Kinect brain training, Pac-Man unveiled in Japan

Reports out of Microsoft press conference reveal new mind-and-body game from Brain Age cocreator Dr. Ryuta Kawashima; Namco's pill-muncher also spotted on system.

by

In this morning's announcement of the 250GB Xbox 360 Kinect bundle, Microsoft teased that it would be revealing new games for its motion-sensing system at next week's Tokyo Game Show. While it's unclear which new titles the company will reveal, some light was shed on the lineup in a Japanese press conference last night.

Dr. Ryuta Kawashima is crafting a brain training game for Kinect.

Gaming blog Andriasang was in attendance and reported that one of the titles will be a Kinect brain training title from Namco Bandai. Dr. Ryuta Kawashima, cocreator of the wildly successful DS Brain Age series, apparently served as an advisor on the game and his name will be featured in the title.

The title will reportedly feature a number of hybrid motion/puzzle-based minigames, including a soccer ball game in which players kick balls with the right answers to math questions. Another minigame will have players pop balloons bearing numbers in an ascending or descending order.

Also demonstrated at the event was Pac-Man's first presence on the Kinect system. As can be seen in the YouTube video below, the game will have players move both hands to control Pac-Man and the various bonus items he munches on. It was unclear from the blog whether or not the game would be part of the brain training title, and US Namco Bandai reps had not responded to requests for comment as of press time.

Kinect goes on sale in Japan on November 20 and will cost ¥14,800 ($177) in a bundle with Kinect Adventures. Those two items will also be included in a ¥29,800 ($355) bundle with the matte-finish 4GB Xbox 360 and a ¥39,800 ($475) bundle with the glossy 250GB Xbox 360. Both models come with built-in N wireless functionality.

Ok, I'm really starting to worry about the Kinect. I get the feeling that it will be dead before it even starts. MS needs to think about some of the junk that it's bringing out for it. Currently I really see the Sony Move as having a great deal more potential than the Kinect and I have had the Kinect reserved for a while. If gamers don't see some true gaming potential from this thing it will flop before it gets out the door, and become MS's Sega "32x". Get it right guys or don't waste our time like Sega did. It's not the Kinect that has issues but the poor planning for games behind it.

Kinetic will not work at all..in my opinion

Dr. Ryuta isn't crafting SH*T! He was just an advisor. Whoopty do! Nice try M$, but Kinect = FAIL.

Why dont you just ... Talk to some girls. Hell, for the $150 you'd be paying for kinect you could buy a russian wife.

I'll certainly buy 360 with Kinect if Japanese developers make dating sims that support Kinect and make it region free.

@ IceJester45 Did you just call yourself a hardcore gamer? HA! Anyone that gives themselves such a title is merely fooling themselves.

People actually paying money for Kinect sure could use some of that training! Hehe, just kidding. ;) Who doesn't like to screw around with the fan-boys?

(Looks at the Pac Man) OK, that's terrible, even for a mini-game. Pac Man doesn't even stay inside the walls for pity's sake.

Lol, really MS, a brain training game?! The thing that makes the brain training games so successful on the DS is because it has the feature of PORTABLITY, so when ever you're bored or have some free time you can whip out the DS and start brain training. It's not meant to be like "Hmm. I'm going to have an hour long brain training session today" and you go stand in front of your TV for an hour, it's just meant to be a fun casual exercise.

@nickythenewt21, brainage on the ds should be called hand age. this game will make your brain use your whole body so that will be even better since your brain has to tell everything to react not just the hands and eyes. im betting right now this will be the best brain age to date....

@aGiantSquirrel, people will do anything. like the wekk 360 s came out people would shake them on youtube while the power was on and say omg 360 s still scratches discs:lol:

@COPMAN221 I stand corrected. That was the only technical issue I knew of for PS Move. Now, I did read somewhere that PS Move wont work outdoors becuase of the light, but while reading that article, I wondered who would do that, and I dont think anyone would.

nickythenewt21

...a brain training game? Really? It makes sense to do it on a DS because the touch screen allows you to write answers. But on the Kinect?...no. Just no.

@COPMAN221, ok you been playing move and all its games for weeks now. that changes everything!!! im very sorry i will not trust anymore gaming sites. ill just go to system wars and search for lucky poeple like you that gets this stuff before everyone else even gaming sites.

aGiantSquirrel don't believe the nonsense. I have the move and play with the lights on and windows open and have had no lighting issues. Type ENFORCER266 on youtube and check out the videos of me testing out the Move at my home..

@monson21502 "MAYBE" seems to be the theme of your message. Ive heard of Maybe too many times before. Like with the gamecube, Maybe they will have extensive use of the Modem port for games like Xbox Live does, for example(Not trying to be mean to GC, Love that sys, but for its games, not its network). Wrong! I dont buy a product based on Maybe. If it doesnt have good games, Im simply not buying it. But thats just me. I could very easily see a child asking the dad to pick up Kinect to play kinectibals because its cute. But thats not me. I might get it if I see it make good use of a few good core games, but that would be the only reason. As for Move, yes it does have lighting issues, thats its main problem, but Kinect also has lighting issues(makes it harder to track the player), and many additional issues on top of that that I dont feel like writing about.

and like clock work monson21502 is here once again to entertain us all with his PS3 bashing... :( Dude are you ever going to quit? You qoute IGN like their word is Gospel. I speak from reality as I have had the move for weeks now and when I say it plays and controls better than the wii, it's because it does. I'm not bashing the wii just stating the facts. They took the wii concept and made it better...

monson21502
monson21502

@aGiantSquirrel, your wrong. ign said the ps3 eye has trouble with move in draker rooms even with that magic light bulb on top of it. ps3 eye cam couldnt even read eye of judgement cards right. sony only made one step in the copying process. they copied the wii and failed to improve their eye. i will not buy move as long as it needs the current ps3 eye to work.....

@aGiantSquirrel, xbox brand has been bashed over and over again for being a shotters only console. even though they have a ton of other games this gen they are still being labled that. now kinect is their chance to change peoples mind. and these first batch of kinect are aimed at kids and other ppl who dont like killing or what ever. and they are still getting bashed. im sure ms and other devs are coming up with ideas for core games like halo, gears and fable ect. might not me total motion control but maybe use some of kinects other features to add something new. hell ied be happy to be able to thust my controlor to reload lol or another way so i wouldnt have to use some of the other anoying buttons like left on the d pad to use a killstreak . other then that i dont want motion in my shooters.

That Pac-Man game is a disgrace to the Pac-Man series. What garbage! Kinect is such a failure I don't know where to begin. Bring me some games that will make me interested MS, seriously! Not some crap where I paddle my hands to swim down a river, or wave my hand collecting fruit while waving the other not to get hit, or looking at cockpits and car models, or petting animals, or kicking balls, or .... you get the point.

COPMAN221

aGiantSquirrel Actually the move takes from the Wii controller and makes it 100% better. I have it and I'm extemely pleased with it...

im sure ppl will have fun with both move and kinect, but as for me, im saving my money for some real games that are coming out during the fall and early next year...

@Jeanp34 youre right, Move is a copy of Wii. And Kinect is a copy of PSEye.

aGiantSquirrel

Some of you are noting Kinect's potential. But, my question is What potential? Im not trying to be rude, but think about it, if Kinect still isnt able to move your character around a screen or shoot a gun, what possible application for gaming does it have that we havent seen at E3? Go ahead, keep telling yourself that Kinect has potential when Microsoft will never find a way to move a character on a screen or be able to accelerate or stop a car. As for me, I prefer holding an actual steering wheel, because after all, In real life we drive with Tangible steering wheels. Kinect isnt trying to be more realistic, its just a gimmick.

@inferno9778 I don't think Microsoft if copying the Wii. What sony came up with is a copy. Kinect is different.

monson21502

@Inferno9778, ms isnt coping the wii. they took a risk with something new. and the end result is we will get to play these type of games in a new way... why so much hate on ms and kinect????

MOwens9512
MOwens9512

@DeadnBuried I'm inclined to agree with you LOL But sadly as it stands now, it may be the Kinect's only real hope of encouraging any current XBox owners that aren't blindly fanatical about their system and it's add-ons to invest in it. Adding any type of handheld control of it makes it even more of a failure seeing that it's selling point is hands free control. I'm just trying to put a bright spin on a bleek situation LOL

I want Kinect but not thanks to the games, my biggest interest is the tech. When I read all the specs and stuff I had a total geekasm. But one can only wonder why did MS choose to use the tech on gaming instead of other fields in which it could potentially be more useful, like surveillance.

robtheguru

I thought they proved brain training games are actually useless and only train your games for that particular exercise rather than developer your mind as a whole?

DeadnBuried
DeadnBuried

@MOwens9512 That Star Wars game for Kinect will never be any good, without any way to control character movement or camera control, it'll never be anything more than an on-rails game where all you do is wave your arms around like a crazy person. It's the same for the Harry Potter demo they showed, Kinect can never move past simple and shallow on-rails games unless they add in a thumbstick to control movement with or something.

@Flint247 Mario Galaxy 2 can hardly be used as a good example of motion controlled gaming, the extent of its motion controlling is a little waggle to spin around and pointing at the screen to pick star bits up. It plays just like any other traditional game only with added waggle to make up for the lack of buttons.

Am yet to see Kinect, with all its potential for being next gen UI [replacing multi-touch], come up with a decent enough gameplay mechanic.

I think Kinect has alot of potential and the technology behind it is impressive, but I have yet to see a single game that interests me. Hopefully we will see some games aimed at more than just the casual audience. As far as Pac Man goes, instead of using your hands just have the player walk around opening and closing his mouth over and over again. At least that would be funny to watch.

@EDD213 Not all motion games are "awful". Games like Super Mario Galaxy/2 use motion controls very well.
