Microsoft has no plans to release more Halo games on Steam

Company confirms it's not planning to release any more Halo games for Valve's marketplace "at this time."

by

Halo: Spartan Assault launches April 4 on PC through Steam, marking the acclaimed franchise's debut on Valve's virtual marketplace, but don't expect more Halo games to follow.

"We have no further 'Halo' releases on Steam planned at this time," a Microsoft spokesperson told GameSpot.

Microsoft ported Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2 to the PC, but all subsequent entries in the series have arrived only for consoles.

A new Halo game will launch in 2014, but it's unclear if this is 343 Industries' "legitimate" Halo title for Xbox One or potentially the rumored Halo 2 Anniversary, or maybe even something else.

Well perhaps they plan to release a new game market on PC, sure it sucks it wont be on Steam but perhaps they will release Xbone games on it so we dont have to spend $500 on a console with features alot of us dont want which dont warrant the price.

Just looking at a little bit better possibility, but odds are Xbone games will not be coming to PC.

lol the fools at MS dont understand what they are missing from a marketing perspective by not pushing more Halo games onto Steam. Even if it were just one other like Halo 3 or 4 they would make tons of money off of it and also create a large player base that would expect more.

That aside, I do believe that puting Spartan Assault on Steam means that they are testing the water and seeing how successful they can get. MS is stupid but something good might come out of this.

Microsoft try so hard to not sell their own PC games. Halo (and Halo 2) would do great on Steam.

In other words, we need Halo 5 to sell Xbox's so, no, we have no plans to undermine our position in the console market by porting our biggest franchise to the PC.  Did anyone think this was ever gonna happen?

I am a big twin stick shooter fan and snapped up a copy of Halo Spartan Assault almost as soon as it released on XB1. Wow, what a disappointment. Felt that it was clunky and released too early, 2 player co-op with only five levels was a joke. Just bad alround really.

Basically, the game sold so badly on consoles that they figured they could try and make some of the money back by trying to sell a crap ported version of the game to the PC crowd, i can promise you it will be 85% off whatever ripoff price they're trying to sell it for within a few months and it probably still wont sell much even then.

You can keep your sh*tty scraps MS, we dont want them.

emulators people, you have a gaming PC remember

What's stopping them from at least releasing Halo CE and 2 on Steam? It would require little to no effort on their part.

Just let players host their own Halo 2 servers so MS doesn't have to worry about keeping the multiplayer alive

randomkidlol

You dont need to release it on PC. Once the 360 and ps3 emulators come rolling around, anyone can play it on PC for free anyways.

Failed games that are not successful and they throw to Steam in hope to regain back some "losses". That's M$ for you.

My guess is that this is because they are going to release a windows game store this year, probably Xbox for Windows or some such.

What a surprise !

All PC gamers get from Microsoft are Windows Phone ports.

I don't get it, Microsoft has the PC market in the palm of its hand being it provides the most widely used operating system on the most powerful gaming platform on the planet and they want to try to gimp themselves by locking their most lucrative software in a box... Halo could dominate the PC market that they dominate already but no let's instead keep it by itself so no one can play it unless they buy a special platform that's not even half of what a PC can do... Next they'll move Halo to its own platform that only plays Halo because they don't like how you can play other games on X-Box...

Given my insipid past experience with Halo 2 PC, it's fine. I'm glad they don't plan to release more Halo on PC.

@micnet007 We mostly just want a re-release of the original Halo Trilogy on Steam. (of which part 3 has never been on PC yet)

@leakingdogmilk

I've been PC gaming since 1998, so that certainly doesn't apply to me. My first gaming rig had an AMD K6-2 350 and two Monster 3D2s running in SLI.

@KiLLLeR150

They don't want to support PCs and PC gamers, what they want is the Valve customer base to be theirs.

@randomkidlol 360 emulators might happen sometime soon, PS3 emulators are technically next to impossible though.

The closest you'll get are blurry YouTube videos of people who say they're playing working PS3 emulators, which they can't post a link to... for some reason...

@noandno  There is a good reason the Steambox has been created and I think it is the premonition of a new digital game store from Microsoft on Windows.

@JustWingin_IT Microsoft is batshit crazy.  They should be pushing the PC as the superior gaming platform (with their OS installed on it), not running their own console IN DIRECT COMPETITION with that OS, and then trying to ruin the PC gaming market.

Spartan_418
Spartan_418

@JustWingin_IT I'm not sure how much demand there really is for Halo on PC, I think the average PC gamer views Halo as kiddie garbage that casualized the FPS genre

gamespotpanayis
gamespotpanayis

@JustWingin_IT  ... or they will release their own competitor to Steam very shortly in the form of a PC Xbox (as in brand, not console) Store.

@3dmatrixgamer There is no "but after a while", but even if they will say that how much will they want to wait? Halo 3 will be 7 years old. Halo 2 was 4 years old when they ported it. The only option I can see is that they will allow PC gamers to play Halo through their cloud based gaming service if it ever will come out and if they will not restrict it to be a XBO service, but with backwards compatibility...

brande77
brande77

@konstantinxy @FULGOREY2KYea, a recent article I think on Kotaku, claimed that PS4/360 emulators were in the early stages. It will be next decade though until you can play the games on PC I'm sure.

konstantinxy

@Spartan_418 @randomkidlol  Just recently they made an advancement with PS3 emulation by running a commercial game on it, i think the emulator is called RPCS3. The game isn't that impressive looking though but still

randomkidlol
randomkidlol

@Spartan_418 @randomkidlol  Its not impossible. It will be very difficult, but it will be done eventually. The emulation will also be very cpu and gpu intensive, but the rate at which hardware is improving will offset the cost of emulation, just like how any computer today can run n64 games on an emulator, but was not really efficient back in 2000.

3dmatrixgamer
3dmatrixgamer

@Forcecaster  Halo is not an ordinary game as it hasbeen a system seller of every Xbox so i dont think they will port it any soon but i guess 10 years will be an enough time to port Halo3 and spinoffs.

@gamespotpanayis @JustWingin_IT

Yep...I feel a big battle is brewing between Valve and MS.

It seems everyone wants a piece of the Valve pie...the only company whose stuck with PC gamers; unlike Epic and others.

Forcecaster
Forcecaster

@3dmatrixgamer Don't want to disappoint you, but whoever wanted to play Halo 3 already has the game and the console. 7 years is a long time and now that the series moves to XBO it is about time to get the old titles to the PC or XBO...
