NCsoft scuttles Sony platform plans

South Korean publisher says that it is no longer working on any projects for PS3, PSP, reaffirms console MMOG intentions.

At the 2007 Electronic Entertainment Expo, massively multiplayer online game developer-publisher NCsoft announced it would be partnering with Sony Computer Entertainment on a number of PlayStation 3 and PSP online games. The announcement was somewhat head-scratching, considering Sony already has its own internal MMOG-oriented arm, Sony Online Entertainment.

That skepticism was warranted, since NCsoft and Sony's deal has apparently come to naught. Speaking to UK gaming site VG247, NCsoft Europe marketing director Veronique Lallier confirmed that the publisher has shelved plans to bring a game to Sony's platforms.

"We did an announcement a few years ago about signing a contract with Sony, and actually, to be honest, we didn't put anything into the market," said Lallier. "We are not working on anything at the moment. The project we were working on was casual gaming, actually; not something we continued, unfortunately." Lallier went on to tell VG247 that NCsoft hasn't abandoned plans to enter the console market, but the company has "nothing in the pipeline."

As part of the South Korean publisher's company-wide restructuring efforts in 2008, NCsoft opted to exit the casual-game business, where it had created such online titles as Dungeon Runners. At that time, NCsoft noted that it had scraped a number of unannounced projects that were still in the "prototype phases."
