Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 Hands-On

We got a brand new look at Pro Evo 2010's new features ahead of the soccer sim's impending launch.

Although it has long been a favourite with football fans around the world, Pro Evolution Soccer is caught on the back foot this year. FIFA has made steady progress in recent years by improving its presentation and gameplay while adding a string of new modes. PES has also received several changes over the past few years in the form of the Champions League, as well as the introduction of its own individual player and online multiplayer modes. Despite these changes, the game hasn't improved much since PES 2007, but thanks to a number of major changes in this year's game, PES could finally be back on winning form. We took a look at the game at the PES League European Finals to find out more.

Player likenesses are much improved this year, including realistic-looking facial features.

The first thing that grabbed our attention was how much effort Konami has put into the game engine this year. Players are instantly recognisable, which is a huge improvement on PES 2009, where some players didn't look anything like their real-world counterparts. Not only do the animations look more fluid, but replays and close-ups reveal an impressive amount of detail, with such minute details as arm hair and sweat revealed when viewed closely. Despite improved models, though, characters could do with more animated facial expressions, and they had a tendency to look a little bit dead-eyed in replays.

The more important thing to note about PES 2010 is the gameplay. The game is returning to its simulation roots this year, and from our time with the game, it felt easier to create space and get the ball through poor defensive lines, which should offer more challenge when playing defensively. While we were previously told that Konami was not implementing 360-degree control this year, the developer has done a backflip and taken a leaf out of the FIFA 10 book to add the new analog control scheme. While seasoned fans may opt to stick to the tried-and-tested D pad option, we felt that 360-degree control was marginally more responsive and well worth consideration as a primary control scheme.

Off the pitch, the big feature this year is the implementation of a new tactics system, which lets you adjust attacking and defending strategies on the fly with 100 different levels of control. If your team is one point down in the closing stages of a match, for instance, you may find that maxing out your attacking tactics for one big push could make the difference between a draw and a loss.

We also got to see this year's Champions League mode, although it's unfortunately still missing some team licences, such as Arsenal. Despite qualifying for the competition, the team is again dubbed "North London" this year, and it wasn't playable in the mode. Notwithstanding some glaring omissions, Champions League looks like it will appeal to fans of the competition, which always offers its fair share of surprises.

PES's gameplay feels more free-flowing this year as it returns to its sim roots.

PES 2010 sees tweaks to other parts of the game too. Penalties return to a side-on view, rather than the front-on view seen in last year's game. We've also been told that the Master League mode has received some substantial changes, but we'll have to wait for final code before we can see them. Pro Evolution 2010 will be out on October 23 in Europe and November 3 in the US. For more PES goodness take a look at our previous coverage.

PES 2010 is very good game. It coming back against Fifa in the football game competition. PES 2010 innovated lot of thing and now the game is more pleasant. Fifa has a good gameplay but PEs is coming back with a nice gameplay on this one making it nearer to the reality. 6.5 I think it should get a least an 8

I've always been a PES player rather than FIFA but it looks like EA finally caught up and surpassed Konami last year. I think my friends and I are to stubborn and loyal to be switching just yet though.

Ive played both PES 2010 (demo) and FIFA. FIFA 09 was awesome, even on PC it was awesome. However PES just feels right and looks like its at least trying to play out a real game of football. Not just a controller grudge match. The goalie in FIFA just saves it whenver it wants to , unless you put it in the exact same spot every single time for a guarenteed every time goal in FIFA. Pro evo you cant rely on that bevause the goalie more often than not wont save it out of no where, and thats a good thing. Because it creates a mor erealistic game of football where ALL the players are important not just the goalie. In Fifa its ALL about the goalie. And although the goalie plays a huge part its not everything in football. Goalies can be beaten in MANY ways not just 1. In FIFA do th sam eshot you have a guarenteed goal. In real life thats just not how it works. 1 on 1 also goalie has NO chance in real life unless the player misses.

I have both FIFA10 and PES 2010 and it's no contest for me..PES all the way! Graphics are really good but the gameplay is what makes it..far superior to FIFA in my opinion.

There was a guy saying fifa is gameplay PES is graph (now)...well I want u to know that PES was always a gameplay and FIFA graph and now PES will have both GRAPH and GAMEPLAY...not the way you say it. PES IS football. IF u compare PES and FIFA its like comparing REAL football and a game with some robots playing a game with robot ball and two geals on some planet other than earth. Noone can give suck complete awckward passes or shoot moonsalto hit from ANY possition by a button press even if a ball is somewhere on the ground lol. Thats how stupid FIFA looks like compared to PES.

I bought FIFA10 but not happy with it this year. I think this is due the big ads i read and heard about it...i agree with some of you when decided to wait till PES is out and compair... I have posted in some forums that i will be back to PES again... when i used to buy both of them but not last year. in 2009 was the only year when i didn't buy PES...but not this year. i think it will be great and if not.... then I'll say good buy konami...forever..

@Vrasidastd Who told you Fifa is more easy, habe you tried playing online?,even if you are better than your opponent, its not as good as scoring 20-0.I am no fan boy and i havent purchased fifa10 yet cause i wna see both of em and see which is the better deal before i buy any soccer game

vrasidastd
vrasidastd

Just because Fifa 10 is more easy and more automatic doesn't mean it's better. Pes10 its more realistic with those mistakes, cause not every pass or control is perfect by every player, it would simply look stupid if a defender has the same pass or control as Mesi think about it

Why cant EA and Konami team up and make us the best football game or cant Sony sponsor any company to make a PS3 exclusive football game so we can see something more next gen football

PES is the new Fifa, and Fifa is the new PES. Pro just seems to want to get people playing it again with slick graphics, while Fifa is all about the gameplay. Ball control on PES 10 is horrible; unlike Fifa whcih offers a great variation of different ways of controlling the ball and beating opposition players.

Pro Ev is a great game and I enjoyed it on the PS2 up until pro 2008, which was the last one I purchased. Why did they remove the manual player selection and force you to use semi auto? That has ruined the game in my opinion and until they sort that out I will not buy any more Pro Ev games.

FIFA 10 is a crap. I've played the game and found the gameplay nowhere near being realistic. While crossing the ball hangs in the air for far too long. I loved PES 10 demo. Can't wait to play the game. The delay in its release is killing me.

wmspoccha

360 degree control? i don't think FIFA10 use that system, it still feels very much 9-ways control. the only think that's 360 about FIFA10 is passing. how in the hell a player can pass to his teammate by doing 180-degree turn? it's unlogic rite. the goalkeeper looks more & more stupid every year. the gameplay is also rubbish, how can teams like manchester united, liverpool, chelsea be in the bottom 10? and what are teams like sunderland, hull city, west ham doing at the top? come on FIFA, there are toooooo much weaknesses in the game that need to be fix. it really need a major overhaul about its weaknesses. PES series are way better in a lot ways, sorry FIFA.

the gameplay is not the same as 2009. i've played the demo (pc) and it's nothing like the last one. It plays a lot slower, more like real football. none of this running up the pitch and taking on 4 players and scoring a goal crap that was in the last game (although fun was not at all realistic.) This is very much a game of build up play and picking out the right pass. back to the sim roots, thank god!! I don't nkow what fifa 10 is like on the consoles, although i've heard it's supposed to be great, the pc demo version was terrible. So it will be pes 2010 for me all the way this year

ernis0916

if gameplay will be the same as it was in pes 2009 there's no point to get it. The gameplay should be more realistic

It's still PES for me over FIFA. Tried both demos and PES wins hands down, I'm glad PES has returned to it's simulation roots, cos for the past few years it has been unrealistic. I was a big FIFA fan from the beginning til PES 3 came out, since then I have always been with PES. @ quanggamespot yes very true you don't get that thrilling feeling when you score in FIFA compared to PES.

Got Fifa 09 this year, hated it, played the demo for Fifa 2010 hated it......goes without saying I'm going back to the infinitely more fun Pro Evo!

what version did you guys play?? the Demo on PSN? I am quite sure the penalties are from the front-on view in the complete version as seen on WENB and PesFan. You know, the way they usually always are. Wow!! Gamespot!!

always sad about PES last few year, but cannot stop playing it, many times try to play FIFA but never get the soccer feeling that PES gave me. it is not the gameplay, not the graphics, not the license, PES is soccer 'feeling', and FIFA is a soccer 'game'.

I agree with dissa84. Exactly what I feel about PES and FIFA as of now.

I've always been a PES fan, never been tempted by the bright lights of FIFA and the obvious investment in licences etc...until FIFA 09. Last year PES was terrible in comparison and FIFA had improved to such an extent, the whole package was a lot slicker, gameplay included (which I never thought I'd say!). I'd like for PES to narrow the gap, which they have clearly done this year having played the demo. But its still nothing on FIFA10 im afraid. Keep trying Konami, but for now FIFA10 rules the roost.

For the PC this season PES is clearly the better purchase... The Fifa pc demo is horrid in comparison.

Despite of what any critic or non-critic say, I won't change PES for Fifa.

the only problem with fifa is that one of the game modes isn't available. I have tried to access Live Season since release and keep getting told that it is unavailable, at least with pro, I shouldn't get that problem. Bring on pro and hopefully the reviews that will be available from tomorrow on pesfans.com will prove pro is back on top

Shooting and Crossing in FIFA feels so unrealistic. Every time you cross it bends soooo much, even with a Defender. It is super easy to curl when you shoot, because you just hold RT/R2. The general gameplay also feels really slow. Thats why I prefer PES, although FIFA has way better game modes.

lanks3000
lanks3000

played the demo and although PES has improved its got alot of catching up to do on FIFA. Converted to FIFA last year and its just got better with FIFA10. PES is just too easy and players feel very clunky. FIFA has great tactical options and more fluid gameplay.

in regard to what football really is, fifa isnt anywhere near the standard pes has created.cmon if you have a slight knowledge of football,or you ever played some for real you know what im talking about.the difference stands at a very low level, and isnt really easy to explain.those who made pes know football way much more that those who made fifa.and were talking about japanese and north americans, surely not places where a big tradition of football exists.as 4me,this year, like the last 11 years, pes all the way.btw i live in europe and played football at agonistic level for some 10 years,i think i know the game better than both many yanks and japs
