Official Word on Quake III

Activision claims id's Quake III as its own.

In a none-too-surprising announcement, id Software issued the official word that Activision has received the nod to distribute Quake III.

Activision is the distributor for id's current high-profile project, Quake II, which id states has shipped more than 850,000 units since its launch last December. Id expects that number to rise over the one million mark by this summer.

Id is working on a new graphics engine for Quake III that, it says, "is optimized to take advantage of the latest advancements in high-end, 3-D graphics acceleration." Quake III is intended to be a 3D hardware-only game.
