PS4-exclusive Driveclub did experiment with virtual reality, but that's not why it was delayed

President of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida says those rumors are "totally not true"; Evolution Studios not working on Project Morpheus at all now.

by

The delay of PlayStation 4-exclusive racing game Driveclub to spring 2014 had nothing to do with the fact that developer Evolution Studios was experimenting with a virtual reality version of the game. PlayStation president of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida told GameSpot today that rumors to that effect are false.

"There's a rumor about the reason of the pushback of Driveclub was to make it Morpheus compatible...that's totally untrue," Yoshida said.

Yoshida also discussed the virtual reality version of Driveclub that Evolution Studios made using what is now known as Project Morpheus. When trying it for himself during a trip to their UK office, he said it worked well when driving at low speeds. He explained that he was able to look around the world and enjoy its scenery.

However, when he put his foot on the gas, so to speak, the experience fell apart and he began to feel the effects of motion sickness, he said. "It's kind of difficult and sickening," Yoshida said about his experiences at this level.

Right now, Evolution Studio is "not working on Morpheus at all," and is instead putting "all the effort" into finishing the game.

Explaining the Driveclub delay in October 2013, Yoshida said, "the extra time we're giving the team means the visuals and overall experience are only going to get better. We can assure you that it will be worth the wait."

yeah, the game was never to be released at launch. It was used as a counter against Forza 5. What's even more interesting, the PS4 commercial with the two guys singing, displays a larger resemblance to an Xbox One ad. I literally thought it was the first time I seen it.

It's been delayed because they are probably having trouble getting the necessary performance out of it, it's still running at 30fps based on the latest news I've read.  I guess Forza V at 1080p/60fps even with cardboard cutout crowds isn't so bad after all, 1080p/60fps isn't as easy to achieve in game like this as people think even for the PS4.

When I played it almost a year ago, it felt like I was playing an evolution of NFS Prostreet, both in terms of car handling and the graphics/visuals.

I don't think this will be the best car/racing game we will see from this console generation; but it should be pretty good. I look forward to see how it pans out.

I could understand the delay if this was the case but because Evolution aren't developing for Morpheus, this put's them in an even more precarious position as a development studio.

The game in that case has to be nothing short of spectacular on every level and the pressure must really be piling up for them now.

@Tomcat2007

The Forza demo I tried looked like it was being rendered at 800x600. It looked fucking terrible.

@Tomcat2007  There's no anti-aliasing on Forza and it's glaringly bad on larger screen sizes. PS4 games enable anti-aliasing and require more tweaking because developers actually care how games look AND perform despite what a handful of gamers say and what Microsoft consistently puts out..

@Tomcat2007  i have to agree with you but i also think they are having bigger problems than just the technical side...

@rarson @Tomcat2007  It would appear that, in racing at least, they skimped on the car models and some of the detailing because it would probably be ignored when you're at speed flying by on the rather impressive tracks.

However I'm personally not particularly pleased with said car models in the actual racing portion of the game. Brings out the jaggies in full force and they look far duller than the rather silly ForzaVista seems to suggest.

@wookiegr @Tomcat2007  but I think reviewers and gamers alike enjoyed Forza V a lot. Not many complaints about the graphics.  The worst thing is the microtransactions, the rest of the game is solid and as a launch game it's very impressive.  I would rather have a game in my hands at launch to make my console purchase worthwhile than have to wait for a year for some graphical tweaks to make videophiles happy.
