Motion Sports Hands-On

We take Ubisoft's Kinect-powered sports collection for a spin.

As the name suggests, Motion Sports is a collection of sports games played with the Xbox 360's upcoming Kinect system. In our demo, only skiing and football were available, accessed from the opening menu grid by reaching out--with your hand tracked by the Kinect camera--and "touching" the block you want for a few seconds.

We played the skiing game, which is a timed downhill race against a ghost of your previous best time. You have to squat low and push off with your arms (as if you were holding ski poles) to pick up speed and then steer between the flags on either side of the track by leaning left and right. Oversteering (easily done) and slowing down draw sarcastic abuse from the game's unseen sports commentator, while a good performance wins you praise.

At the end of the race, Motion Sports recaps your ranked results accompanied by a series of freeze frames of you in action as captured by the Kinect camera. An image capture of your face is also deployed throughout the game, inserted onto posters and sports magazine covers to indicate your rising fame as a sports star.
