Mojang notches $80 million from Minecraft

Swedish company filings show popular sandbox construction game a big moneymaker in first 15 months; studio considering Minecraft TV show.

Minecraft may have been born of humble origins, but the game is proving lucrative for developer Mojang. New Swedish financial filings grabbed by the Financial Times show that Mojang's construction game has recorded $80 million (540 million Swedish krona) in revenue since October 2010.

Mojang has banked a healthy sum from Minecraft.

To date, Minecraft has seen in excess of 25 million downloads, with more than 5 million users purchasing the game. Such popularity has drawn the attention of Hollywood, Mojang chief executive Carl Manneh told the site.

"We've been approached by a number of high-profile Hollywood producers and asked to do TV shows," Manneh said. "We may do that. It's hard when you don't have any experience and someone comes to throw these ideas around. We have so much to focus on with just the game development and growing the business. But if the right idea comes along and the right people that we'd want to work with, we'd say why not?"

In addition, Manneh said Napster cofounder and former Facebook president Sean Parker took an interest in Mojang and Minecraft, taking the studio on a trip to London in his private jet in hopes of landing a business deal.

Mojang rejected Parker's offer, with Manneh commenting, "Generally we didn't want to raise capital at the time and we still don't."

Minecraft is continuing to expand. An Xbox Live Arcade version developed by 4J Studios is scheduled to debut on May 9. The game will launch without Kinect support, which will be added in via a postrelease patch.

What sucks is the Xbox360 version was completed as of March 17th and is ready for release but Microsoft thinks for some reason it's a better date for release on May 3rd. The thing that confuses me is it's Spring Break at the moment and I think now is a perfect release as most gamers just sit at home and play games during this period of time off from school.

I'll admit the game has great options for imagination. I haven't played it yet though...Only because I'm a sucker for unlockables in my games so i only play games with character/world progression and rewards for accomplishing something...so i play Terraria. It has the same things as minecraft(so i hear) but you can progress your way to battling giant robots and hellspawn.

That'sssssssss a nice 80 mil you've got there....SSSSSSSS..... BTW,kudos for rejecting the Facebook deal. The last thing this world needs is Minecraftville. It would take all the awesomeness out of Minecraft. @NeilCardiff Perhaps not as creative as these guys,no? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bTgmEB0IHcY I'll admit it's not for everyone, but there's certainly plenty of creativity to be had here. Skim through that vid and look at those guys' work,it's incredible.(And try to ignore the guy whose talking,he sort of sounds annoying.)

Minecraft has been an undeniable success story for modern gaming, despite seemingly having none of the aspects that would lead one to think it would do well, it has flown off the shelves regardless of any criticism that can be leveled at it. A big part of its success has been how accessible it is, pretty much anyone with a laptop made in the last 5 years can play it, it has extremely simple game mechanics and an actitive and diverse community. Minecraft has shown beyond all doubt that there is another way to do game development, and game mechanics, it may not be to everyones tastes, but no one can argue with its success. Hopefully we might see an increase in acceptance of new IP from the gaming community of a whole, which could reinvigorate what has become a slightly stagnate landscape in the last couple of years.

@Landsharkk Typical fanboy delusions. I have played it and after about 2 hours I was so utterly bored I gave up. I then tried again a couple of months later to see if I had missed anything and nope, still as boring as ever. Before you bang on about creativity, I find my creativity far too mature and refined to be able to find stimulation in stacking blocks and fighting mindless creatures.

@NeilCardiff This one is actually pretty innovative, in terms of creativity, freedom, and endless customization. I think those things are probably pretty fun for people. I haven't played it, but I watched my kids, and it looks very unique. I'm not gonna hate on something that is different, just because it is, well, different.

What a successful game that came out of nowhere! I can't get into it but both my kids love it. It seems to be very popular. It's good to see a small developer like this strike it big.

@CyhortI82 I was thinking more of a show that goes over news about the game and the latest mods/updates/content that come out for it. It could also show off a few of the more popular mods as well as newer ones.

@Neilcardiff Have you played minecraft? At first I didn't think it would be as good as some other games but I was completely proven wrong when I started playing

So.....some idiot actually wants to make a TV show about a game with no story where all you do is mine and build things? I'd love to say "Wow, what a horrible idea. That will fail horribly" but then I remember that the Jersey Shore hasn't been canceled yet and I wanna cry.

@NeilCardiff You mad bro? The game may not be for everyone, but its a very simple game, with lots to do and explore. For $20 (now, was 10 during beta), its among the top valued games. People can sink 100s of hours into the game if they wanted, and there's enough content to explore that it wouldn't be too repetitive. Personally to me, its a refreshing change of pace in the gaming industry to have a game like this. Definitely beats the lackluster of old refreshed games like CoD. Take your rant somewhere else, your argument is invalid calling people sheep for buying a new refreshing game that actually innovates. Not stale old milk like what the CoD franchise has become.

Oh Dayum!! Very nice little game they created, well worth the purchase. Not sure about the TV show to be honest, but nice to see them focusing on game development first. Hope that the success that minecraft gave them doesn't impact negatively on future projects. Good job mojang!

Well, at least now we know Notch has enough for Psychonauts 2.... I'm joking, just joking (maybe). That's awesome though. I've played Minecraft and it's interesting. Very happy they've been so successful.

A T.V show might be possible if it is animated or done in a similar CG style graphics. It would have to be something like Robot Chicken in a sense of a series of small episodes about funny mining quests or basically the same things you would watch on Youtube, either that or tell the story of Steve.

Amazing what you can accomplish with blocky graphics and no clear goals. Now, I have to get back to building an impossibly high wall out of obsidian.
