Nintendo unveils EU Q1 '09 lineup

The Big N reveals a slew of new releases, including Pikmin on February 6, Mario Power Tennis, and Madworld for March.

Although 2008 may be drawing to a close, the money machine that is Nintendo shows no sign of slowing down. The company has just announced its Q1 2009 lineup, with a new series of games called "New Play Control," a new DS walking game, and third-party games such as Madworld.

The New Play Control series will kick off with remakes of the GameCube classics Pikmin and Mario Power Tennis, complete with new 480p widescreen graphics and motion controls. Originally released on the GameCube in 2002, Pikmin will receive its long-awaited Wii follow-up on February 6. Nintendo will follow in March with Mario Power Tennis for the Wii; players can wave the Wii Remote to execute forehand and backhand shots as well as affecting topspin, slice spin, and special moves. And finally, Sega and PlatinumGames will be bringing chainsaw-armed combat and man-darts to the Wii in the same month with its highly anticipated Madworld. Other games on the list include House of the Dead, Castlevania Judgment, and PES 2009, although Rock Band 2 is notable by its absence.

Nintendo has also unveiled a new DS game called "Walk with me! Do you know your walking routine?" The game uses two pedometers to record your steps throughout the day, with a variety of built-in minigames to motivate your walking. With support for up to four players on one DS, each user can compare and compete with each others' walking activity, generate stats such as how much electrical energy your walking has generated, and share it via Wi-Fi to other Walk with Me users.

The wii is going to die in 09 unless the new mario and zelda game that everyones talking about comes out in 09 the wii is screwed. Hey Pikmin right!!! Nope.

hard to pick out any decent games in that list

Yawn what ever happened to innovation that nintendo was famed for? Pickmin will work with motion control (still the same though) & mario tennis is a wii sports re-skin. Come on the last game that made me stand up and take notice was, metroid prime & before that zelda & mario on the N64.

Got 5 games I wanted on that Wii list..which is kinda lame :P

@necronaux This is just the list for Q1. It would be pretty impossible for them to come out with a completely new / unannounced Metroid or Zelda in the next three months.

necronaux

No new Metroid or Zelda? What gives? Hope this isn't their full list, looks kinda lame (3rd party crap-ware, more petz titles, etc.).

I was looking forward to Mario Power Tennis for the Wii in the hopes I could use my CC or GC control. Guess I'll just pick up the GC version cheap instead.

Mario power tennis is awosome i'll play it tommorow

Nintendo is too busy counting their money to do the one thing all their loyal fans want from them, bring out good first party games.

Sega leading the way for the Wii, most of the rest is shovelware. DS has a better line-up with its versions of the new Puzzle Quest and de Blob.

St_muscat

IMO that list for Wii isn't to bad. Madworld, House of the Dead: Overkill, Sonic and the Black Knight (if reviews are alright), Pikmin port and Mario Tennis port isn't too bad for only a 3 month period. Note* I haven't played Pikmin or the GC Mario Tennis before though, so I might get both if I can pick them up cheap. But yeah come on people it's not that bad.

KhanhAgE

Pikmin? Nintendo might as well admit the obviously glaring similarities between the GameCube and the Wii. That the Wii is a GameCube with a new remote.

This article needs to be edited. The Pikmin game mentioned here is not a follow up game but a remake for the Wii.

CorruptGamerGX

@fbigent34 The list will grow at the end of Summer. Enjoy your faith in Nintendo until then. Your arguments are stupid and a waste of time. Mario Power Tennis= GC game Mario Power Tennis on Wii= GC game + Tacked-on controls Okami= PS2 Game Okami on Wii= PS2 game + Tacked-on controls Same name + Same game= lame on Wii for $35+

Yeah ctg, that little Halo 3 avatar there shows that you enjoy mediocrity a little too much, therefore don't really have much of a valid opinion, now do you?

CorruptGamerGX - so i guess that is the same for gta4 far cry 2 halo 3 I have never said anything about EU your acting like this list wont grow or this only whats coming out. which its not true. they not going to stop you inelse i report you or someone else does plan and simple. dude just beacause the game has the same name dosent make it the same game.

CorruptGamerGX
CorruptGamerGX

@fbigent34 How do I know? Well for starters, one of the games is called Mario Power Tennis. Where have I heard that name before? Oh yeah, the sequel to Mario Tennis 64 for GAMECUBE, same thing with Pikmin. I could care less if this shovelware list is only for Europe at the moment. Are you suggesting that Europeans aren't important like the rest of the World? Believe me, North America and Japan are next. And lastly, GameSpot does not condone insults or swearing on this site otherwise they wouldn't have created the ToU in the first place. Do you lack brain cells or are you always this annoying with bad grammar?

ctg867 - so just beacause you dont like animal crossing makes other people sad they bought it? Prydes - lmao.... no than it be flooded with "more reash more reash more waggle crap".

I would say that Pikmin might of been a worthwhile title... if you had asked me before I found out there were straight up porting the original Gamecube game and tacking on motion control. You know, at the very least they're being honest about it. That's basically what Twilight Princess was, and Super Paper Mario was supposed to be on Gamecube, but those games were at least new titles. Animal Crossing on the other hand is a DS port of a Gamecube port of a Japanese N64 game from early 2001, which is just plain said. Seriously people, if you went out and bought Animal Crossing, you are a sad, sad little man (or woman). But really, I think it's really weak of them to literally port the original Pikmin and give it some waggle. They should be going the extra mile, giving you a proper sequel with all new content that's catered to the Wii, looks really good for a Wii game, and is in a $50 retail product that ends up being overall solid. Instead they just do a quick port. Well think of it this way: maybe Madworld will actually be a solid title and maybe it wont be more then a year between Brawl and another quality Wii title. There's a couple on Wii Ware that are cool, and there's a couple at retail there were decent, but nothing really worth it IMO. One of the reasons I doubt I'll ever buy a Wii...

fbigent34
fbigent34

CorruptGamerGX - have you played it no so how do you know it be the same game with tack on controls? and its not like other compiens never done that before. alot of people need to know this is not for all of Nintendo just for EU jeeze. gamespot will allow you insutling someone but your taking a risk to be ban so might as well go ahead if you want to insult me.

lamprey263

either there's going to be a dramatic shift toward 3rd party Wii games or there's going to be a lot of disappointed third party publishers

C'mon Nintendo, made some great games, i dont want to play this shovelware, like a lot of people said, MadWorld and Little King Story are the only ones to look forward.

few gems among shovelware and cheap cash ins, and most of them are by the same companies, they are repeat offenders of crapactularness

D3dr0_0

I have a Wii and out of these games coming out Mad World the only one for me to take some intrest. Nintendo needs to make some more 1st party games since they do well on the Wii, they need to add more to the Virtual Console to.

Momota77
Momota77

For those asking about The Conduit, a little research would let you know its coming Q2, not Q1. Other than Madworld, that line up is not very interesting. There might be other stuff I'm overlooking, so please lead me to them. My PS2 gets more attention than me Wii, that's not supposed to happen!

I own all systems including the wii. This is pathetic.

zaku101

Other than Little King's Story and Madworld, all those games are pretty much shovelware. Also ported GC games with Wii controls=super lame if at full retail price.

This is the way I read the list... shovelware, shovelware, kiddie game, kiddie game, shovelware, kiddie game, kiddie game, shovelware, shovelware, ETC, ETC...

LuLuClassiC

In all honesty, all that games and I still don't see the killer app. I suppose it doesn't really matter since Dragon Quest X has been announced for the Wii. Still, am I the only one who's not so impressed with the list?

@ snake3425: This is Europe's Q1 lineup. I doubt it'll be this early, especially in Europe.

For the New AAA titles (Zelda, Mario, Kid Icarus?), Nintendo will probably show them at E3, and they will arrive later in the year as per the usual with game releases. Nintendo doesn't show things too far ahead because companies like Sony love to steal (motion controls in the PS3 for example). I will guess that Punchout will arrive early 09 with other big game releases afterwards.
