PS4 now officially on sale in Japan

Sony launches next-generation console in 49th region worldwide.

The PlayStation 4's world tour continues, as the console is now available in Japan. The clock just struck midnight in Sony's home region and gamers there can now begin buying the system. The PS4 sells for 39,980 yen in Japan, or around $390.

The PS4 is now available in 49 countries worldwide and has sold over 5.3 million units as of February 8. This number will only increase now that the system is available in Japan.

Sony celebrated the PS4 launch in Japan with a special midnight launch event featuring speeches from various Sony executives as well as game designers like Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima.

Japan only accounts for 10% of the market, this will hardly mean much.

So does this mean we might finally see some Japanese games on a next-gen console or is that a crazy pipedream?

PS4 should have gone on sale in Japan first.

Regardless of which side of the console war you stand, you have to admit that Sony's marketing is creepy and racist.  Note the white guy holding the PS4 in Japan.  When the PS4 debuted in North America, it was shown with a Japanese guy holding one.  It's clearly a message to both territories that it's ok to buy their console.  I don't have a problem with that, but I do have a problem with how they deliberately used race to convey that.

Very sleazy and it makes me not want one - ever.

BS4 or DoorstopStation 4 or Underpowered 4 or 30fps Station 4 yea that's better

There definitely will be some Japanese games :D

While I was over there, I saw a bunch of PS4 games available for pre-order that I hadn't seen or even heard of back home.

Japan accounts for 10% of the video gamer industry lagging far behind North America and Europe. It makes no sense to launch there first.

Oh the hilarity.....So we should all just not buy ps4 and solve racism eh??.....You should be made the racial minister of the world...or some minister at least.

How do you even know the guy was japanese? They never said he was japanese. You know why? Because he's American! You are a racist idiot! He was also the first person in line.

@Sevenizz  Sigh. The picture above is Andrew House about to hand a PS4 to the first customer to get a PS4 in Japan (who happens to be Japanese, not "a white guy"). If you search for Joey Chiu online you can also find the pic from the North American launch, which also shows Andrew House about to hand a PS4 to the first customer to get a PS4 in North America (Joey Chiu, who is American, not Japanese).

@Sevenizz Sony's really on another level with the way they're selling this thing , it's like a secret smear campaign and they're using fellow Japanese to do it.

freedom01

@Sevenizz  if you think that way then you are the one who is racist, also that "white guy" you are talking about is Andrew House, the guy who did the reveal during E3, who is also the CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment

Joeguy00
Joeguy00

@Sevenizz

The "white guy" as you call him is one of the head honcho's of PlayStation and was at both events. You are being racist by thinking an asian american is a Japanese plant just to be racist... FFS.

@lonesamurai1  The more you knock it, the more I love it.  PC is for writing term papers. Consoles are for all the best games.

Sevenizz

Supporting a company who uses race to promote a product is still racism. It's a matter of opinion if you want to buy their products. Personally, I chose not to.

Sevenizz
Sevenizz

If you can't tell the difference between a Japanese person vs other Asian races, you might want to check your racism.

Sevenizz

If you don't think the ethnicity is on purpose in both photos - you know anything about marketing.

Sevenizz

And who would know that not knowledgeable about Sony hierarchy? Sorry, my comment stands. This is racist marketing pure and simple.

@tinyname PS4 is for playing games with compromises, way to many compromises.

Joey Chiu (the young man from the North American launch) is Chinese. However he's actually learning to speak Japanese, so if he ever moves over there and becomes a citizen of Japan you might be able to come back to this thread in a year or two and have a little more to back you up in this argument about his race/nationality, (but you'd still be wrong) lol

hadlee73
hadlee73

@Sevenizz  You first claimed Sony were using race because they used a white guy to market it in Japan and a "Japanese" guy to market it in the US, but in both cases the exact same white guy handed it on both occasions to the first customer, who in Japan was Japanese, and in America was American (I have no idea if Joey's parents were Japanese or another Asian nationality, but the fact was he was there in line first, clearly more dedicated than all the white guys, lol).

You seem to be basing your entire opinion not on marketing, but on the photo Gamespot chose to use for this article, and ignoring what actually took place at both events.

"red dead redemption is better then EVERY single PC exclusive in existence"

-I liked RDR, but let's not be ridiculous here. That is FAR from the truth. It also shows that you're extremely young, and have no idea what you're talking about.

"PC games don't even really win game of the year awards"

Using GotY awards is a weak argument, as they really don't mean anything. That's basically the same as judging a game based off "professional" review scores. Super Mario Galaxy 2 is overall a higher rated game than RDR. Does that make it better? Not at all. GTA5 won GotY (Spike TV) over The Last of Us, does that make it a better game? I think not.

@McGregor @sambucca@lonesamurai1

That is if we don't take in consideration that close to nothing comes on the PC nowadays, that Steam had massive lay-offs, that sales at Steam have plummeted, etc...

Just look at Black Friday sales or last Christmas sales... Steam is close to agony. How long will it last selling Portal 2, Half-Life 2 or small indies?

tom2750
tom2750

@lonesamurai1 @sambucca @McGregor  and it doesn't matter if none of them impress you even tho they probably do and you're being bias but whether you are or not doesn't matter the facts are console exclusives usually get better reviews and scores then PC exclusives and if you look at gaming journalists list of top ten games it usually is like half console exclusives half multi plats occasionally someone will have like 1 PC exclusive in there list and it will be like 8+ years old and console exclusives win way more awards then PC exclusives including game of the year awards the fact of the matter is consoles DO have MUCH better exclusives then PC especially Sony and Nintendo consoles

tom2750
tom2750

@lonesamurai1 @sambucca @McGregor  red dead redemption is better then EVERY single PC exclusive in existence PC games don't even really win game of the year awards at all especially not 160 game of the year awards like red dead redemption did

tom2750

@lonesamurai1 @sambucca @McGregor  a PC being more powerful on paper does not mean it will run games better in real life or even as good as a PS4 a $550 PC will not even have any chance running games better then a PS4 probably not even as good as a PS4

@lonesamurai1 @sambucca  Consoles a dying trend? the PS4 is like that fastest selling console of all time far from dying its a growing trend

tom2750
tom2750

@lonesamurai1  project cars isn't even out yet on PS4 so how will you know its visuals compared to PC many times a consoles version of a game will look almost as good or equally as good as a high end PC running it because consoles are 1 set of hardware so developers can get so much performance out of not that impressive on paper specs a PC with the PS4 specs wouldn't be able to run a game that well but a console with similar specs to a PS4 could in many cases run a game with as good visuals as a high end gaming PC would because console versions are so optimized also better exclusives are way more important then better versions of multi plat games even tho a lot of the time a console version at least for the first like 3 years of a console cycle will look almost as good or equally as good as a high end gaming PC running it and to play games in native 4k resolution and ultra graphics settings with the highest AA and just everything set to the highest/best it could possibly go and have atleast 60 fps would need much more then just a $1500 - $2000 high end gaming PC it would need like a $5000 top of the line waste of money machine to do that aka console gaming always has been and always will be superior to PC gaming and consoles have always had the best exclusives and always will have the best exclusives

@lonesamurai1 I actually played the original Gears of War on PC. It was awesome. I was gutted when they made GoW 2 & 3 exclusive to Xbox 360 only.

lonesamurai1
lonesamurai1

@sambucca @lonesamurai1@McGregor GTA Vis coming to PC with PC specifics JUST LIKE LAST TIME except without all of the bugs that console gamers had to deal with and RDR who cares that's a game from 2010 or earlier, now is what matters, at this point the only argument a console gamer can make is exclusives and none of them impress me except for Gears of War that is the only exclusive game that I wish was on PC

sambucca
sambucca

@lonesamurai1 @sambucca@McGregorYes you can, but you can't get all the treats that come out for the consoles on the PC. Where's Red Dead Redemption? Where's GTA V? I know graphics and everything may be important to you, but there is a valid reason there to own a console as well as a PC

lonesamurai1
lonesamurai1

@sambucca @McGregor@lonesamurai1 But you're dead wrong because you can buy a $150 Nvidia GTX 750 TI and make a PC that hooks only to your TV for $550 or so and still have more power than PS4 or you can find a 3-4 year old PC you might have lying around and do the same thing and again still be more powerful than PS4.

sambucca
sambucca

@McGregor @sambucca@lonesamurai1It depends how you look at it really. Yes PC gaming is stronger than it has ever been over the last few years. But the simple truth is that less and less people are buying bulky, over-priced components and sticking them in a big box attached to a monitor and the whole thing pretty much needs it's own room. I love my PC and I have bought many multiplatform games for it simply because I generally find the experience better, maybe dying is the wrong word. It's evolving into an increasingly simpler format, the same way people think consoles are giving ground to tablets and smartphones...

lonesamurai1
lonesamurai1

@sambucca @lonesamurai1 Don't you read? or can't you consoles are the dying trend, PC Gaming is healthier than it's ever been, no let me rephrase that MASSIVELY HEALTHY.

@sambucca @lonesamurai1  You think PC Gaming is a dying trend? I have to disagree and use the millions of Steam users as the backup to my argument.

@McGregor @tinyname@lonesamurai1 FORGET THE PS4 EXCLUSIVE I ONLY CARE ABOUT 3RD PARTY TITLES YOU KNOW. the fact that Suda 51 and Square Enix announced this week that they want their games on PC also that means FFXV Konami now loves PC and show mad love with MGS Revengeance and Castlevania LOS 2 giving PC gamers updates of how the games are progressing THAT'S LOVE FROM JAPAN bottom line we get 3rd party games and that's all I care about.

McGregor
McGregor

@tinyname @McGregor @lonesamurai1  I'm still debating on which console to get. I don't need an xb1 or ps4 for multi-plats since I play them on PC. So what are some of the exclusives to convince me to buy one system over the other? Most of the games I've looked at, that I want, are on both systems, which has me leaning PS4.

sambucca
sambucca

@lonesamurai1 Man, seriously just piss off. I have a gaming PC and a PS4 and I love my PS4 even though games look waaaaaaaay better on my PC. So what? You're a sad little individual to sit there being elitist over a dying trend.

lonesamurai1
lonesamurai1

@tinyname @lonesamurai1 Who said they were Project CARS isn't exclusive to PC either and I play it everyday as racing games or sims go there is nothing like it BUT when you see how different it looks on PC compared to the Undercooked Station 4 you'll wonder why they even put it on Doorstop 4 and that goes for the other games I just mentioned. Every 3rd party title that consoles get PCs get and that's all I care for forget crappy PS4 exclusives

lonesamurai1
lonesamurai1

@tinyname @lonesamurai1 PC is for playing Watch Dogs, The Crew, Thief at 120fps in 4K if you choose, PS4 is for playing with slowdown and frame drops.
