New Wonder Woman Movie Image Introduces the Amazons

Wonder Woman is set for a 2017 release.

Wonder Woman may feature in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but she'll get her own starring role when Wonder Woman hits theatres in 2017. However, you won't have to wait that long to get a peek at the characters and setting, as the first official look at the movie has been released.

Entertainment Weekly released the picture in an exclusive feature on the Wonder Woman movie. It features Diana Prince (Wonder Woman); her mother, Hippolyta; and her two aunts, General Antiope and Lieutenant Menalippe. The four Amazonian women stand on the shores of the mythical island, Themyscira.

The story involves raising Diana, who's the only child on the island. Hippolyta wishes to keep her sheltered from the outside world, while Antiope wants to make sure she's prepared for it through training. No other story details were given, but it looks like Diana will eventually leave her home if set photos are to be believed.

In order to create the island of Themyscira, director Patty Jenkins filmed off the Italian coasts, as well as southern China. She also talked about the Amazonian aesthetic, in which she said "they shouldn't be dressed in armor like men."

"It should be different. It should be authentic and real--and appealing to women," she explained. "It's total wish-fulfillment. I, as a woman, want Wonder Woman to be hot as hell, fight badass, and look great at the same time--the same way men want Superman to have huge pecs and an impractically big body. That makes them feel like the hero they want to be. And my hero, in my head, has really long legs."
