Phantasy Star Online 2 delayed in North America

No specific reason given for delay; no new release window specified.

by

Gamers hoping to play an English version of Phantasy Star Online 2 will have to wait a little longer.

No English PSO2 for you (for now).

According to Sega (via Polygon), the upcoming free-to-play massively multiplayer online game will not be out in early 2013 as was previously announced. Its release window has been pushed back to an unconfirmed period.

Sega has not provided details on the reason for the delay at this point in time.

PSO2 was out in Japan in July 2012 for the PC. The game was ported onto the PS Vita in February of this year.

I bought a vita at release because I thought PSO 2 was gonna be released around the same time. Its been over a year alter and still zero data on the release, my bad. Stupid dusty vita and silly Sega.  I played the japanese version and its pretty cool. I'm really confused how they think this is gonna translate well to IOs, cuz i'm really doubting that.

Will there never be a Phantasy Star game like the classics? I do enjoy PSO, but not as much as I did Phantasy Star 4 ( 2 was good and 3 was a WTF moment the whole game )

Call it a hunch but I think they are planning this as a launch title for PS4.  Maybe that's why NA, EU launch are delayed.

I used to play this game on sega dream cast around 1999-2000..I had a 179 female caster (human) and a 162 hunter with a fully decked out spread needle and a 170 newman with already maxed out stats and all tech at level 30..I wonder if this game will be the same or similar and if it will come out for laptops..since this game went down to hackers in 2000-2001 and then x-box bought it but it wasn't as fun on x-box so i started playing WoW in 2006, but I would totally love to play this game again especially if it was mostly the same  and available for computers

Sega loves delaying things. And no, it has nothing to do with gambling. If people use "western" they should realize that includes half the world, not just a handful of countries.
Even more so because we're talking of NA. Unless NA suddenly means USA. I wouldn't doubt it anymore.

The delay is due to the micro-transactions. In the JP version, you buy 'Arcs Cash' then you draw a 'scratch card' and get random goodies. Its too close to gambling (which is either outlawed or restricted to person of the age of majority) for it to transition to western shores.  They have to implement a new monetization system before it will release here.

But I hope they keep the FUN point scratch cards.

I am always happy to wait for this game.

This brings me back.

PSO on Dreamcast was a magical experience.. until it was hacked to pieces.

Sega didn't know how to handle it. You'd pick up an awesome item dropped by another player and then have your account banned because the item was hacked.

Even worse was the hack that gave players the power to permanently delete other players characters.

It would take some convincing to get me to play PSO2 because even without the hacks I wouldn't play PSO today. The gameplay has aged badly. The music still gives me chills though.

Maybe they feel that the game won't do very well due to how well a generic military FPS rehash does and the mentality of many western gamers when it comes to a game like Phantasy Star compared to a rehash like COD.

Many publishers and developers are desperate to make the kind of profits that generic shooter rehashes make.

Has any game company sucked as much as Sega over the last decade, and survived?

Hey Sega, in the meantime make your PSP titles playable on the Vita and I might actually buy one.

@Scisor50 If you are from the US, all of America counts as the United States.

@TheRez Bull, mate. Several games, both online and offline, have gambling minigames in them with no problems, and even so, people are only required to be a certain age when it comes to winning/receiving real money.

Atzenkiller

@TheRez where did you get that from? mass effect 3 let's you buy card packs which unlock new weapons and other things with real money. same random system. i don't see the connection to gambling though

@Saketume You should really try PSO2 on the jp servers.  It is a much better experience and the gameplay has evolved.

@ItsEvolution I'd say yes, Sega has released a lot of decent games this past decade. You can start with Vanquish, Bayonetta and Total War. Unfortunately for them most of the games they make are underrated or just get over looked.

@slave1_basic the pso1 and pso 2 for dream cast were both..you could level in the easier offline or hop on a ship and look for an open game and join it..i had 7 toons over 150 4 over 160 and 2 over 170..I had 10 cards (each held 4 toons) and all of them were at 100 to 140 (that were,'t the 7 mains)

slave1_basic

@m4a5 @slave1_basic What I mean is a single player RPG, you know like Phantasy Star 5, so as to continue from where things left off back in the day of the Sega Genesis

Pierce_Sparrow
Pierce_Sparrow

@slave1_basic @m4a5 I would love to see this, but with the trend of JRPGs trying to now mimic western action rpgs, this is unlikely. But we fans can wish and pray, right?

m4a5
m4a5

@slave1_basic Hmmm... I don't think they will be heading back in that direction. This game is now defined as an action RPG (and I personally love it this way).
