New Star Trek Show Has Been Delayed

Fans of Star Trek will have to wait a little longer for the iconic sci-fi series to make its return to the small screen. It has been announced that the premiere of Star Trek: Discovery has been delayed by several months.

As Variety reports, the CBS show will now screen in May, moving back from its original January premiere date. A statement from producers Alex Kurtzman and Bryan Fuller states: "Bringing Star Trek back to television carries a responsibility and mission: to connect fans and newcomers alike to the series that has fed our imaginations since childhood.

"We aim to dream big and deliver, and that means making sure the demands of physical and post-production for a show that takes place entirely in space, and the need to meet an air date, don't result in compromised quality.

"Before heading into production, we evaluated these realities with our partners at CBS and they agreed: Star Trek deserves the very best, and these extra few months will help us achieve a vision we can all be proud of."

No further details of the show have changed. It will still comprise 13 episodes, and while the first episode will screen on the CBS network channel, all subsequent ones will appear on the company's All Access digital subscription service.

Netflix have the rights to the show outside of the US and Canada, and every episode will hit the streaming service within 24 hours of its US broadcast. In Canada, it will be screened on the streaming channel CraveTV.

Last month it was revealed that Discovery's lead character will be a lieutenant, as opposed to a captain as in previous Star Trek series. "The story that's fascinating for me now is not from the captain's perspective," Fuller said, via Polygon. "We've seen six series from the captain's point of view and we wanted to do something different."
