New Smash Bros. gets Super Mario Galaxy stage

Game director confirms stage based on platforming series for upcoming Wii U and 3DS fighting game will feature gravity pull effects.

The upcoming Super Smash Bros. game for Wii U and 3DS will feature an all-new stage based on the Super Mario Galaxy series, game director Masahiro Sakurai has confirmed.

Writing on Miiverse, Sakurai shared an image of the stage. He also explained that the level's unique gravity-based attributes will mandate the use of new fighting tactics.

"Pic of the day. A new stage, Mario Galaxy!! The pull of gravity emanates from the center of the planet, so this will require using brand-new tactics," Sakurai said.

The new Super Smash Bros. game for Wii U and 3DS will be released in 2014, though Nintendo has not announced a specific release date yet. Cross-platform play between the two versions is not supported.

On the subject of the Super Mario Galaxy series, Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto said this week that Nintendo has not ruled out returning to the platforming series.

Why is a single stage from a video game front page news, and yet word that Sony wants Shenmue and Yakuza on the PS4 isn't worthy of a single article?

Why we didn't get a Galaxy stage in Brawl is a mystery to me. I mean we had a Gen 4 Pokémon stage.  Oh well. Though I really hope this time we finally get a Bowser's castle or airship stage.

Cool idea! I hope that means the characters are balanced enough that this particular stage doesn't give anyone too big of an advantage/disadvantage.

I also RALLY hope they have another level creator.

@YouEnjoyMyFluff I'm pretty excited to see the Animal Crossing Kid in action. They always put in some kind of off-the-wall character, and with the popularity of AC, that's a great choice.

I'll still only use Link... but hey lol

@YouEnjoyMyFluff Yeah, I was disappointed to hear they added the Wii Fit trainer to the roster, that's gotta be the dumbest character to add to any fighting game.

If that is true it will come soon here. But I did not come to this article for you, I came because this stage looks awesome. The new smash looks better and better each day.

Brawl was originally supposed to come out around the same time they released galaxy so I doubt they would have had time to put that in. And the stage would not have had the same impact it will have now after we played galaxy.

@kbaily a Bowser Castle stage would be awesome

@zequex Same here. Hopefully with a little bit more options.  I'm not saying Minecraft or LBP levels of creativity (would take up too much disc space) but at least some more color plates and textures to choose from.

@WllDan7

Some new stages, Megman, and a couple of new characters that nobody wanted. It doesn't look much different to Brawl.

@kbaily @zequex As much as I enjoyed the one in Brawl, it was clumsy to use and limited in options. The possibility of building with the Gamepad plus the potential for larger and more complex stages gets me excited. :)

You're talking about "looks" with a fighting game. What differentiated each Smash from each other was the way it played, had NOTHING to do with the way it looked.

Also the game is probably still half a year off from release, obviously they're not going to reveal their biggest changes/additions right now.
