Old Navy giving away New Super Mario Bros. U on Black Friday

Clothing retailer rewarding early shoppers with free copy of Nintendo's new Mario platformer with $40 purchase.

American clothing store Old Navy is not the retailer one might expect to hold a game-focused promotion, but that is indeed the case. The retailer has announced that it will give away copies of New Super Mario Bros. U to early shoppers on Black Friday (November 23).

The promotion, however, is not without its caveats and limitations. Those who wish to score a free copy of New Super Mario Bros. U will need to be at least 16 years old and near the front of the line at Old Navy prior to its opening at midnight on Friday, November 23.

Old Navy associates will hand out wristbands good for a copy of the game, starting at the front of the line, and quantities will be "extremely limited." Additionally, those who do receive a wristband will need to spend $40 or more at Old Navy to receive a copy of New Super Mario Bros. U.

New Super Mario Bros. U is one of the Wii U's 23 launch titles that will debut with the system when it arrives this weekend in North America.

That thumbnail will live on in GS infamy as the weirdest cropping ever.

I'd rather just buy the game myself. Never liked Old Navy's crappy clothes, so I certainly wouldn't wait on line on freakin' Black Friday to get the game and have to pay $40 for junky sweatshirts.

And why does everyone keep talking about the thumbnail? It's just....OOOOOHHHH, that's why...Yoshigasm

I swear it must be an inside joke with the GS crew to continue using the same suggestive picture of Toad and Yoshi for these articles.

Of all the obnoxious stores in the universe, it had to be Old Navy.

Last time I checked, "free" meant no money involved :V

Old Navy has had game focused tie-ins previously, so I'm not shocked that they've gotten on board with something like the Wii U.

Super late news, it's a good deal, but the quantities are going to be so limited and crowds huge, it's a gamble. I've known about this since last week.

It's a good deal for Wii-U owners, especially if they want to save a few bucks on Mario Wii-U.  I just don't see most gamers deciding to buy some old navy clothes while taking advantage of the promotion, but I could be wrong.

Lol! You KNOW they put the picture there a second time so we can laugh =)

Can you change the GS logo to that image? Because I REALLY love that picture, it made my day!

Never heard of that retailer, and it's weird that a clothing shop makes this kind of deal.

Anyway, about the picture, it's kind of an old picture, i wonder why is still being used.

 @XtC86 Yeah, they've put it up before and I was thinking the same thing. I wonder if it was intentional, if it wasn't, that's pretty bad.

 @cavs25 Actually they give away quite a few. I got a free Lego Rock Band 2 years ago.

I've had a pair of jeans last me for over 3 years, they're fine, just don't go in the clearance section :P

 @Psychikos What about "Buy one, get one free" sales? You are getting two for the price of one. In this case you aren't paying anything additional to get the game.

 @Ovirew You'd be surprised. Think about it. Even if you don't plan on getting a Wii U yet, you can still sell the game for around 40$ in the packaging if not more. Basically you can have free clothes from a decent clothing store.

 @Suikogaiden IGN is the place for people to act like 2 yo's. It's not because you don't like something that it's not good. Oh and btw, I hated the concept too before I shut my mouth and actually read reviews.

 @mlcarter815 I understand that, and this is just a personal gripe, mind you. I would rather they say "at no extra cost" , nitpicky yes, but more true to the deal, I think.

 @DrKill09  @zzamaro zz might be from another country or another part of the US, but Old Navy is basically an intermediate upscale clothing store, usually found in most US malls.  Personally, I'm happy with buying my clothes at Walmart, Target, Sears....places like that.  But a lot of people really like brand name stuff, and pay more for it.

abHS4L88

 @Ovirew

It's more like a budget intermediate, whereas Gap is more intermediate upscale and Banana Republic is upscale (all the same company).

 @Ovirew  @DrKill09  @zzamaro

IDK about upscale. It's like a low scale place. there clothes are cheap but of good quality. But I do recall old navy doing something similar a few years ago. I can't recall what but I do rmbr they did
