Pokemon Go Could Be Amazing On Hololens

PokeLens shows what augmented reality Pokemon battles could really look like.

A fan-made Pokemon RPG battle system for Hololens proves that augmented reality pokebattles can be more complex and interesting than those found in Pokemon Go.

The video shows a head-tracked augmented reality Pokemon battle system called PokeLens, which tracks user hand-gestures to take inputs. Pokemon appear in the environment around the wearer, and battle it out in a fashion akin that of classic Pokemon games in the series, with special attacks, quick attacks, and Pokeball capturing.

Now Playing: Why Pokemon Go Doesn't Live up to the Legacy of Pokemon

Creator @kennywdev has been working on Pokemon-related VR experiences for a while now, including a plexiglass prism that allowed for image tracking and the projection of rudimentary 3D Pokemon scenes.

This isn’t the first Pokemon-related Hololens project we’ve seen, a company called CapitolaVR released an aspirational concept video back in July.

PokeLens is an unofficial fan project for the moment, but who knows? We can only hope the future of AR gaming will allow Pokemon fans to scratch beneath the superficial combat system found in Niantic Labs' popular mobile juggernaut, at least until we hear more about the recently teased Battle Mode.
