Nintendo president: Wii U sales 'not bad'

Satoru Iwata remarks on US holiday sales of new console, says system is "selling steadily"; two-SKU launch has been "challenge."

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata told Reuters in a new interview that Wii U sales in the United States during the ever-important holiday period could not match the original Wii in 2006, but were "not bad."

"At the end of the Christmas season, it wasn't as though stores in the U.S. had no Wii U left in stock, as it was when Wii was first sold in that popular boom," Iwata said. "But sales are not bad, and I feel it's selling steadily."

Iwata did not divulge specific holiday season Wii U sales figures, nor did he provide a forecast for the console. Nintendo announced in October that it hoped to sell 5.5 million Wii U consoles by the end of March 2013.

The console went on sale in the United States November 18, selling more than 400,000 units during its first week, a period that included the Black Friday shopping bonanza. During the Wii U's Japanese launch weekend in December, more than 308,000 systems were sold in the region.

Iwata also remarked on Nintendo's first-ever two-SKU system launch, saying the 32GB $350 Wii U Deluxe model proved far more popular than the 8GB $300 version, which left significant stock on shelves and consumer headaches.

"It was the first time Nintendo released two models of the game console at the same time...and I believe there was a challenge with balancing this. Specifically, inventory levels for the premium, deluxe package was unbalanced as many people wanted that version and couldn't find it," Iwata said.

It is selling worse than the Dreamcast.  How is that not bad?

I got a super gaming PC, so of the Wii U, Durango and Orbis, the only one that could POSSIBLY offer something I can't already do better with my PC is the Wii U. So I bought one.

It's funny to listen to Nintendo maniacs list off reasons that they're dead in the water console is worthy of purchase. I guess this was the way I felt when Sega and dreamcast took a nosedive. I was a hardcore Sega fan and playing all through your childhhood cements loyalty. But finally you will have to look yourself in the mirror and question your sanity as I did.

If the Wii U had come out earlier in this console cycle, I think it would have been a great system for Nintendo. But they brought it out at the ass-end of this console generation. Most are preparing for the next-gen or are happy with their PS3s and 360s.

I knew selling two versions of the same console would be their demise...i didn't want the basic set either and neither did any of my friends...and the funny thing is they didn't think this would happen? this is why nintendo is doing so poorly because they don't understand marketing at all...they don't truly understand what consumers want...

thats if the wiiu is around in the next 4 years even the wii did not get alot of great 3rd party games and that was on a system that had way lower game budgets and they had nothing now why  would game teams not put games on the wii  but are going to put games on the wiiu    a system a hd system   where the average cost to develop a AAA game  is in the 10s of millions the wiiu is going to get vary waterd down ps4 and xbox 720 ports at best and whos going to want a wiiu in the next 4 years when the ps4 and xbox 720 do everything the wiiu cant i am sure the ps4 and xbxo 720 will have blu ray,  huge hard drives,  streaming cable tv,  and to top it off graphics nintendo fanboys can only dream of having on the wiiu

WiiU? More like Pee-Yew, because it STINKS!! HEYYOOO!!!

In all seriousness, I called this years ago when the Wii was selling like hot-cakes and Zenga was all the rage. That is, Wii was a one-time fad. It was going to lose steam eventually, and it did. You can't have the "gimmick 2" and expect to repeat the same success. The little kids and soccer moms are OVER it.

Success behind games is the same as it ever was--true gamers want cutting edge technology fueling excellent, innovative games and gameplay. Not gimmicks.

Hahahaha, this just shows how much market you've lost with the Wii, idiots.

WHERE'S YOUR CASUALS NOW?

I'm considering buying a Wii U once the price fits my "fitting values", i.e., maybe 4 years from now.

The 8 GB version is an absolute disgrace.  Who the hell wants a system with 3 GB of space? (That's how much you end up with after the mass updates you have to immediately install)

The 32 GB version isn't much better.  A modern console needs more space than that.

I like the choice of sales figures Gamespot prefers to use..

You can say 308,000 units in Japan for weekend launch...

Or 600,000 units sold in 2 weeks.

I love my next gen system, if Wii U is good now, with games like Zombie Wii U, NSMB U, imagine when Mario Kart, Metroid and others comes?

For a new console with no killer apps, its actually really good.

Despite all the criticism, looks like the Wii U is doing well. And it's pretty obvious with the increased posting activity of angry Nintendo haters.

Personally I'm loving my Wii U.. Played Mass Effect 3 and Batman:AC to death on PS3 but going back through them on Wii U is a dream! The controller is godly. The online is surprisingly alive as well, I thought my galaxy would be more asleep than at war but no! Lot's of nice, stable online play. So how about that Imperiacommando? I'm a living contradiction to your comment ;) Or maybe I'm just an exception, after all, they could cut down and port ME3 to Sega Saturn and i'd buy it lol

Nintendo made four mistakes with Wii U.

1. They called it Wii U lol. The Wii name is worthless now. It means nothing to the non-gamer any more, and it is resented by the core. They really should have developed a brand new console from the ground up.

2. They released it with a minigame compilation and NSMBWii but in HD. Hardly a way to excite the majority of gamers, both old and new. We all know that what it needed was one original, new, and exciting first party title. And Nintendo just didn't deliver that.

3. The price. It is hardly an impulse buy, and with the competitor's console's selling at considerably less, what did Nintendo expect?

4. It is unfinished. The TVii feature is nothing but a button to all but the states. The update was inconvenient. There are a number of bugs that need ironing out, e.g. frequent crashing, disconnecting from the internet, etc.

There is a future for this console, and I enjoy mine... it doesn't wow me, but it is fun. But Nintendo need to support the hell out of this console and get it up to where it needs to be in order to become a success. Because right now, they seem to be doing a half arsed job with it. And it is being reflected in their "ok" sales.

Not bad usually means not good, in fact it can mean far from good. There is no possible way they are satisfied with how it's selling or percieved by us consumers as a whole. I am one who won't trash it when it's only been out less than 2 months.

dreamfist11 and shadowhunter0 do you guys seriously have to post on every single Wii U article? Your trolling attempts are just plain visible and sad. You sit on any and every Wii U article and pump negative comment after negative comment. With all the commenting you do on this site when do you ever have time to play games? When do you even go to work? Unless its your job to troll that would explain everything and for some reason I don't seem to think that to be too far fetched.

Nintendo should've just released the WiiU in 32GB format first. Then later release the 8GB format for cheap. Dumb move which cost them sales. I'm a Nintendo fan at heart, but I saw this coming. Fix the 3rd party relationships or put a rush on the new super smash bros.

chipwithdip
chipwithdip

Can't win 'em all I guess. I'm just hoping Nintendo can get their 3rd party relationships in check. Their weakest games are almost ALWAYS 3rd party, which is bad.

Still, it's not like sales started out like the PS3 or PS portable consoles. Once it gets some more hype titles (F-Zero (hoping to God), Metroid (hoping to Jesus), Super Smash (confirmed, so just waiting), Mario Kart (not confirmed, but the trend is one per console, so just waiting) and Legend of Zelda (ok, EREBODY'S hoping to God)), they'll push more units out.

Also, hoping a hater doesn't try to troll this comment...

One of my friends, a PS3 gamer, got himself a 360 for Christmas, I don't remember him once mentioning the WiiU.  And thats even though he can basically use mine whenever he wants.  The WiiU just doesn't appeal to a lot of people
