Mafia 3's Excellent Soundtrack Revealed, Contains These 100-Plus Songs

2K's upcoming crime game Mafia III is set in 1968, which was a great time for music. Now, the game's entire lineup of licensed songs have been announced, featuring lots of great tracks--even more than the game's director thought 2K would be able to get the rights to.

There are more than 100 songs featured in the game, including multiple tracks from The Rolling Stones like "Paint It Back" and "Sympathy for the Devil."

The band Creedence Clearwater Revival has a number of songs in the game, including "Proud Mary" and "Fortunate Son." The latter of those ties into Mafia III's narrative somewhat in that it's a song about the Vietnam War. CCR's "Bad Moon Rising" and "Born on the Bayou" are also in the game.

Aretha Franklin's "Respect," "Help Me Rhonda" by The Beach Boys, and "Ring of Fire" from Johnny Cash are also featured in the game. Check out the complete lineup below, as posted by Rolling Stone. It's truly an impressive list.

These songs will play throughout the game and sometimes are used strategically to support the story. For example, the CCR song "Green River" comes on when players are hunting someone down in the bayou.

Another interesting element of Mafia III's soundtrack is that it features licensed cover songs, too. The game itself is presented through flashbacks from a 2016 hearing that dives into the events of Lincoln Clay in 1968 New Bordeaux. This gave developer Hangar 13 some new opportunities for music.

"When I look back on some of this music, the way I encountered a lot of it without even realizing it is through covers. There's a song in the game called 'You Belong to Me' from the Duprees. They weren't the first ones to perform it but that's the version we have in the game," director Haden Blackman told Rolling Stone. "I actually was introduced to that song through the Misfits version of it.

"We have a moment in the game where you hear the Duprees version and it's a really dramatic moment between two characters," he added. "It's playing on a radio in the background and it's very fitting of the moment. Then later we have a really powerful turning point for one of those characters and you hear just a brief snippet of the Misfits version. There's something really special about the thunder of the Misfits doing this song that's very poetic and powerful."

Blackman also said he was very doubtful at first that 2K would be able to secure the rights for some of the songs it wanted to include in the game.

"There were artists that I thought there would be no way we'd ever get, and yet they came through," Blackman said. "So Creedence, the Rolling Stones, we have the Beach Boys, Aretha Franklin, Johnny Cash, Sam Cooke, Elvis. Honestly, I was doubtful that we'd be able to get this wide spectrum of '60s artists."
