New Ubisoft Sci-Fi Game Teased in Watch Dogs 2 Is Real - Report

The unannounced game, "Pioneer," is apparently being "retooled."

It was recently discovered that Watch Dogs 2 has a side-mission that involves hacking into Ubisoft's in-game San Francisco office to steal a trailer for a sci-fi video game. Now, Kotaku reports that this game is actually real, and is called Pioneer. The game might be facing a tough road ahead, however.

Two sources told Kotaku that the "space exploration game" Pioneer, which may only be a codename, was at one time planned to be announced in 2017. However, the game is now being "retooled," with a number of lead developers having been replaced in recent months, the source claimed. What effect this may have on when the game is announced or anything else remains to be seen.

The other source added that the decision to include the Easter egg in Watch Dogs 2 was made before Pioneer, the supposedly real game, went through those changes. It's not uncommon for games to change during development--these stories aren't always discussed publicly, however.

Asked to comment, a Ubisoft representative told GameSpot, "Ubisoft does not comment on rumors or speculation." We'll report back with more details on Pioneer and other Watch Dogs 2 Easter eggs as they show up.

Watch Dogs 2 launched today, November 15, for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The PC edition was delayed by two weeks and is now scheduled to come out on November 29.

In other news, Ubisoft has explained why Watch Dogs 2's seamless online multiplayer feature won't be available until later. For more on Watch Dogs 2, check out GameSpot's review in progress and what other critics are saying.
