Microsoft Issues Xbox Live "Service Alert" for Xbox 360 and Xbox One

Affected services include "accessing all game features" and capturing game videos.

Microsoft today issued a wide-ranging Xbox Live "service alert" for Xbox 360 and Xbox One. According to a post on the official Xbox Live Service Status page, the affected services on both platforms are extensive and affect the following:

  • Accessing all game features
  • Capturing game videos
  • Joining other Xbox Live members in online games
  • Managing friends lists and tracking what friends are doing
  • Posting game performance or viewing the performance of other Xbox Live members

In addition, Microsoft says there is an issue affecting the Xbox 360 right now where the console is "getting stuck on a black screen" when attempting to launch games or apps. "Hang in there!" Microsoft says, noting it is investigating all issues currently and will share an update regarding the status of these affected services as soon as they can.

"Thanks for your patience during this time," Microsoft said.

Are you experiencing any of the issues for Xbox 360 and Xbox One mentioned in this post? Let us know in the comments below!

Did this get fixed yet? Offline, trying to avoid this problem update. Can't seem to find out if another update was issued. Thanks.

I first noticed an issue on my xbox 360 but it was as simple as viewing youtube everything else works good.

On my Xbox One it keeps dropping my internet, for some reason it keeps telling me I'm offline. I took it off wifi and connected the ethernet cable hoping it would fix it. So far my only problem now with the ethernet cable is YOUTUBE. It just goes on a black loading screen and nothing happens.

I have just found a method that worked. Ture your xbox on put a game in and don't sign into your account let the game run when your offline first before you sign in. Once your in the menu of whatever game your playing, that's when you have to sign into your account. This method actually worked and I tried all the other ones, they don't work.

try:

settings > system > network settings > wired network > configure network > additional settings > "Restore to Factory Defaults"

reboot.

I literally have no idea what's up with my Xbox 360 but every time I try to play a game while I'm connected to Xbox live I get a black screen and I can't return to the dashboard.... This problem only happens when I'm connected to Xbox live, when I'm offline all my games work fine. Please let me know if anyone else is having this problem

Settings > System > Console Settings > Startup & Shutdown > Startup > Disc

then I restarted the console.

You can play a game. can't use apps, or browse internet or anything, but it's better than nothing.

Here I thought it was fixed cause I was playing earlier today but then got the black screen. I used the work around thanks to joshualhoover's suggestion.

Yea my 360 has been doing this since Thursday .. You try to load a game and it goes to a black screen and gets stuck . if you try to dashbored it freezes .. But I joined a friends poker game and that was the only time it worked . I can see all friends and activity .. My Netflix is the only app working right now .

Unplug your Ethernet cord.

Launch the game.

Then plug the Ethernet back in and sign into xbox live once the game is launched.

I played Halo 4 yesterday last night just fine. Should I turn my xbox 360 on again or will something happen.

johngoring

Both myself (Xbox Live Silver) and my son (Gold) are having this problem on our 360 games - but ONLY if we are logged into XBox Live when we (try to) launch the game. If we launch an original XBox game OR we don't sign in when we launch the game, it loads just fine. Once it starts to load we log in and the game plays just fine.
This all started on Wednesday around noon PDT.

Is this really a big issue? I've been online all day playing with various friends, downloading today's free games on both my Xboxes and haven't experienced a single hiccup and no ones mentioned one.

Let me guess - the Sony tr0lls blowlng this out of proportion?

If you got the black screen problem as soon as you get to the dashboard screen press the game thats on the disc right away and it work it worked for me anyway if not sorry for the false hope

anyone facing black screen when anything loads? Then if you hit home button on your controller it simply freezes and you have to reset the console? Anyone facing same issues?

@oldskool1988 at least it didnt take them like a month to fix it and ms's consoles have never been hacked even close to the level of "that" hack by anonymous years back. i actually had a ps3 back then and even my account information along with my credit card were compromised. can you say epic fail?

Yeh, that is exactly what happens to me! Except that I can't even play offline, *sigh*

@ksweeney550 Yes, that's the exact issue I started having. Decided I'll just have to stay off XBL for a while and hopefully Microsoft will give us some extra Gold time to compensate.

@joshua6775 I don't remember this happening on PSN for this extended period of time...ever. And yes, I'm aware of the problems 2 weeks ago - that was probs due to everyone trying to redeem Destiny codes, and yes I own Xbox 360 and PS3/PS4

@Evdne971 An easier method is to NOT sign in to Live when the XBox starts, then load your game. Once it starts loading, press the home button and log in. No need to unplug anything - just don't connect to Live and THEN launch a game. Do it the other way around.

@johngoring Thank you so much kind sir. Your solution worked like a charm. Now my wife and I can continue to play lego Harry Potter again. I usually go on IGN, but they haven't posted anything about this.

@Sevenizz The more likely scenario is that we who don't have problem with our 360 don't feel the need to comment as much as those who've got trouble.

Did you turn it on? Or your TV?

@aldosouza140 Yeah i have the same issues. I also loaded up my profile on my GF XBOX and her xbox began to freeze also. I was blamed for the xbox breakdown and lack of netflicks. This has to be a problem with there servers because the hardware is fine.

denhamfmly

Yup, same here since just now. No problems last night and just went to use xbox and freaked out thinking it was the console. Now I feel better. Hope this gets resolved soon.
