PS3/PS Vita cross-buy promotion revealed

New offer grants free copy of PS Vita version with purchase of PS3 iteration of upcoming games; promotion kicks off with PS All-Stars Battle Royale.

Gamers who purchase this November's PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale for the PlayStation 3 will score a free copy of the PlayStation Vita version, Sony Europe CEO Jim Ryan announced today at the company's briefing at Gamescom 2012.

Buy the PS3 version, get the PS Vita iteration for free.

The offer is part of Sony's new Cross Buy promotion, which also extends to Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time and Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault. No further titles were mentioned.

The announcement of Sony's new Cross Buy promotion does not come as a total surprise. In June, a Sony survey suggested the company was interested in making available such an offer. At the time, it was believed that this would be a PlayStation Plus subscriber-only offer, but Sony made no mention of limiting the promotion to subscribers today during its briefing.

GameSpot is on hand at Gamescom 2012 this week in Cologne, Germany. For more from the show, check out GameSpot's coverage of the event.

Almost and half reason for me to by a Vita. Now if they do this with a game I actually care about.

This would have been great from the start of the system, but let's face it - this doesn't negate the fact that any digital ps3 game should be playable on the vita anyway. Sure, they can still make standalone vita games that make use of the touch controls and all that, but if I bought a psn game or a full ps3 game digitally, it should play on the vita by default, not because of some half-implemented incentive system.

Why Sony didn't do this is beyond me. If it's a technical limitation (they literally have to reprogram a game for vita, and the vita is also somehow incapable of emulating ps3), well then they designed it wrong in the first place. If it's a licensing issue (3rd party developers need to sign off on it because it's technically a different platform), then offer the devs/pubs incentives to go along with it (it's Sony, I'm sure they can work something out).

I'm left thinking the only reason they didn't was that they really thought and hoped that gamers would buy two copies of what is essentially the same game, just so they could play it on the go? The fact that this is only being announced for a few titles seems more like a concession to help boost vita sales, rather than a comprehensive plan to give gamers a better experience with their device.

No one should have to pay full price for the same game on the PS3 and VIta, so this is a good promotion... Now they need every crossplay game to be made cheaper if you've already bought it, I haven't bought a vita yet (even though I think it's a great idea) just seems too expensive having to buy things you want twice, when I can avoid that by just playing the console version.

nice to hear, and a gutsy move from Sony.

This is a great move from Sony.  I like baseball, but I wasn't about to spend a combined $100 just to enable cross-play between the PS3 and Vita versions of the game.  Sony needs to do everything they can to promote Vita gaming at this point.  I hope they can get similar buy-in for non-Sony games too.

Now if they could do the same for movies and television shows (i.e. one purchase works on both devices) that would be equally awesome...

This is actually very good, especially if both games are the physical versions. I have a feeling however that the FREE PSVita version will be digital. This would be great if it worked the other way as well. Buy the PSVita version and get the PS3 version FREE. Anyway, let's wait for all the details. I'm sure there's a catch. This is Sony we're talking about. I bet you have to buy the PS3 digital version to get the offer. We'll see. I'm not jumping for joy yet.

LOL, this program will certainly help software development increase on it, hehe. It's gonna be a great video game collectors item down the road probably.

Question: is the vita game physical or digital? If digital then count me out, could barey afford the 4g memory card so I just dont have the free space. Not to mention how hard it was to FIND a memory card.  :[

Awesome!!!  It's sad the Vita isn't doing well because it's really a very impressive device.  I hope this helps it out; plus this is a huge win for people that already have one!

Sony pratically forced us to buy a PS Vita. I didin't buy a Vita yet because I really wanted to know how Cross-play would work and if we had to buy the same game twice (one for PS3 and other for PS Vita). Now I finally have a good reason to buy a PS Vita. BUT it's still not enough Sony, We want not only more Cross-play games (and Cross-buy promotions) with first-party games, we want it with third-party games too like FIFA 13, Bioshock Infinite, Borderlands 2 (if it comes to Vita too), etc. I know that maybe it's too hard, but you could make it like "buy a PS3 version and the PS Vita version is half the price, or vive-versa,  for all third-party games!". And one more thing, that you are already doing it but I like to remember, more quality exclusive games  for PS Vita, and then, maybe early next year, a price drop. And then, everybody will buy it.

Well Im getting allstars anyway so.. Oh you Sony, you so sly. I just might get a vita.

If they gave out free Vita version for every ps3 games wouldn't mine paying $60 on a new release

Buying the PS3 version and getting the Vita version free? That sounds like a Great and fantastic Idea! It will do well to promote the Vita and it's cross compatible play sh*t. I'd be down for it!

Zabiam

And yes, every game company should also include a download code for the digital version of their game in every physical copy!

Hope they do this for all cross playable PS games in the future!

This is actually a great idea IMHO.Smart marketing and getting people to buy the game on their system with incentive, thumbs up.

ALLoY1717

I've always wanted this sort of cross play ability. Sell games as licenses almost that I can use on all compatible devices.

I would love to see this taken further, for example if I buy any game on PC PS3 or Xbox I can get a digital version of that same game on all platforms it is available for. Obviously something like this would most definitely require a fee, say 5-10 bucks and you get a code that allows you to play on all systems.

I buy most of my games on the XBox 360 and limit my PS3 titles to the system specific ones (for the most part).  However, if I get a game for my Vita as well as the PS3, then it's hands down a PS3 purchase. No contest.

That's the right way to gain back popularity from gamers. If I can ask for one more thing, please stop DLC outrages, or I'd still not buy them.

They'll probably have 2 versions of the game. The PS3 version will have the Vita version right on the same Blu-ray disc, since it is large enough to hold both games. Then you can just transfer the game from your PS3 to your Vita. The other version will be a Vita only version.

This is how you do it right, if you insist on pushing such cross-compatibility.

Ya know, I never thought I'd ever say this...  Sony seems to be doing a lot of things right lately.

This would be pretty epic since I now own a Playstation Vita. Smart move Sony.

This will help the PSvita since cross platform play between Playstation 3 and the PSvita was one of the point Sony was stressing with the PSvita. The never stop playing bit in the television ads. So not having to buy 2 copies of the "same" game will help a bit with Sony's vision for the PSvita. Even though the PSvita is not quite a portable Playstation 3. I don't have any of these games so I would be willing to buy them. PS3 game and get the PSvita version for "free"

Dunno if this is good or not because I want to buy this game but....this game comes out within the same week as Nintendo Wii-U Launch. The Wii U is my Top Priority over another PS3 game. :P

I think this is awesome. This will push me to get the Vita a lot sooner than I had originally intended. Granted they keep adding games I want to play. I will watch it for a little while, and see how it goes, but I see this as being something awesome. Add in that PS+ is going to be on the Vita too and I am pretty much sold. jnerd84.blogspot

Finally ! This is what I thought they meant by cross-play when they first advertised it. Hey, crazy idea: couldn't they have done this at Vita's release to help get people to buy the system to begin with. Maybe then they wouldn't be having such a difficult time selling the system now. At least Sony is coming around to the fact people aren't willing to pay $100 for two copies of a game just to get cross-play (ie. MLB'12 The Show).

Jinzo_111887
Jinzo_111887

If they do this as a way to get people to buy new and don't use online passes on their games, I will buy games that do this even though I don't have a Vita. (It's the same reason I got Portal 2 for PS3 new. They're offering me something outside of the game I bought, which in this case is the same game on another system.)

Raeldor

Might make me consider buying a $60 cross play version of Sly, rather than a $40 Vita only version.  Smart, Sony!

Great, I'll get both in November then later sell the Vita version for easy money on eBay. Thank you Sony.

Smart move. Now QUICKLY make PSone and all cross play features available on vita!

Killer6b9

Well it is about time that someone understands that buying the game on a PS3 and on the Vita is a waste of money. They should let you cross platform your titles so you can take them with you at no additional cost. For crying out loud it is the same game....I really want to buy a Vita but until this cross platform I am just holding my money in my pocket. Sony, this is the BEST way to market your Vita. Start making Vita exclusive titles that will also help with sales of the Vita. Just my opinion....

Spacerac
Spacerac

@blackace It can't work the other way around because the Vita version is always going to be cheaper. So buy the PS3 one if you want two.

Zabiam
Zabiam

@blackace I have a feeling your right in that we probably have to buy the digital version...

(Which are sometimes almost double the price of a physical copy in Norway...)

Killer6b9

@ccanfield1 sad part is people are willing it is just most can't afford it with the economy the way that it is....

richten71

@leeko_link @Killer6b9 Or, the Blu-ray disc has enough space to hold both games on it, so you could just plug your Vita to your PS3 and transfer it that way.

Killer6b9
Killer6b9

@leeko_link you will get a code for your Vita not a physical copy......just a heads up, guess you can still sell your code....maybe....

rising_k
rising_k

@leeko_link That'll work unless if the Vita version that they are referring to is actually a digital only offer. Sony wouldn't just give you two physical copies of the same game on different platforms.

kohle36
kohle36

@Zabiam Seriously? How does that one work? In NA, they're about the same price (sometimes price drops hit physical copies first, but digitals usually follow suit shortly afterwards). Actually, if Sony and other pubs weren't being such greedy, disingenuous pricks, digital copies would be much cheaper.

A large percentage of what we pay for a physical game right now is actually retail markup. They're pretty tight about exact numbers, but these things can go as high as 40-50% on other media (I think 35% was pretty standard for games last gen). Add in manufacturing and shipping costs, and we could easily be paying close to half price for a digital copy, with the publishers and Sony making exactly the same amount of money they are right now. That's why they're pushing digital so hard, because they're hoping to keep the prices at the same level we're used to paying, and scoop the retail markup for themselves.

Why they would double the price of a digital copy in Norway makes absolutely no sense, so I can only assume it has to do with some wonky licensing regulations, or....?

fester420
fester420

@Killer6b9  @leeko_link I seriously doubt sony would let you sell your vita version.  They will most likely make you register the PS3 version and email you a code after it is tied to your account so it can only be redeemed by you.

I guarantee they will not give you a physical copy either.

kohle36
kohle36

@Zabiam  So how much does a game cost there at full retail?

Zabiam
Zabiam

@kohle36 Because Sony does not care about a little country like Norway and don't do their research good enough. they just check whit the most famous (and expensive) game shops in Norway and take 10%(or something) off that and that's the digital price.... And if we as customers in Norway search the web for 5sec we always find it cheaper and often at half the digital price...
