Layoffs at Tomb Raider studio

Square Enix lays off about 12 developers at Crystal Dynamics; job cuts came from new IP team and won't affect Tomb Raider sequel.

Square Enix has cut roughly 12 positions at Tomb Raider studio Crystal Dynamics, the publisher confirmed with Kotaku today.

The cuts came from the team working on the company's previously announced all-new franchise and will not affect development on the next-generation Tomb Raider sequel.

"We've made some decisions at Crystal Dynamics last week around the second project we’re working on, which has resulted in a small number of roles (roughly 12) becoming redundant as we re-scope the project," the company said.

"This doesn't affect the Tomb Raider development team, who as confirmed last week are well into production on a next-generation sequel," the statement goes on. "We're a close-knit team at Crystal and wouldn't be making these changes if we didn't feel it was absolutely necessary. We'll help those affected as best we can and we want to thank them for their hard work and commitment."

The new IP from Crystal Dynamics was announced in January 2012. No information about the game has been revealed since.

I got good hopes for the next Tomb Raider game. The first one was ok, but I just feel they know where improvements were needed and can perfect their formula. Just a gamer instinct.

I guess this is what happens when you set your expectations too high.

Can't say I care to remember the years I spend playing and replaying all previous games of Tomb Raider, which I own on PS (yes, I still have it stored in an old shoebox with these games), on PC and xBox360 and Steam....but the Reboot is like AC3, I just can't get back into it, dare I say it, I am bored. And I am not even halfway through. And these are not the only two new games I started and so far not gotten back to playing them. Thank goodness for my drawer of old games, I find I still have the love for most of them and their replay value.

Did it have anything to do with Obamacare mandates?

this pretty much encapsulates a major problem in the game industry. whatever you do publishers don't try anything new, by all means stick with the so-so franchise

If they say so, but it's always suspicious when a new IP gets reduced staff, while the already established IP is already moving along nicely. Can't blame companies for doing so, though, even if Crystal Dynamics isn't one of those companies. Familiarity sells.

Business as usual.

I'm always up for a new IP, I just hope it turns out ok.

this is a pretty misleading title...it says "Layoffs at Tomb Raider studio"...and only after reading the article you seethat  none of the team developing TR was fired, but those working on soem other unnamed project were...you can see it on the comments here people did not read the full article or even part of it, GS could you please make more appropriate headlines, "Layoffs at Crystal Dynamics" would be more appropriate as it wouldn't suggest to people that guys working on Tomb Raider were fired (unlike the first heading) whereas in fact they were not...

That sucks , I hope these people find new jobs soon.Crystal Dynamics has been doing pretty well lately but I'm a bit concerned about what squares gonna do With them.

Not surprising with costs of game developing going up, these third parties gotta find some way to break even.  With these next gen systems coming out more layoffs like this are bound to happen. I hope that these guys get back on their feet.

Hopefully the quality of the new IP won't be effected. They said the roles were redundant, let's hope they were.

that sucks. hope they find another gig. and i hope square is rethinking their expectations so multi million sales isnt still considered a dissapointment

Okay, the reboot is so good for me. All they need to do is keeping the action sequence but less, the hollywood scenes need more longer a little bit, the story need focus on bringing more emotion not only to Lara, the others too; bringing some traps and more complex puzzle (maybe in some Tombs) into the optional Tombs and about explorer it needs more things to do. Maybe we can chat or have some sequences that your friends are hurt, you need to find it on somewhere on the maps, and how she can go there, she needs to do something first, it kinda like the sidequest. Bring Tressfx to the next-gen consoles. The long story campaign. Look at how the Last of Us did on both single player and multiplayer, they need to learn from that. Eventhough the reboot is one of the best games of this year, just my opinions. And please, SE, don't ruin it.

I'm so tired of gaming developers following up with "won't affect the sequel" after announcing a lay-off. Like if we were going to go on a tirade  because the game were to take longer to complete and didn't care about the affected laid-off developers or their families.

These companies would look better if they announced that the laid-off developers would receive %100 pay and benefits for the next three or so months, like Zynga did.

@plm3d_basic If they got fired cause of OBAMACARE it is not OBAMACARE that fired them it is the executives that did. Cause they choose to fire them then insure them. Which to me is pretty fucked up. IF THAT IS THE CASE. Not sure that it is.

So it's better that a company go bankrupt because it's forced to pay healthcare benefits to its employees?  Also, where in the Constitution is it a right to have healthcare?

Hurvl
Hurvl

@4le_breVVer It could be intentional to get more clicks, but it could also be unintentional. How many of Gamespot's readers know that Crystal Dynamics is behind the new Tomb Raider game? There are a lot of companies making games, it's hard to keep track of them all. People know Tomb Raider a lot more than they know Crystal Dynamics, so perhaps Gamespot chose/often chooses the more familiar thing.

BradBurns

@namitokiwa

If that is true, then it has pretty much outsold most AAA Japanese games this gen.

To put it into perspective, the last time I checked Resident Evil 5 (which was better received than its successor both commercially and critically) it was a little past the 5 million mark.

In all honesty, what were they expecting?

It's an old franchise that has had more downs than ups. To be honest I feel that it sold better than it had any right to by leaps and bounds.

The 14th Amendment guarantees every citizen the unalienable right to "life". To deny one healthcare that would save them is to deny them life.

Hurvl

@SynysterSpartan @Hurvl Yeah, it's probably intentional, at least to some degree, I was just adding a different reason, something that I've often heard media say as a response/defense. Just as I like to make up conspiracy theories, it's fun to go the opposite way - what if it's completely justifiable/reasonable? Reality is often quite dull and undramatic, but that's no reason to believe it's like that everytime.

SynysterSpartan
SynysterSpartan

@Hurvl You are right about that and it is a perfectly valid reason. But that isn't why they twist their headlines. They need as many people clicking on articles as possible to generate ad revenue. They do this to as many headlines as possible, just like IGN, Kotaku, and every other news site.

soulless4now
soulless4now

@BradBurns The problem is that they're starting to rely too much on Western sales so if it doesn't sale enough over here it seems to be a failure in their eyes. They can't expect it to do call of duty numbers. It sold well for an action especially, within the first month of release. That's something they should be proud of.

BradBurns
BradBurns

@soulless4now @emperiox @decoy1978

I'm surprised that it managed to sell that much.

That franchise has been tarnished by a  several okay games in the past.

They honestly can't expect it to sell ant better than it already did.
