No PS Vita price cut for North America

Sony president of Worldwide Studios says recent Japanese price cut will not carry over to Western markets; PS4 supports 4K, but games don't.

by

NEW YORK CITY--The PlayStation Vita will not get a price cut in North America anytime soon. Sony president of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida confirmed the news today during a roundtable session as part of the company's PlayStation 4 announcement.

The PS Vita recently received a price drop in Japan, but no such price reduction is coming to other markets, Yoshida said, noting exchange rates are one of the reasons.

Decisions about price drops are made on a region-by-region basis, he said.

In addition, Yoshida today confirmed that the PS4 will support 4K resolution output (for video recorded in the format), though games will not.

Yeah don't cut the price. The Vitas are just flying off the shelves. Oh wait...

There are more games out for the Vita in Japan than in the U.S., EU, and AUS. I'd assume Vita sales are much better in Japan because of it (someone correct me if I am wrong). If anything, these other regions needed that price cut. I hope Sony doesn't come to regret that decision. Since I own a Vita, I don't want it to fail. I'd like to see some more ORIGINAL (read: not port) games.

They're lying.  The Vita will have a sizable price cut at the same time the PS4 releases because of the multiscreen capabilities.

Count on it.

Vita has a lot of games like.

Assassins Creed.

(Capcom X Tekken and Ninja Gaiden 3) which you can buy for home console and play on a HD TV instead.

Call of Duty which sucks.

Uncharted Golden Abyss which is only six hours.

Killzone is being made by a third party company it will probably suck.

Seriously why is anyone boasting this console.

Ok don't cut Vita prices, it's worth every cent, but PLEASE, give us cheaper memory cards, they are ridiculously expensive.

Well, guess the wait for the Vita will be a bit longer...

handhelds are just becoming pointless, and irrelevant in the west. Especially since iOS games are a better replacement.

4k games is still a pointless performance hit at this point. Not to mention extremely few people actually have 4k-capable TVs.

No Price Cut, No buy, simple as that Sony, you have no games and an overpriced device... you gotta knock down one of those pillars before any sane person would even consider putting money into the vita

PS Vita's only chance is when PS4 comes out people may want to play there PS4 games on the PS Vita and use the Vita touch screen as a controller for PS4..

That is PS Vita's last chance to survive and become successful..

it will come eventually when people dont buy it

Yay!  Let's continue to not sell the system!  Whatever.  I got a PSP and enjoyed it some, but this Vita just doesn't really seem to be my thing.  Games are full console prices, and the system has horrendous battery life.  I'll probably wait to see how the system does in the next couple years (I got my PSP after it had been out a few years and went down in price) and probably get a future version of the system.

"Decisions about price drops are made on a region-by-region basis, he said." this is only thing that is a bit reassuring. as the sales continue to bomb, i am sure they'll consider price dropping it.

If they start discounting it in North America, consumers will get the impression it's a failed product.  This machine will be a big selling point for the PS4 which isn't even out yet so they can't damage it's perceived value.

On the other side of the coin - when the PS4 does come out, this will be 1.5 year old technology and consumers also don't like that.

No worries at all! I live in Japan. Just preordered my 20,000 yen hot shots golf 6 4gb memory card black ps vita bundle this morning. Region free. Already have ps plus, so 5 free games waiting for on feb 28th.

Sony: We don't want the Vita to succeed.

PlatinumPaladin

Am I surprised? No. Am I buying their excuse as to why this is Japan only? No.

They probably didn't want to drop the price of the VITA anywhere, but felt they NEEDED to do something to increase sales, so they drop the price in just one market as a start. And of course, they look after their home market first.

"PS Vita price cut for North America"? Ah, we don't need a price cut anyways, us "American's" are pretty well off, right? You have my support to give the price cut to other countries instead yeah? LOL!

Chip441
Chip441

Unbelievable!!

Give a very public price cut on a lagging system to small market and leave the rest of the world sitting waiting on a price cut. I would never drop price in Japan and not extend the cut across the board. They have just killed there sales as many of us including myself are waiting on a lower price to justify buying a system with a limited games. Just plain stupid...especially after announcing last Oct there would be a price break.

Sony execs continue to exhibit strategies and positions that doom Sony in not just the game space.

telaros

The heck is the point in even announcing the system supports 4k res if the games never will?! That's like buying a 2500 dollar gaming machine just to play Cave Story! (yeah... sue me, I love that game... I-I totally played Skyrim and stuff though at least once!)

But, seriously, what else is Sony going to add that won't support the slew of new 4k TV's coming out soon? They'll be pretty screwed if MS pulls off some 4K res games...

Not that I care since these paranoid companies are only releasing DRM controlled systems because EA and other corp game companies are bitching they aren't getting enough out of us gamers, even WITH the loads of dlc that's usually on the disc anyways just waiting for you to buy a code in most cases to let you play with them! *cough*CAPCOM*cough*

So, yeah, I'll check back on this console war in a few years when I can expect to see (should see) games worth investing my time in!

Further more, if games that can only be downloaded or played once on a system's account becomes a reality, snuffing out our legal right to sell our games, then I better see more COMPLETE experience in my bought games and not see even MORE DLC crap that was used solely as a means to deter pirates from getting all their game's experience at no charge.

they should atleast give the memory cards away

Here is your 500$ PS4, we are gonna keep offering the $250 standalone controller for it that has a second screen. Cause you know, Wii U does it so we gotta get some of that too.

There are way too many system out there now.  There is apple, android, wiiu, ps3, xbox 360, 3ds, ps vita, ouya, steambox, pc, etc.  I'd like to see some of these systems fail so that way developers came focus on making some quality games on two or three systems.  Having all these systems segments the industry in a way that is frustrating for the gamer.  I don't want to buy another system just for one fucking game.  Remember the snes, they had so many great games.  I'd like to see sony and ms do well with their new consoles as well as pc but the rest can leave especially apple and nintendo.

Just to throw my two cents in this...

For the record..i own a PSP and i think its the most unnecessarily hated gaming device out there. For J-rpgs both the DS and the PSP are goldmines in terms of the classics, and some of the action titles such as GOW and Siphon Filter...and a few others slighty edge out the PSP over the DS...although i will grant any DS supporter out there that it is by no means a clear knockout...

The VITA however...has been one of the most SPECTACULAR handheld failures i can remember. I initially was psyched to get the system for Persona 4 gold...but now..seeing how the game support for this is NONEXISTENT i dont think i can justify the purchase. i think i might just cop a copy of persona 4 for the PS2...

NO price cuts at this point in the game is just flat out either 1.) a MASSIVE attitude problem sony has with the american consumer 2.) a level of denial that is astronomical 3.) both.

3DS freaking KILLED this generation. A one sided bloody MURDER.

I am not in America, and I already own a Vita, so this doesn't affect me. But even so, I still say *booooo* to this. It's time to get some bums on seats for this device Sony, otherwise developers are just not going to care about it.

EDIT: or what Mega says below, at least make those memory cards affordable.

Megavideogamer
Megavideogamer

The Price of the PSvita is fair. That is something I have no issues with. Sony could however cut the price of the PSvita memory cards to match SD and SDHC memory card prices. 32GB costing $100.00 for the PSvita could be brought down to match the price of 32GB on SD card.

This would help Sony sell PSvita in North America.

Sony will regret not adding 4k resolution games in a few years.

NEW processor and format means can't play PS3, PS2 and PS1 on PS4 you will have to A) rebuy all the classic games again or B) you will have to purchase a monthly subscription so you can stream games for the PS4.

Thanatos2k

@Falru At least they're preparing for the future.  Do they really want to be caught 5 years down the road with a console that can't handle it?  Look how long this gen lasted.

@chingchow48
The Vita's price (since launch) is justified, but yeah, a price cut's better. If anything, you should complain about those proprietary memory cards. And while more of the mainstream games have yet to appear on the platform, it still have a decent game library as of this moment.

When did this "Vita has no games" argument started anyway?

Jedilink109
Jedilink109

@Sevenizz 3DS lowered prices 7 months after launch and now it's sold 31 million units.  Doesn't sound like a failure to me.

deathknightleo

@telaros u still need a 4k hd tv and most people can't even afford the tv to even play the 4k hd games on. sony pretty much like to just add things. and who knows most likely will play 4k hd movies. just not games

jazzlover511

@TheZeroPercent Agree. Memory card's price is insane. Sad but true, I really have a feeling Vita will be shut down for good soon, they can't compete with 3DS. I love my Vita but I think Vita won't last long

@moncealyo out of that there are only 3 real consoles wii u ps3 and 360. soon it with be ps4 wii u and whatever xbox calls it self

Drilbit777

@racerxgundam I hate to say this but the Vita has met its match. Nintendo is already dishing out so many killer apps for the 3DS (Fire Emblem, Pokemon X and Y, Legend Of Zelda Ocarina of TIme 3D, and many more). The Vita really needs to step up its game and deliver some killer 1st party games for it and actually have original developers make it instead of handing it down to someone else (Resistance Burning Skies was a disgrace) or else the Vita is done for. Well maybe Soul Sacrifice could save the Vita but its future isn't looking that great.

hector530
hector530

@moncealyo the ps4 would have to have a HD7990 to even try to run a 4k game. sure as hell wont run it with a 74XX-75XX it has

thechuck11
thechuck11

@moncealyo Do you have any idea how hard it is to run a game at that resolution? Even high end PC's can struggle with games at those resolutions, the PS4's hardware will be outdated by the time 4K becomes more standardized and won't be able to run games nicely at that high of a res

Komania
Komania

@megakick But if also means it's easier for developers. They wont charge you for what you already own, it just will be incompatible. They'll definitely be working on getting PS1 and PS2 PSN games working, though games for the third will have to be streamed.

Stop being so negative.

@tempura13

It started when the Vita had no games, and since it still doesn`t - it stuck.

Sevenizz

@Jedilink109 Nintendo wasn't in a position Sony is where it will be used for future hardware.  Nintendo pretty much had to drop the price because they priced it too high than what the consumer would spend.  Bad market research.

shadowhunter0

@jazzlover511 @TheZeroPercent actually it will last allot longer than what you think with the contectivity to the ps4 work that they are putting in also fyi the ps3 had a slow start has well and now look at it

blaze_boy30
blaze_boy30

@Sevenizz @Jedilink109 Really? I thought the 3DS got a price drop because there weren't any worthwhile games out so no one bought the system. The launch lineup was meh and the games that came out prior to the price cut were meh.

telaros
telaros

@shadowhunter0 @t Slow starts aren't very appealing for early adopters.I got burned pretty bad by PS3 and it's only been this past year we've even seen more diversity in games that are worth playing.

If it takes a system 3 years to settle from the hype and dish out some worthwhile games, how long is it going to take the PS4? Sadly, the Vita's main library consists of PS1 & PS2 games currently...

I own a 3DS and I'm still playing DS games on it, despite the fact it has a big variety of RPGs, action games, shooters.

The only thing that hurt Sony was their greed with Vita. They could of done the smart thing and added a fixed 64GB internal HDD. Instead Sony sought to milk consumers with a new unnecessary proprietary memory card knowing full well Micro-SD are not going anywhere anytime soon.

With the way economy is, I think devs feel safer with Nintendo as their system has always been a family trusted brand. It's easier to create for, cheaper, and that for the time being it hasn't been cracked yet.

PS Vita has the better screen, better graphics, but why bother making PS2 level games when you can make better games on PS3 or have more assurance in 3DS?

Sorry, long reply I know. It sucks investing in new systems only to see support near zero. I just hope Sony finds interesting ways to save the system in possibly the way Wii U let's you continue your game away from the TV.

I am looking forward to the new Y's game on Vita though, support that for sure!
