Nintendo hits two-year stock high with Animal Crossing success

Global success of Animal Crossing helps boost shares of Nintendo 3DS and Wii U to 14,050 yen.

by

Nintendo's share price has hit a two-year high, Bloomberg reports, with stock at the Japanese publisher jumping 4 per cent today.

Stock for Nintendo closed at ¥14,050 (approximately $141/£92) a share in the Tokyo stock exchange, the highest for the company since July 2011.

Analysts said that Animal Crossing: New Leaf helped contribute to Nintendo's fortunes, with the company further buoyed with speculation that China might soon lift its ban on handheld consoles.

Animal Crossing: New Leaf finished second in June's NPD charts, behind Sony's PlayStation 3 exclusive The Last of Us. The game was Nintendo's third-biggest 3DS launch in the US, behind Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land.

Buh... buh... Nintendo is failing, they must go third party in order to survive. *eye roll*

Sorry, I had to do it, because it was going to lead to that. Beside that, this is good news for them and they need it.

I'm pretty sure their Fire Emblem + Shin Megami Tensei IV = $30 credit on your account will continue the trend as well. At least for 3DS owners.

I have to say I'm pretty happy with Nintendo myself. Between me taking 40+ hours on Fire Emblem (and I didn't even finish all the stuff, just the story and such), SMT IV being really fun, and the My Nintendo rewards (which gave me a free game - only a $7 value, but still) I would have to say I'm looking forward to everything else they have up their sleeves.

For those that were around a few months ago they had buy one get one free for Mario 3D Land / Luigi's mansion (and some other games).

Seriously, if you wanted a 3DS and were holding out to see if FE or SMT IV were any good just get out there and get it. Great stuff all around.

Hey guys, So if anyone has played this on a XL system do the graphics hold up good or is the 3DS better?

Wii U sales up 175% 1 week after the Pikmin 3 release in Japan.  So far so good.

(Sorry, I have no time to comment on this article because I have SOOOOO many 3DS games to play! XD

Im glad to see a positive nintendo article. I did not realize how popular this series was.

I was a little late to the party for New Leaf, but I have to say that I love it and have a hard time putting it down. As a bonus, it's definitely keeping me from spending more money on other games right now, which is not necessarily a bad thing since we just build a house.

Well it is the best one since the original, it probably surpasses the original actually.

Glad to see it doing well.

This news is surprising to me, and I bought the game. Don't get me wrong. I love it. Its awesome. But I never would have imagined it would sell so many copies. =D

I never realized Animal Crossing was such a large IP. I personally can't fathom how such a boring and pointless game could bring up their stock so much, but hey clearly I just don't get what Animal Crossing is all about anymore.

Fact: A spinoff of the series, Hannibal Crossing, was due out in 2014, but had to be scrapped when testers reacted poorly to all the cannibalism. Nolan North was slated to voice Hannibal.

@dre256x

WAY too soon. The DS was a monster and the 3DS wasn't even revealed until 6 years later. The 3DS came out in 2011 so expect its successor to be revealed probably in 2016/17 since the system is showing no signs of slowing down.

@jflkdjs 3DS XL is a fine gaming machine. Pixels per inch are nowhere near close to what you'd get on a phone and the whole system is held together by somewhat thin plastic. If you can deal with the fact that the XL not a premium product it's fine. Most people seem to agree that the larger screens are worth the lower PPI. The viewing angle for 3D is larger too.

@chipwithdip When things are wrong, people get up and take action and when things are right, people sit back and relax. This is something that is right with the world so the comments section is relaxed, laid back and (almost) troll free...

@HonorOfGod That sounds REALLY pretentious and snotty. How would ANY company go about finding what games people want, how much of them they want, and what to put in the game that people would want? I always hated when people say "Give us what we want" because it sounds like there was fair warning as to what was desired, when in *most* cases, companies just do their jobs making games and hope that we as gamers wanted it to begin with. I'd opt for "Give us what we'd like" instead. Far more accurate in accordance to how the whole thing works.

@Takeno456 Well, kind of. They're still sitting on billions of dollars of reserved money. That and the 3DS has picked up some extreme speed as of late. >_>

I'm glad the Wii U is finding some success with Pikmin though.

@blackothh it's their most succesful post-2000 IP(excluding the Wii series).

plus it's addictive as all hell.

@mr_squibble

I'd rather have games that'll eat up a lot of playtime than multiple games that I can breeze through in less than a week so that's something I definitely take into consideration when purchasing games, how long term it'll be (even if the initial campaign is short, if the gameplay is fun enough, making me want to go back and play it over again).

@dariusq

The original sold around 2.3m, City Folk sold 3.22m and Wild World sold over 10m so yeah, it's a pretty big deal.

@voljin1987 @raahsnavj I think Sonic: Lost World might do well on this system too. It's pretty much like a hybrid between Colors and that canceled 3D Sonic game.

@Tauu But how well do the graphics hold on the XL compared to the 3DS. I'm talking about the newer games that are coming out, like Animal Crossing!

@chipwithdip

Plus I noticed that whenever the community says "This is what we want, give it to us now!" then said game comes out, they largely ignore it and continue to eat up the games they claim they hate and won't support.

@dariusq @MapRef41N93W Well I honestly found New Leaf to be quite boring. I only bought it out of nostalgia really (I remembered loving the original on the Gamecube when I was 10), but was really disappointed in how little there was to actually do in the game. I played it for about a week and then just decided to return it to Gamestop.

@jflkdjs @Tauu I've owned a 3DS and now own an XL and the only game I've played on both of them with Kid Icarus: Uprising and that game looked fantastic on both. I didn't see any points where having a bigger screen did make it look noticeably worse. However I haven't played any 3DS games on the 3DS then switched to the XL for a in the moment comparison.

raahsnavj
raahsnavj

@jflkdjs @Tauu I don't have a 3DS for direct comparison right now, but I have a XL and I can barely stand to view my old DS Lite anymore because of how small the screen is. Totally worth it IMO - though I don't actually try to carry it with me all the time - Portable system for trips and such or before bedtime.

Fire Emblem and SMT IV both look great on my XL
