Konami passes Judgment on Castlevania

Publisher's long-running vampire-slaying franchise enters 3D fighter arena on the Wii this fall.

Beginning with Castlevania on the Nintendo 64, Konami has for the past 10 years rendered Koji Igarashi's famed vampire-slaying franchise on consoles in 3D, while maintaining the series' traditional 2D aesthetic on handhelds. Throughout that span, the publisher has maintained a consistent record of winning critical praise for its side-scrolling handheld efforts and receiving a generally tepid reception for its console games.

With Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia slated to arrive on the Nintendo DS this fall, Konami is once again returning with a 3D console game: Castlevania Judgment for the Wii. However, rather than taking another crack of the whip at the action adventure genre, Konami has a mind to reinvigorate the franchise by entering the Belmont clan and its demonic nemeses into a battle-royal fighting arena.

Though Konami has named no specific fighters, the publisher said that it would be pulling its cast from the franchise's entire 22-year history. Making use of the Wii's motion-sensing control scheme, Konami notes that players will control their fighters using the Wii Remote and Nunchuk to attack, along with brandishing objects and items strewn around the 3D environments. Players will also be able to set traps as well as enlist monsters to fight for them, though Konami did not expound on the nature of these mechanics.

Castlevania Judgment will feature an online fighting mode, and will also interface with Order of Ecclesia on the DS for added gameplay content. The game is expected to ship for the Wii this fall.

I didn't think I was going to hate this thing until I seen the screenshots. Has anyone seen these things?! Jesus Christ! Look how atrocious those character designs are! Alucard and Maria (especially) look horrible! And look at Simon! That's not the way he's even supposed to look! That's based on the poorly conceived Ayame Kojima illustration! Looks to be pretty shallow. I don't think this is going to work at all. Castlevania's reputation has been really put to the test with the idiotic decisions that have been made in the last 10 years with all those bad 3D games, and terrible style in the last two DS outings. Except that Castlevania: Lament of Innocence was good.

Cool, but do they have enough characters?

I'm holding judgment on this until release and in the mean time anticipating playing as Reinhardt Schneider with fanboy enthusiasm!

This is going to be a horrible game. Why not just make a retro 2D sidescroller of epic proportions a la Symphony of the Night? Viewtiful Joe did a stylish 2D adventure and it was highly acclaimed. There's a reason your handheld adventures still rock and all the 3D ones are horrendous.

i hope it features Charlie Vincent from Castlevania 64. also Carrie Fernandez and Death should be in this game. have some doubts about the controls though, remember MK armageddon?

Note to Konami: Mario and company get to appear in well received side projects because the heart and soul of Nintendo's franchises live on in recent CONSOLE and portable games. Maybe the next Iron Man movie can be a romantic comedy! Our hero will spend his time away from the suit and discover true romance. It will about the weekend he went to meet her family. He'll crack little jokes about being a superhero; but he still can't face those awful future in-laws! It's Iron Man and Meet the Parents joined into one! There could even be one action scene in there! As long as it doesn't interfere with the sweet romantic flavored laughter. It's really about true love! What a shocker! It's not what you wanted; but it DESERVES a chance!

This title will kill the little remaining 'greatness' of a game that has come to fill the gaming community generation, Where Metal Gear went along with us players, growing with us in a military way, the same can be said about Castlevania in the adventure growth with us players. Don't know who was the moron who had this idea but he or she should be hanged, Castlevania had never been a fighting game, it has been an adventure and roleplaying game and each of its incarnations has brought the greatest enjoyment to many consoles... until now. What is next? Metal Gear meets my little pony? Mario Bros Vs the tax payers? They should cancel this now and make a new Castlevania story. LH.

Sweet! So it's brawl only with Simon, Leon, Trevor, Richter, Soma, Juste and Alucard. I'd totally buy that if it's decently done. Ofcoarse while it's got all the potential to be horrible I'd prefer to stay optimistic for now.

This is the most confusing news I've ever discovered. But it bodes for extremely bad tidings that they snubbed the brilliant Ayami Kojima for the Yaoi-like styling of the Death Note artist. Why not use that Masaki person again like with Order of Ecclesia?! I can see myself buying this game and selling it back the same day... that's how confused I am about this. God I hate fighting games.

First off, the Castlevania games for the N64....freaking rocked. Now alot may disagree, but if you go look up the ol' ratings for it, it got solid scores. Like a solid 8 or up. Why? As one of the EGM ratings says "kick ass level design". If any player gave it a real try they would see the same. With that out of the way, a incredible 3D Castlevania is not impossible. Just takes the right people doing the work. As someone already stated, Nintendo has had great success in bring their 2D games into 3D. Konami could do the same. As for this Castlevania online fighting game all I can say right now is hmmmm. We'll see in time if they can pull it off.

Nintendo Power has an article on this. Apparently Simon Belmont, Alucard, Maria (that girl from Rondo of Blood), and Dracula have been announced so far. The problem is that some manga artist redesigned all of them so Alucard is wearing some kind of tight lightish purple clothing (he looks very feminine), Dracula is like a golden statue with spiky things sticking out of his chest and Simon looks like Light Yagami from Death Note. I'm really hoping there will be alternative costumes (like the original costumes, please?). Oh and apparently you can get Order of Ecclesia's main char by connecting your ds to your wii or something. I REALLY hope this game wont be as bad as the other 3d Castlevanias. I want to play a game as Alucard again (like with SotN powers, not like Dawn of Sorrow). Don't ruin Alucard or I'll KEEL you!!

So many people already dismissing the game when we know almost nothing real about it. Sounds like a cool and interesting idea to me and is at least worth a little optimism. I'm sure that lil' Nintendo made fighter on the Wii must suck too then. What was it called again, Super Smash Bros Brawl? Konami, like Nintendo, deserves a chance. It might even come out good ya know.

I'm waving my Wiiwand around like a whip! This way not only am I doing the same crappy brawler style gameplay that 3D Castlevania is known for, I get to do it with sloppy controls!

Castlevania is one of those franchises with a huge fanbase. We learned in the past that 3D Castlevanias don't work to well. We've also learned that if you change a franchise to dramaticly it's probably going to fail. I believe Konami would have a better chance making a fighting game with a new IP instead of trying to reinvent Castlevania. People love the 2D Castlvanias that's been proven over and over. There is always the chance for a Metroid Prime case where change has brought success to an already great franchise. I guess there is always a possibility for success. As gamers we all have seen must own games release with disappointment and underdogs become the game of the year. Let's not count Castlevania out yet.

It is in Nintendo Power, and honestly, I think it looks worse than Soul Caliber I. Honestly. I am a huge Castlevania fan, but this game looks absolutely awful. Some of the characters even have redesigns, and the noble Alucard looks like a female... oh geez.

Castlevania needs to stay 2D. Even the creator thinks so.

I don't know how well this will go over (the N64 and PS2 3D Castlevanias didn't do do well.) We'll just have to wait and see.

Well hopefully they can come up with something as awesome as Soul Caliber 2 was. And who knows if they can get the Belmonts to move and fight just right in 3-D environments, then perhaps a solid action-adventure game wouldn't be too far benhind.

Pyro77
Pyro77

The the time of the early 90's when every freakn IP decided to make a lame fighting game is over. Damn it. I thought they were announcing a real 3D Castlvania game. I was even more excited the Belmonts were back to replace the girly boy characters of late. Sigh...such a disapoointment. aaargh

A fighting game? Meh... They should make another 3D adventure. The remote would be perfect for whipping on the Wii. I've always liked Castlevania in 3D. Sure, it's awesome in 2D, but I think the Wii would have been a good place for a 3D adventure.

At least Konami is trying new things with the series. This gives me hope to see a game come out in the future in 3-d for the PS3, 360. It will cost them less to make it once the devs learn how to optimize for the consoles. I can't believe I am still enjoying Symphony of the Night after all these years again.

Geostrike

From what I've seen in Nintendo Power this game looks well............ awful. But then again I never really had much faith in 3D Castlevania. If 2D works then why do they keep changing it?

randomguy15

Can nintendo keep anything the same? They already screwed up rock band, and this one isn't looking to promising. Why couldn't they leave it the same as other castlvanias?

quietcool72

In the history of terrible gaming ideas, this has got to be one of the bigger ones. 3D fighting game? Wait...is this 1996? Come on! And to screw with one of the most beloved action franchises with this kind of idiocy is beyond me. Just plain dumb.

Fang_lord

I want this to rock...but i almost know for sure it will fail. From the top of my head i can only think of 1 company that can make a 2d game into a fantastic 3d game, and that is good ol' Nintendo, they done Mario, Zelda, Metroid, DK etc. then turned them all back into 2d for SSB. Unless Nintendo are personally manning this project i dont have high hopes...but yeah, nintendo own at the whole changing 2d to 3d thing...unlike SEGA!!! you know what i mean....*sough*sonic*cough*

Please Konami (and this goes out to you too, iga) if you appreciate your fan base and the castlevania franchise i suggest not going through with this project. I love castlevania as much as everyone else but let's not forget the horrible N64 game that was released. might i suggest a Next-gen installment of castlevania!!! i'd love to play that. Oh! and a next-gen contra game,Too!!!

BaconBurns

3D Castlevania was a bad idea. A Castlevania fighting game is even worse. Konami should stick with what made the earlier games great. The action/adventure aspects and tight controls. This just seems like a waste of money to me. I mean how many people are even going to buy this crap!
