Nordic Games Holding acquires JoWood and The Adventure Company

Publishers of Gothic and Spellforce saved from insolvency; subsidiary company that publishes adventure game also in the mix.

Earlier this year, developer JoWood Entertainment declared insolvency after being unable to acquire funding to stay functional. Nordic Games Publishing recently announced on its site that it has acquired JoWood together with its subsidiary company, The Adventure Company, thus saving the parent company from going under.

The Gothic series now has a new home under Nordic Games.

Nordic Games now has the publisher's brands and back catalog under its control. The publisher's future plans are to relaunch JoWood's back catalog and create new IPs in the process. The company mentioned that key focus brands include Spellforce, Painkiller, Arcania, The Guild, Panzer Elite, Legend of Kay, The Nations, Safecracker, and Neighbors From Hell "amongst others."

Nordic Games was established in 2008, with its headquarters located in Karlstad, Sweden. The company recently opened a new office in Vienna, Austria.

@Vepiion... Arx Fatalis is indeed a great game, but it was made by Arkane Studios. Jowood was just a (lousy) publisher for it. And after the horrendous Gothic: Arcania by Spellbound, the rights for future Gothic titles are back with Piranha Bytes.

@ Claus_duBois Yea that whole thing was a screwy situation. Its ok though. We know who the real creators are here and that is Piranha Bytes with the great Gothic game under a new IP while the fake is in disguise.

Guys, I think you're confused a bit. I thought JoWoods was the publisher that mucked up the Gothic series. Piranha Bytes was the company that developed the great Gothic series which was then mucked up in a conflict with JoWoods. The early Gothic games were great but suffered from poor marketing and distribution at the hands of JoWoods, at least in the US. So getting JoWood out of the picture is the good thing, not saving JoWood. That of course assumes Nordic is an improvement over JoWood. However it may make no difference since the real players behind Gothic,i.e. the developers, all moved on after the conflict and started the Risen series etc I think.

I love the gothic series, but I think Arcania Gothic 4 was terrible.... What was up with all the invisible walls and you would get caught up in the trees in the swamp. I was so disapointed in Gothic 4. I know they could do better than that. I think their motive was just graphics because Risen by Deep Silver released first and pretty much wanted to release Gothic 4 quickly. Risen was great for only its combat and and the story wasnt bad. as to Gothic 4, it was nothing more than eye candy and you need more than that... the combat was boring and the entire game was way too linear. If there was a Gothic 5 coming out while the new Risen 2 is coming out I'd buy Risen 2 first. And Risen 2: Dark Waters looks like its got a graphic boost. I'm very interested in it.

That's good, it means that the Gothic series still has a future even if it is...different. Thank you Nordic Games for saving JoWood.

Jowood does some good work

The last Gothic game is atrocious, they should not put Gothic name on it, just Arcania should be enough.

Hopefully they will now pay more attention to their games and make them better! I am a big fan of JoWood and a huge fan of the Gothic and Spellforce games! What I have to complain is that they should have sticked to the original story and unnamed hero in Gothic 4! That's the thing I hate about that game because after so many hours spent on that great games I wanted to see the story of the original hero continuing! The idea of replacing the original hero and making him the antagonist is one of the stupidest things I've seen!

do you think we might get that stargate game that JoWood was making now?

Awesome stuff. JoWood was a terrible company that, somewhat ironically, produced some decent stuff over here in Europe. Hopefully it will be under better management now.

This might be what is necessary to make these titles shine.
