Pitchford 'really excited' about PS4

Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford says he "always loves more power" for a new console, also excited by platforms he can't yet talk about.

BOSTON--Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford is "really excited" about the PlayStation 4. Speaking during a panel at PAX East, the industry veteran not only stated his optimism for the new platform, but also praised Sony for inviting developers to the table when it came to designing the console itself.

"I'm really excited about it. I always love more power," Pitchford said of the PlayStation 4. "Since Sony's announced the PlayStation 4, I can probably at least say that it was really exciting for them to invite us to the process. That was new for Sony from our seat anyway."

Gearbox Software is one of the hundreds of developers working on PS4 titles.

"They really invited us into the process and I can say definitively that they listened to what we had to say and made the platform better because they listened to the developers," he added.

Regarding "other," not-yet-announced platforms, Pitchford said he's excited, though he's not yet allowed to share any details.

"I'm excited about some other things, too, that I can't talk about yet [laughs]," Pitchford said.

Microsoft is rumored to announce the Xbox 720 during a one-off media event in April. The PS4 is due out sometime this holiday season.

So basically the 'unannounced' platform he's excited about is the next xbox. It doesn't sound like he's particularly excited for any one platform then... just happy to be moving into next gen. Unfortunately, Gearbox has never made a game that I am excited about... so I don't really care.

Randy Pitchford is an absolute tool.  Funny this guy is excited about PS4 when he can't even make a compelling game on the PS3.......well actually, he CAN make a PS3 game, but make it look like a PS2 game.

Randy Pitchford. You lied to me. Not going to listen you.....Gearbox = Think Twice before you buy - and never pre order a Gearbox game.

Sorry to post such a harsh comment - but I am a man the pre ordered Aliens Colonial Marines.....

Is there anything Randy Pitchford isn't "really excited" about?

I think this guy gets excited about taking out the trash.

Because Randy mentioned it, I doubt PS4 will be any good at all.

I'm honestly surprised Gearbox is still going after 2 badly received games (Duke & ACM)

I guess it was the success of the Borderlands franchise that's keeping them going but they desperately need a really good new IP (how can you get an IP like aliens so wrong?)

I'd be a bit worried if I was working at Gearbox right about now.

Randy Pitchford is an insult to the gaming industry. I know of no better con artist than the man who was "excited" about Duke Nukem and Aliens Colonial Marines.

I'm beginning to questions Gamespot's credibility for interviewing folks like Randy , who clearly do more to harm the industry than help it.

He's got a nerve to be "excited" about anything so close to the Aliens CM clusterf^ck. He's kissing Sony arse, that is all.

Pitchford is someone who is always excited and optimistic about everything. He showed glowing optimism for Duke Nukem Forever and Aliens: CM  as well, and look how that turned out. Pitchford is a PR guy. Nothing more.

Randy was also excited about the WiiU - just not excited enough to actually make games for it apparently.

Maybe since he is so excited about the PS4 maybe just maybe we can have the Aliens: Colonial Marines game the he promised us. That last game should have been called Aliens. Crappy Marines.

I think the fact that Sony is really willing to work with these developers in such a way should excite all gamers from any background. (e.g. Hardcore, casual, etc.) All of these developers/publishers have a dedicated team working on the next gen as a result, which can only mean great games right at launch. No more 3 years until developers learn how to fully utilize a systems capabilities. The only mistake they could make is buy pricing the thing over $450.  If they really want to do it right they will retail this thing at $399 and drop the PS3 to $199 on the same day.

I'm not really excited by next-gen mainly because devs have stopped innovating. What they need to realize is that the majority of console gamers aren't power gamers and that's how it's always been. They don't visit sites like Gamespot (back in the day it was EGM because for a while their review crew format was superior to most). These people don't get excited for hardware and NEVER will. They will get excited not even by this mystical "software" thing or graphics, but purely by experiences. Whether that's seeing 3D look beautiful and magical for the first time like Mario 64, Madden looking good enough and not pixelated enough to really act like you're playing a real football game, having a huge open world like GTA 3+. Motion gaming. Even HD gaming was a big selling point even though I wasn't excited at first. I remember seeing Gears of War of HDNet or whatever it was and thinking it looked amazing and offered cinematic experiences in games that could impress most anybody. This next-gen doesn't have a hook yet, but who knows, they may find one.

That said. I don't like Gearbox and doubt they would know how to push the hardware. Maybe if they released a free update to ACM that actually looks like the early footage following in CDProjekt's footsteps.

paid online like Xbox live and a continuing DLC trend

these things will make/break my decision to get a PS4

i will not be an early adopter, that's for sure

Hes excited for PS4 !! Now he can use PS3 graphics for the next Alien game or ACM itself. And then use PS4 graphics for the Non playable demo at E3 for the next aliens game.

"I'm really excited about it. I always love more power,"

I don't get why a company that doesn't really make visually appealing games to begin with would strive for more system power.

It seems Randy/Gearbox still utilize the Unreal Engine, which today make their games feel really outdated. On consoles, their games aren't graphically impressive and STILL have god awful frame-rate. Don't blame it on the console, Gearbox just need to learn how to utilize memory a lot better.

All this ragging on DNF, but Duke actually had better gameplay and AI than Colonial Marines.

ACM was a completely unpolished mess with XBox1 graphics, AI from 1993, and ZERO fun factor.  Compared to this complete mess, DNF was amazing.  At least it had Duke's humor in it, and decent gunplay.

I admit I gave Duke an 8.5, and I stick with it.  The game was 13 years in development, so I treat it like a 1998-2000 game as far as gameplay.    ACM really did deserve a 4.5/10.  Mainly because the e3 2012 demo made the game look awsome.  WTF happened to THAT VERSION?

@wwlettsome

I think he is starting to become the next Peter Molyneux who basically lies how excellent the video games he develops with other developers, but they end up being not as excellent as he says.

interrasteral7

@ascrewva

Peter Molyneux has lied more video games about how each video game he worked on with other developers was going to be better than what an amount of people thought when it was not as great as he said. I still do not believe people call him one of the best video game creators when he was just as more of a con artist than Randy Pitchford.

Similar thing with Peter Molyneux of saying how excellent the video games he has develop with other developers when they end up being not as excellent as he said.

@Incubus420 Ehh, no, coz the devs have been pushing Sony hard to make 2nd hand games unplayable on PS4. The Sony Press conference was really suspicious. When the rep speaking said there would be no disclock on PS4 he was interupted by another rep saying: "2nd hand games can be played, is that clear enough?"

No its not clear enough, why did you interupt the dude saying there would be no form of disclock. Makes me think you need to buy and enter a new product key for 2nd hand games to run on your console.

@Kryptonbornson Actually, I think the big selling point of the current generation of consoles was the Audio/Visuals that they could provide vs the last generation. While most common folk don't really care whats 'under the hood' as long as it looks and plays good, present day developers have done amazing things with the current dated hardware. Just think of what they might be able to do with a bit more CPU/GPU power!

I'm excited for all of us! If both the new Xbox AND PS4 are simply repackaged and less expensive PC hardware the development and porting of games across platforms will easier than it ever has been in the history of Video Gaming!  I'll likely get one or the other of the new consoles, will have to wait to see Microsofts product and the pricing/features to weigh in which one I'll make room for in my living room.

Kryptonbornson

@DrKill09 I only played the demo for DNF and I have to say I thought it was more fun than Borderlands, that's why I get confused at how much people pretend to like Bordlerlands, but hated DNF. I wasn't surprised at all as an individual that Aliens:CM sucked, I had always thought of Gearbox as a no talent developer. Bulletstorm really had that old school flavor mixed with new school that Duke Nukem Forever couldn't achieve though and it was much better for it.

Kryptonbornson
Kryptonbornson

@mbloof Maybe if it doesn't get more expensive than now. I was surprised to see girl gamers that didn't exist prior to World of Warcraft, Nintendo DS, and Wii going over to Xbox 360 even though the controllers were more complicated and there were no other gimmicks besides graphics. But I don't think the industry really knows anything about what girls and other casual gamers will be doing next gen, if they haven't moved onto iOS/Android games. After all, they didn't buy Wii U, the market might not be there anymore.

mbloof

@Kryptonbornson @mbloof Portable gaming devices have always been around, I don't see them displacing bigger screen entertainment. The real question is if parents will continue purchasing dedicated gaming devices for their kids or opt for a 'tablet' or more practical desktop or laptop. Given the cost of a 'gaming desktop', most cost effective laptops are won't play modern games AND there's an inbuilt desire to divide 'play' and 'school work' devices, I don't think there will be less market for consoles.
