Mario Kart 8 Drives Massive Wii U Sales, 3DS Is Number Two Console on NPD

Movin' on up.

Official NPD US May data is coming out later today, but Nintendo is getting ahead of the announcements with some good news: Wii U sales are up over 85% over April and over 90% over May of last year.

Part of that success was likely driven by anticipation for Mario Kart 8, which had immensely successful sales on its own. According to Nintendo NPD data for all of the US, Mario Kart 8 came in as the "No. 3 best-selling software SKU in May." That's even more impressive when taking into account that the game launched on May 30, so it only factored into two days of the NPD's month-long report. Nintendo reported earlier that Mario Kart 8 was the Wii U's fastest-selling game so far, with 1.2 million sales shortly after launch.

The 3DS continues to show strong performance as well, coming in as the number two best-selling console for May.

Nintendo has had a rocky start to the beginning of the year, but it garnered a lot of goodwill last week at E3, and you can catch up on all the big announcements from their Nintendo Direct presentation as well as a list of all the new games revealed at the show. And GameSpot editor Carolyn Petit made the argument that Nintendo came out as the overall winner at E3.

We'll have even more NPD data when it becomes available later this afternoon.

So, what is the real numbers? I searched and couldn't find how many WiiU's were sold. It says that it had an 85% jump, but was still number 2 behind the PS4 and another article talked about the XBOX One having 95% of the PS4 sales. Without any concrete sales numbers, I would say all 3 were pretty even during May. Good for us.

Of course... Saying the real numbers might put into perspective that they are all very close and that would NOT make a good GS fanboy war article.

I picked up a Wii U yesterday afternoon due in no small part to Mario Kart 8 and a strong showing at E3. I'm really enjoying the game so far, but the console - less so.

Maybe it's just me but I was expecting a much more fluid user experience than what I wound up with. It feels a bit sluggish to navigate the UI and the myriad system updates also took much longer to download and apply than I would have preferred (on a 19.5mbps line)

Nintendo has an awesome first party lineup, as does Microsoft. I own both Wii U and Xbox One. As far as content goes I get the best of both worlds in first party exclusives, blu ray, and excellent TV functions with X1, and solid selection of indie exclusives for both Microsoft and Nintendo, which in my humble opinion has Sony beaten hand over fist.

Good for Nintendo and better for me when those casual players trade there Wii u in later cus of no games they aren't on the system.

If I were to choose between my Xbox ONE, PS4 and Wii U I'd stay with the latter.

I used to like Sony during the PS2 era because of the many different games it had; nowadays the variety of good quality games are much less, innovation and creativity in gameplay is lacking and they put too much focus on silly non-gaming elements (PS TV, twitch). It shares too many similarities with M$ now.

It's a good thing that Nintendo tries to keep things fresh (even if they use Mario a little too much), as each game of theirs is different in a gameplay perspective.

Good for Nintendo, they don't make games that appeal to me anymore, but I am sure some people like their games.

The Wii U is too underpowered for good 3rd party support. Which is why only first party games excel. Nintendo doesn't need an overpowered console for Mario and Zelda games.

If this is what it takes to get Nintendo back in the game, then good on them.  They make good games, they deserve to make money.  I don't want any side dropping out of this race.... although, I wouldn't shed a tear if Nintendo overtook Microsoft to second place.

Good going Nintendo.....now release something great without Mario or Zelda. Oh.

I am so happy for the Wii U.  I've had it since December (Xmas gift) and I love it.  Not to put any other console down but at this moment nothing interests me.  Killer Instinct, Mortal Kombat and the new Batman could push me to get a new system but not until next year or so.  Right now I think the best games are on the Wii U.  Only grip I have is the virtual console, they need to work on that.  I have not bought Mario Kart yet but I will next week...can't wait!

Maybe now all the "Nintendo is doomed" articles can go away for good.

You Nintendrones are so pathetic. One game (the EIGHT version) did good and you act like it's the Second Coming of Christ that is going to save the FailU for the rest of its empty existence

Calling a handheld a console still bothers me. And with the WiiU, honestly, until the 2rd party devs jump back on board you'd be owning the console just to play a few 1st party titles... Not only that, 3rd party devs would have to create brand sspankin' new titles because who the hell in their right mind would pick up a game that would be visually crippled compared to their PS4 and xbox1 counterparts?

And let me get one thing straight, I love Nintendo, always have, always will, but I'm an adult that can afford to throw money around a bit more than younger kids that actually want the console. So the people that would buy it, if they buy only ONE console, I can't see it being the WiiU...I hope something gives on the issue and it all works out, but I'm pretty skeptical at this point.

They said 82% of MK8 sales in the UK were with the Wii U Bundle, so it is a system seller!

Yeah, I can see this. I just bought my Wii U because of MK8 and the Zelda announcement. I can't believe I waited so long, so many awesome games.

@Defender1978 Yes! That's the real master race! PC alone just doesn't do it, Wii U supplements it perfectly.

meanwhile, them XBO/PS4 fools be playing multiplats inferior to PC, and exclusives inferior to Wii U.

@rolla020980 From what i can find on the internet the Wii U is just about 9 hundred thousand short of the play station 4 when it comes to consoles sold.. For what it's worth despite all the doom and gloom the gaming industry has been passing around the Wii U it's not doing that bad. The sales for all consoles are low just because it's a weak economy still people don't have a lot of money to splurge on things.

Why is that so important to you?

@rolla020980 These are the figures i could find for may

PS4 = 194K
3DS = 87K
XB1 = 76K
WIIU = 60K
360 = 57K
Vita = 56K
PS3 = 36K
Wii = 11K

MK was only on sale for 2 days of that so its the end of June thats gonna see how well its really doing.

@rolla020980 It doesn't really matter how the consoles compare to each other, the salient point is Wii U sales are almost double for the month.

@danhalen Once updated it is not bad and you get used to the differences. I even grew to like the gamepad after using it for awhile. You can add me as a friend if you like NDIrishfan71 we might hook up online in Mario Kart sometime. Right now I am still learning all the tracks before getting online with it:P

@charlesswann

It is more than that... Maybe during that specific month, but as of the last report, the X1 and PS4 were out for 5.5 months and sold 5 mill and 7 mill respectively. During that time, that means that both sold over 1,000,000 per month on average (much more for the PS4). Even the WiiU has averaged well over 350,000 per month since launch.  Even the old 360 sold well over 100K in February, which is the last month I could find figures for.

@fatalscorpion All I've been playing is Mario Kart 8 on Wii U and MLB 14 the Show on PS4.  If you're not a FPS fanatic… there's no reason to even look at Xbox1 for 1st party.  PS4 and Wii U will abuse Xbox1 with AAA type exclusives once 2015 rolls around and beyond.

That almost makes sense except where are these exclusive indie titles for x1 you speak of?

BlackBaldwin

@cboye18 Like soo many other people out there I doubt you even know what the ps tv or twitch even is yet alone how to use them. Enjoy your console however low tech it is it still is a step up from mobile phone gaming.

blaznwiipspman1

@SurlyPotato a ton of people like their games, most of them are just waiting for the games to flesh out.  Not to mention, the gamepad turned off alot of people.

blaznwiipspman1

@tommynj wii u is fine for any game out there as long as the developer takes their time to do the work. I mean, the ps4 and xbox one are severely underpowered compared to my PC, yet developers still makes game for those consoles.  How does that work?

Mayleene
Mayleene

@tommynj  Most third party games for the other two systems are released with too many bugs and glitches for me to justify purchasing either of those consoles.

blaznwiipspman1
blaznwiipspman1

@rickphoenixxx sure and what is the purpose of owning an xbox one and ps4?  All their games are crappy versions of the superior PC.

Mayleene

@fede018  Call of Dooky is at it's 10th version with an 11th on the way.....so your point it?

blaznwiipspman1

@dynomitemasta sure, the wii U is more than enough as a console.  Most people already have an xbox 360 or ps3 that they can use for any 3rd party games they need.  Not to mention, everybody has a PC that can be upgraded to a beastly being.

@FLEEBS @Bread_or_Decide I now understand why people complain so much about Nintendo. They are just jealous!

Seriously though, do Sony and Microsoft games do or sell incredibly well like how Nintendo games do? Maybe for some cases, but overall Nintendo is the one that has huge first party quality games that sell incredibly well!
