WizKids Media has today announced that it has an agreement with Hollywood screenwriter and producer Dean Devlin--who has previously worked on such movies as Independence Day, Godzilla, Stargate, The Patriot, and Eight Legged Freaks--to produce a movie based on the MechWarrior universe.

"Whether I write the script, help with the script or direct, I'm crazy about the material. This is a real passion project for me," said Devlin, who is hoping to get the movie into theatres sometime in the next two years.

"The film, in many ways, will be a coming of age story," said Jordan Weisman, WizKids CEO and creator of the MechWarrior universe. "It's set 40 years after the 'Mech wars have ended, and introduces a group of young heroes in their early 20s who have grown up in peaceful and prosperous times."

Details on the film's plot are scarce at present, but it will apparently focus on a number of factions within The Republic that are actively seeking to start the same kind of 'Mech war that ravaged their world in the past.
