Miyamoto 'not actively thinking about retirement'

Zelda, Mario creator says he is not currently contemplating retirement, but is preparing Nintendo for future when he is not there.

The Legend of Zelda and Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto is "not actively thinking about retirement," but is preparing Nintendo for a future when he no longer works at the company.

"The one thing I want to say is I'm not actively thinking about retirement, but the thing is you look at my age and you have to naturally take into account that a time may come when I'm no longer there," Miyamoto told Games Industry International. "And particularly at my age now, it wouldn't be strange if I were to just one day fall over." [Laughs]

Though imminent retirement is off the table for now, the industry veteran explained that his mindset is instead, "How do you ensure that you've trained the young staff in a way that will allow things to continue?"

To achieve this, Miyamoto explained that on certain projects, he tells his team that he won't do any work on the game, thus pushing other developers to come into their own.

"Certainly, I think in the last few years we've done a really good job of raising up the younger designers and helping put them in a position that they'll be able to carry things on even if I end up not being there anymore," Miyamoto said.

Miyamoto explained in March that it would be "strange" not to think about retirement, considering he is turning 61 this year.

"This year I'm past 60; I'm going to be turning 61 this year," he said at the time. "So for me to not be thinking about retirement would be strange."

Well  Nintendo going to fall or just creating games for Nintendo

I've been playing his games since I was a kid and I think he's done enough. A few years ago it got out that he wanted to retire, to spend more time with his Grand Children, and Nintendo's stock took a hit. Nintendo quickly released a statement saying he had no plans to retire. Poor guy. He is old and he's done enough for the industry. Miyamoto deserves the right to retire and spend time with his grand children.

But he's old! If he doesn't retire he's breaking the rules! :P j/k

You know here's a guy who's spent his life doing what he loves, and it makes sense he wouldn't want to retire anytime soon if he's happy and sadly one day he'll be gone and then we'll see what happens.

It will be a really sad day when Mr. Miyamoto passes away. I don't know, just thinking about it makes me really sad, but I know it will eventually happen. I hope he can leave his legacy to other producers that will need to take up his place.

Why not?! he comes up with all sorts of good ideas when it applies gaming to his real life! How can I make a retirement game just might be the boost Mario needs to go away for a few months.

Cant believe that so many people are bashing at him, Miyamoto has been one of most influential (if not the most)  man in videogame history with his contributions and the whole industry will miss him.

Miyamoto is Nintendo. It will be a sad day for the industry when he retires.

Nintendo made the wrong call with the WII U but, I dont know how much he had to do with it. I just think there target market for the most part with there big titles is 16 and under. Its costly and out dated for what your getting in return. Not trolling its just my observation.

I think the new dev teams are mostly doing pretty well. Miyamoto is one of my role models, and frankly speaking if he chose to retire now I would fully support him. He deserves it. Either way, I hope he keeps doing what he wants to do.

He learned much from Gunpei Yokoi decades ago... now he's teaching new people based on his experience.

Nice to see that happening.

Nope, he's just fine making the same five games fifty times.  He hasn't had an original idea in 20 years.

Cant see Nintendo without this guy... probably vice versa too this guy will always live and breath Nintendo and most likely retire when he's dead.

The last time he was frank about the reasonable wish to retire Nintendo's stock price dropped and he had to issue a retraction of sorts within days of the original announcement. Now he has to say he's successfully carrying out a transition in such an indirect way just because of stupid reactionary speculators (one of the biggest human plagues ever to hit civilisation). The man invented most of the genres we have come to love, let him retire and smell the roses in peacefor crying out loud!

Nintendo already milks its games a lot.  At least with him on board they are good.  I am not looking forward to the day he no longer has any input on games.  Some of his input leads to questionable changes in games, like the last Paper Mario Sticker game, but for the most part I enjoy everything he works on.

@andrescapo_ Japanese people live really long, it's their diet and genetics. The oldest man in the world just died today and he was 116 and was Japanese. Japan also has 50,000+ Centenarians, so maybe he will live to be over 100, and still make games.

@Ejotei I think you'd be pretty damn accurate in saying he's probably the most influential man in videogame history.

@AMG Yes indeed. Sad for all people who like real games, not the crap we have been seeing late from most places, especially from the west.

@b74kd3th What kind of gamer insults Miyamoto? I don't even own a Wii U and I know that's sacred.

@b74kd3th I think you have the wrong idea about what he does in Nintendo.  And before you start calling someone a clown you should know that this man has done more for video games then anyone at sony or microsoft ever will.

@Meta-Gnostic It is Japan! It has probably been done already. There is a lab with Tubes full of future Miyamotos just waiting to be set into the world.

@DrKill09 Pikmin was released in 2001. Entirely his idea. He also closely supervised 3DS launch title Steel Diver, and is (or will be) personally developing some smaller games.

And same games aside, they're all very high quality games. He's got more innovation in his left toenail than all of EA and Activision combined!

@WantYouBad @andrescapo_ hope for you sake he doesn't could you imagine your great great grandparents trying to create a video game for you for one they would probably forget where they were at and start all over again

One of many who realizes this guys a joke. His reputation is built more off of nostalgia than any thing he has done the past 15 years or so

@b74kd3th But you forget, nostalgia is mankind's second greatest weakness. Second only to the neck.

@GSJones1994

If he doesn't think too highly of Miyamoto, then let him. Personally, I think Miyamoto ran out of steam at the dawn of the new millennium, 13 years ago, after that, he hasn't been making great games and stuck to the hardware side of the business. This allowed him to churn out the Wii, which also brings in the argument that he made gaming more gimicky and ridiculous. Regardless, he's a good man and has done many good things for this industry.

@b74kd3th Ah, another case of a Sony fanboy spewing lies around just to try and get a point across.

@chipwithdip @b74kd3th Actually sony does have their own studios, for example Santa Monica( God of War), SCEJ ( ICO, SOC), San Diego (MLB).

@b74kd3th Sony and Microsoft don't even make their own IPs, or their own games at all, you tool. Bash all you want, but Nintendo's the only one of the Big 3 that even care about gaming enough to make their own games. Their also the only ones that thrive solely on games.

Yet you're gonna pull out the "IPs" card. When's the last time Sony or Microsoft made their own game?

GSJones1994

@b74kd3th Same games over and over? you clearly know nothing about Miyamoto. Show me a game that looks like this please.
