Nintendo Hits New Milestones With 1 Million Mario Kart US Sales, 40 Million 3DS Software Sales

Nintendo saw continued momentum in the July US NPD sales charts with big wins from both Mario Kart and the 3DS overall.

Ahead of the NPD sales data coming later today, Nintendo revealed some of the milestones for their top-performing games last month in the US.

Mario Kart 8 leads the fray with 1 million copies sold. Nintendo notes in a press release that it's "the second Wii U game to cross that milestone, along with New Super Mario Bros. U (1.69 million)." Nintendo reported late last month that global sales for Mario Kart 8 have already surpassed 2.82 million.

And that success has translated into momentum for the Wii U as well. Nintendo writes that, "Through the first seven months of 2014, total sales of Wii U hardware and software have increased by nearly 60 percent and more than 135 percent, respectively, over the same period in 2013."

We don't have specific hardware numbers on Nintendo's consoles, but Nintendo isn't shy about the 3DS software numbers. The portable platform is at 40 million games sold. Updated sales totals for games that have sold over 1 million copies according to Nintendo are:

Nintendo added, "Four of the 10 best-selling software SKUs for July are exclusive to the Nintendo 3DS," including:

  • Tomodachi Life at number 5 (and more than 85,000 games sold)
  • Pokemon Y at number 8
  • Pokemon X at number 9
  • Mario Kart 7 at number 10

Note that these titles won't necessarily show up in the overall NPD list coming out later today, since those numbers reflect total sales across every platform a game is available on. Nintendo's ranking breaks the numbers down to an individual SKU basis (meaning the game's release on a single platform).

With Super Smash Bros., The Legend of Zelda Hyrule Warriors, and a whole slate of Amiibo figurines still coming before the end of the year, it'll be exciting to see how much Nintendo grows after the rockiness of last year. But what are you most looking forward to from Nintendo? Let us know in the comments below.

Given that estimates put them at about on par with last year in terms of sales for the first four months, that would mean that May through July has been quite a busy period.  August will probably be a slow one  (honestly hasn't been a great month for anyone given that there are so few games), but starting September Nintendo has a nice spread of games throughout the fall and Holidays.  So going into the Holidays, things are looking up.  It's looking more and more likely Nintendo will hold on to second place for the remainder of the year.

So what we're saying is that every single person on Earth that owns a Wii U bought 2 copies?

Such a joke. It's the same game that it was on N64... same graphics too considering the Wii U uses the same hardware.

Well, Mario Kart helped, but didn't save the Wii U.  Time for the next game on the list to try and do it.

Could have seen it coming.  This poll of gamers shows why:

(Are you fuc.king kidding me Gamespot?  "Bea.ting" is a banned word now!?)

There's a rumour that Nintendo has a major release for every month of next year(including some remakes). This guy supposedly mentioned Devil's 3rd before its announcement so I wonder how it'll help the Wii U if it is true.

This is sad , this proves that if developers were releasing their milky franchises on wii u it would had been sold a lot, so nintendo should release those last games for wii u and announce next gen Wii , with current gen or better specs.

I find it odd people still aren't happy with the Wii U game library. Obviously not everyone will like it but one must acknowledge they are doing better. The Mario game franchise is as strong as ever. Yes it's the same thing but....Nintendo does that well. Keep in mind new games for the sake of new.

That ends up in failure.

There's a rumor going around that quality software titles can sell hardware...

This is awesome. Whenever a company has their back to the wall, they always seem to do great things. Just look at how many great titles came on the Gamecube. Sony did some of their greatest work while selling the PS3 at a loss. Even the Dreamcast did a lot of amazing stuff despite being out for only 2 years. Well and of course, we can't forget last year's 3DS lineup.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D: 1.39 million

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds: 1.09 million

Interesting that a remake of an old game beats an equally stellar brand new game in sales.

Congrats Nintendo! Just wait until Smash Bros. comes out. Smash Bros. Wii U plus 3DS sales > Wi U! lol jk.

Glad I chose Wii U over PS4.  Since I am mostly a PC gamer these days it was the best decision.  No one makes games like Nintendo.

@Edymnion Lol they're 1.2 billion people in India along... Wii U has sold 6.7 millions... U, U really made my day with that math

@simsumre That's why it sold so poorly compared to other MK games.  This is not exactly good news.

@Thanatos2k

Yes it is, I was having a convo with someone a while back and was wondering why my comments were "pending".

Anyways, at this point, the Wii U no longer needs "saving" it just needs more boosts. A system that needs saving is one where sales have been declining, but that's not the case with the Wii U as sales have been rising over the past year.

Doesn't matter what Nintendo does, those 3rd parties are going to screw them regardless.

Which is strange considering the PS4 has sold over 10m with a rather lackluster library.

@abHS4L88 @simsumre You're right, I'm going to go spend $350 right now to get a brand new N64 2, I mean Wii U, that includes a plastic steering wheel and Mario Kart. Can't wait to play more Marios!

@Thanatos2k

I honestly don't see how they "alienated core gamers" when they still put their best foot forward when it came to 1st party games. Maybe if you just listened to the media and assumed that everything on the Wii was either "casual family games" or shovelware, I can understand but I assume that the "core gamer" would actually do their research.

zeldafan195
zeldafan195

@so_hai The difference is that the Wii U at least has enough games that separate it and justify a purchase IMO.

Mario Kart, WW HD, Pikmin 3, and Mario 3D World are all outstanding games. They also have other good games that support it like NSMB U, Wonderful 101, Monster Hunter, and DK: Tropical Freeze. The only AAA exclusive on the PS4 i'd be interested in buying now is Infamous.

abHS4L88
abHS4L88

@so_hai

Not really, it's just been selling on hype, kind of like how the PS2 sold extremely well when it launched despite barely having any truly noteworthy games (well, hype and the cheapest DVD player around).

The Wii U's sales have improved a lot so people are taking notice of what it has to offer.

xOmniCloudx
xOmniCloudx

@HonorOfGod @abHS4L88 @so_hai It's not hype. It's Sony already showing last gen that they can push varied exclusives that people want combined with already having the 3rd party support as well as having the superior hardware and competitive pricing. Wii-U lags behind in those major areas that people buy consoles for even though it had a year headstart. Last gen did a lot for the positivity of PS4 and negativity of Wii-U.

zeldafan195
zeldafan195

@HonorOfGod @abHS4L88 @so_hai I'm a big Sony/Nintendo fan, but I really don't like it when systems like the PS4 sell without doing a darn thing.

I mean, they're basically being encouraged to make a few mediocre exclusives and remakes. Next years lineup is the lineup that deserves the sales. Not this year's lineup.

zeldafan195
zeldafan195

@abHS4L88 @Dissentioncc He seems very interested in Nintendo. I bet deep down he loves Nintendo, but is in denial. He feels like he'll be betraying his fanbase if he gets another console.

xOmniCloudx
xOmniCloudx

@zeldafan195 @so_hai The problem with those games is that in today's word, they don't reach to a wide demographic. They're exclusives that for the most part cater to the Nintendo crowd. In addition to that people are super heavy on third parties,,games Wii-U is lacking and people are aware isn't changing any time soon combined with them having the weakest specs for 1st and third party games. Not to mention the struggling online features and communities. Things that are highly important to many.

I plan to get Wii-U in the future but don't see it as worth its price atm and it isn't compelling enough to be my main soncol. The games I do want for it would last me maximum three months until it became mostly a dust collector and the friend circle is noticeably lower as well with its community. It can only ever be a companion console alongside my actual main one at this rate. If I had to only choose one, it wouldn't be the Wii-U gong off likely options of the future despite me still not being against the console. Some of which are already confirmed.

It's also worth noting that Wii-U is about to finish year 2 while PS4 and XB1 aren't even finished with year 1, a year that historically was never anywhere close to a new console's best while the closing of year 2 is often the start to a console finally being adjusted to he generation it is in. Although I can name of a plethora of people that still think the already released third parties on PS4 and XBL are more appealing than Nintendo 1st parties. The market has simply changed and I bet that 3 generations ago, Nintendo would be doing a lot better (still not dominating) if this exact same situation was happening.

@zeldafan195 @so_hai imagine that, it takes time to build up a catalogue of good games? who would have thought? Imagine what the PS4/xbox catalogue might be like when they are out the same amount of time as the Wii U?

abHS4L88
abHS4L88

@xOmniCloudx

That's still hype, buying a system based on promises and good rep is still buying into hype. I'm not saying the PS4 won't have a great library, I'm waiting for those titles that'll convince me to buy a PS4, but as of right now, the system's library isn't really all that great.

RobDev
RobDev

@zeldafan195 @HonorOfGod @abHS4L88 @so_hai so the Wii U is out how long now and is getting some quality games after a year or more of meh but the PS4/XBOX shouldn't have been released. Or is it just that they are following the same model of EVERY CONSOLE LAUNCH EVER?

abHS4L88
abHS4L88

@Thanatos2k

"neglecting core gamers early on in the Wii’s lifecycle" Meaning that only the first or so which was true, but afterwards, Nintendo started cranking out the games that the "core gamer" wanted.

Then again, if you're an example of a "core gamer" I can understand since you guys just LOVE to whine and b*tch over everything and act like petulant little brats if you don't get your way, treating these game companies like ex-girlfriends who cheated on you.

xOmniCloudx
xOmniCloudx

@abHS4L88 @xOmniCloudx There's a huge difference between baseless hype and having a history that supports people's beliefs to be excited. Already PS4 has announced several major brand new IPs to be released within the next year alongside some continuing franchises. The only thing is that none of them are out yet but people have proof they're coming.

zeldafan195
zeldafan195

@RobDev @zeldafan195 @HonorOfGod @abHS4L88 @so_hai I didn't get a Wii U till over a year after release. I waited till it had games.

And that's not how all consoles launch. That really only became a trend last gen. Before that consoles had good launches.

The Xbox launched with Halo:CE, which was one of the best games of that gen. The Gamecube had Monkey Ball, Luigi's Mansion, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron II, and Pikmin. The N64 had Pilotwings and Super Mario 64. IDK what the PS2 and PS1 launched with, but I know they were better than these launches.

abHS4L88
abHS4L88

@xOmniCloudx

That's still hype, buying something on the premise of "promises" is buying into hype. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with that (saying something is strange doesn't imply that it's wrong) but clearly Sony knew they could get people to buy their systems on hype so they marketed the crap out of the PS4 and put it at an attractive price point and it paid off.

If you don't think it's the same thing then tell me, how does one "hype up" something?
