Almost a year ago to the day, an HBO Go app was released for PlayStation 3. Sony said at the time that it was continuing to work "diligently" on a PS4 version, but after 15 months on the market, the system is still without an HBO app--despite a great deal of demand. The day for that to change has finally arrived: HBO Go is coming to PS4 today.

Sony announced the news on the PlayStation Blog today, describing it as functioning "just like the PS3 version." You'll need an HBO subscription (or have a friend willing to share one) in order to get any use out of the app. Once it's released later today as part of the weekly PlayStation Store update, you'll be able to head to HBOGO.com/activate to activate the app.

HBO Go, for those who don't know, is HBO's free video-streaming service for subscribers. It includes a rotating selection of movies as well as much of its TV backlog, including everything from Game of Thrones to The Wire. There are some notable omissions, however, including things like The Ricky Gervais Show and Mr. Show.

Currently, an HBO subscription requires that you have cable or satellite TV, but that will soon change, as it plans to soon offer a streaming-only subscription option.
