PS4s Could Be Sold With Destiny and Diablo III Preloaded, Says Analyst

Digital copies of Activision games would be available for purchase without a download.

Sony may begin selling PlayStation 4 systems with digital copies of select Activision games already loaded onto them so they are ready for purchase, according to Baird analyst Colin Sebastian.

In a Baird investors note sent out recapping developments at E3, the possibility of preloaded games is brought up. "One point of interest from our conversations at the show is the possibility that Sony may preload digital copies of Destiny and Diablo on all PS4 consoles beginning this fall (users still can choose whether to purchase), which should drive higher sell-through for Activision, but at the cost of retail sales," it states.

The white PS4 Destiny bundle announced at E3.

In other words, it sounds as if the games would be downloaded to the systems' hard drives but would still need to be purchased like usual. This would presumably be done in order to encourage purchases of the games, and to spare new PS4 owners the trouble of downloading them--something which is an insignificant hurdle for some, but a major impediment for others due to slow Internet connections and data caps. And, for those who do decide to purchase a digital copy rather than a physical one, this would have the added benefit to Activision of disallowing these people from ever selling their copies of these games.

GameSpot has reached out to both Sony and Activision regarding these potential plans but has not received a response as of press time.

While Call of Duty's downloadable content continues to come to Xbox platforms first (as it has for several years now), at least one of Activision's most important games, Destiny, has been positioned as a PlayStation-oriented game. It's frequently featured in PS4 commercials, the ongoing alpha test is available only on PS4, next month's beta launches first on PS4 and PS3, exclusive content is coming to PS4 and PS3, and a white PS4 bundle that includes a copy of the game will be available in September. For its part, developer Bungie says it isn't favoring PlayStation over Xbox.

As for Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition, it was originally slated for release on PS4 but not Xbox One, although we now know it'll be coming to both. However, the PlayStation versions will have exclusive content centered around PlayStation exclusives The Last of Us and Shadow of the Colossus.

Would having games available on the hard drive right out of the box make you any more inclined to purchase a digital copy? Let us know in the comments below.

This is a good idea. That way, if you plan on purchasing a PS4 and these were games you had plan on buying, then they are already there. No need to download them, only have to purchase the games to play. And if these are games that you're not interested in, then no harm, no foul, just delete them off the hard drive. It would be nice to purchase a PS4 with the top 5 games already on the hard drive.

the ONLY inclined reason i will go digital (and i probably speak for half the gamers out their if not more) if console had bigger hard drives. The next gen  console all came up short because of small HDD. if companies really want this digital era to come up then they need to focus on memory. Besides all computer run off memory and that what need to be invested at.

why so many outcry? x1 did FIFA, forza, titanfall and no up in arms unfair wasting space type comments back then, I'm guessing there will be a ps4 white, ps4 jet black, ps4 with preloaded so that there is choice or maybe with the white ps4 it has it preloaded cuz that would make sense as it is white for destiny

As long as the cost of the console doesn't increase. Digital games are worthless. The Xbox 360 originaly shipped with Hexic HD and i think one other game pre-loaded but those were tiny.

"but a major impediment for others due to slow Internet connections and data caps"...

Analysts must be on crack these days. A company is going to save people the headache of downloading a couple of games (because they may have trouble) despite the fact that the games are essentially designed for online co-op/competitive play.

The absurd thing is that Activision may actually seek to do something like this...

Not gonna be like that damn singstar thing on ps3 is it? Can't stand having things clog up the UI and not being able to get rid of them.

Isn't the "bloatware" that's pre-installed the reason why you get a bundled console in the first place? If you don't want any pre-installed games clogging up space, don't buy a pre-installed bundle.

Nope. I wouldn't buy a digital copy and, wouldn't want any preloaded into a system. I own a PC business. One thing I hate is when PC manufacturers preload bloatware and other garbage they are so sure will add value to the system and their owners will want to use. Every time I setup a new system for someone, I have to spend 30 minutes or more uninstalling all the garbage they preload.

I know people who don't plan on buying the games could delete them - at least I hope it would be setup that way. But, they shouldn't have to. I highly doubt that even 30% of the people who buy PS4's in the future will want either one of these games. Why should they have to go through the trouble of deleting them just so a small minority doesn't have to download them? You don't make things easier for some customers by inconveniencing others.

Ouch.  Took a stab in the heart.  I was getting ready to buy a PS4, until I realized they were putting bloatware on it.  Assholes.

I would totally buy that ps4 edition if those games would come pre-loaded and for FREE. I have my 400 euros prepared for some time now for the console, but the lack of good games prevented me from buying.

ATTENTION SONY!!!! Look Dell and HP have the laptops. Samsung and LG have the TV's. Walk-Man well those are built in to our cell phones now. I think you should just put 100% of Sony into the PLAYSTATION. Imagine all of research and development pored into a console. Take over the gaming world with a BEAST of a machine. Deep down inside you know I am right SONY.

Oh great, as if on-disc DLC wasn't bad enough, we now get on-console full games that you need to pay money for to unlock.

Thankfully this is a "Analyst's say" article, so I think we are safe.

So to break it down, in order for this to be the solution for YOU, the following criteria would have to be met:

A) You have $60.

B) You aren't willing spend a small amount of time to download it and play something else, watch TV, or talk to your friends and family in the meantime.

C) You are a part-time invalid that only leaves the house to go to McDonald's and are too lazy to make a slight detour to Gamestop/Best Buy/etc.

Say yes to all three? Then this is the solution for you!

Preloaded, this is all I ever wanted, some of us don't have internet at home or LIVE so have no use for the damn download codes, just preload the damn game in the HDD, Its been two or so years that I been sitting a Skyrim download code that came with my X360 and at this rate am have to buy a Skyrim disk as the code is off no use to me

I am still wondering with PS4 being so potent and PC-like... is World of Warcraft coming to console? Seems they are getting awefully chumming with Activision/Blizzard.

It wouldn't kill Sony to put a damn creative paint job on the Destiny PS4 console bundle.

crunchb3rry

Yeah...because hard drives aren't too damn small to begin with. I've got 4 or 5 games on my One and it's half full. It's like consoles can finally compete with PC...but not off a disc anymore. I'm going to be hurting, because my 360 HDD is jam-packed just from DLC. Can't imagine the headaches in store for this new generation. I think games should just come on thumbdrives from now on, lol.

youre_a_sheep

If someone has download speed/access issues, they can buy the disc version.  This is a solution looking for a problem.  I clicked expecting to read about an upcoming bundle.  Give me a slim/revamped PS4 with a 1TB hard drive and Dragon Age Inquisition for $450 and I'll step into next gen.

SkyAboveThePort
SkyAboveThePort

Not everybody interested in those titles. Preloading takes away hdd space for them. They should package install media (disks) instead. Those could hold all files to be copied, but require purchase / activation. The people who came up with the preloading idea are just cheaping out.

TheExxorcist
TheExxorcist

Personally I prefer digital copies... no you can't resell them... but, you break your cd, your house burns down, someone breaks in. Your disk copy is history... If you ever wana play it again, you have to buy it...

Also some technical pros for digital

-Hard drives load faster

-Hard drives rarely fail

-Hard drives are swappable

-You don't need to get up and swap your disk out constantly

-prolonge the live of your optical drive

-prolonge the life of your PSU (It takes more juice to spin/read a disk

-prolonge the life of your console (more power=more heat) more heat=less life (technically) think about it... I know these arguments are nit picky, but if you wana be technical in the long run... An HDD puts way less heat out then a Disk Drive... but using Disk based games uses both.... why when you don't have to?

Plus i have a 500gb Samsung SSD in my PS4... it runs circles around disk times

My PS4 runs quiet, cool and fast...

@likitb4ustikit even if you own the hard copys next gen games install fully on the hdd either way you save no space going physical with next gen.

xantufrog
xantufrog

@KamuiFei exactly - I don't think this means every vanilla PS4 is going to have 50GB of space missing for a game you didn't want.

@cyber_dragon19  In all honesty that is something Sony really needs to look at doing (maybe splitting the company up in a constructive way, but they can't dump everything, at least not quickly) as they really aren't that competitive in those markets anymore.  Maybe they still do well with the TV's but they really need to drop pretty much everything else as it's too much overhead for them and a lot more competition (that usually kills sony price / quality wise).

Never put all your eggs in one basket.

Invest in 5 or more baskets, that way if

one basket of eggs is accidentally destroyed

you still have 4 baskets left.

@TheExxorcist  Ok some fact checking. (for PS4)

1. Everything has to load on HDD regardless.

2. The disk checks but it does stop spinning after a bit.

@VooDooPC @TheExxorcist Dude I'm fine with digital downloads but microsofts original idea was a bullshit mess. Anyone who wants DD can get them if they want, and you know this will only increase in the future.

Have all your games as DD but don't let these companies set ridiculous rules in the process.

pspearman
pspearman

@jer_1 It wasn't though, MS' original plan was to provide everyone the benefits of digital ownership whether bought online or at retail but still maintain a used game market etc. The only drawback was the 24hr online check but that was necessary to make sure people were not playing games they had already traded in.
