incorporate your Oblivion save at all?

monktheking

@patrickpyro I like the sound of varying difficulty based on area - Sounds like you could still grind a little and dominate certain areas.

patrickthepyro
patrickthepyro

@monktheking They havent said anything for sure yet. In one of the demos he said it will be similar to Fallout3, as there will be tougher areas of the game and in some areas things may level up with you, but im still waiting for a concrete answer as well :P

Note "(quakecon 40 minute demo)" is not part of the URL lol

I put in over 300 hrs on Oblivion and i'm still not finished! I could see myself easily pouring 500+ hours into Skryim. Is 1000 hours out of reach? I just hope they add more variety in the NPC voices and faces - i realize this is nitpicking but it sort of annoyed me in Oblivion. Does anyone know if the enemy levelling system is the same as Oblivion where enemies level up as you do?

@RockmasteR-_-, It's sort of like the covers for the Mass Effect series. I don't know if you've played Mass Effect (you really ought to, if not), but it uses a default version of the main character on the box art. In Mass Effect, you can choose to play with that default appearance, or create your own custom character. The same goes for Skyrim, except that in the Elder Scrolls series, there is no continuing character or even a default character model to choose - you "sculpt" your own. I think they're just using this male nord warrior to tie in the mythos of the new game and to give prospective customers someone to relate to in terms of the story.

patrickthepyro
patrickthepyro

@RockmasteR-_- You can still create your own character using the 10 oblivion races.

I have no interest in Skyrim. There are better games than this coming out this year. Case in point Batman AC and Dark Souls
