Minecraft Players Can Change Their Usernames Soon

Don't like the in-game name you chose for Minecraft? Want to change it? If so, you're in luck, as developer Mojang has announced that Minecraft players will be able to change their usernames starting February 4.

As explained on Monjang's website, there is no fee associated with the much-requested name-change service. All you need to do is visit your Mojang account page and click the "change" link next to your name when it becomes available next month.

Players who don't want to amend their names don't need to worry about someone else copying their title, as Mojang says it will not allow duplicates. However, if a player changes their name, the former title will become available for anyone to register 37 days later.

Mojang also points out that you won't be able to change your name every day, as there is a 30-day waiting period between each amendment. In addition, the developer makes clear that banned players will stay banned, even if they change their names.

Usernames from the earlier, free version of Minecraft will be discontinued when the name-change service arrives in February. If you want to hang on your unpaid name, you can switch it over to a paid account.

Xbox company Microsoft acquired Minecraft and Mojang in September through a deal worth an estimated $2.5 billion. As part of the buyout, Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson left the company.
