Journey leads BAFTA Video Games Awards 2013 nominations

Thatgamecompany's PlayStation 3 exclusive leads the pack of 53 games nominated for 17 awards.

by

Journey might have bankrupted developer Thatgamecompany, but its award nominations keep on coming: the PlayStation 3 exclusive has been nominated in eight categories in the British Academy Video Games Awards 2013.

Far Cry 3 and The Walking Dead also received multiple nominations across the 17 categories. UK developers have been recognised among the 53 games nominated, including 4J Studios for its work on Minecraft Xbox 360 Edition, and Forza Horizon developer Playground Games.

Some of the year's biggest AAA blockbusters, such as Mass Effect 3, Borderlands 2, and Black Ops 2, are nominated elsewhere in the awards. They sit alongside indie darlings like Thomas Was Alone, Dear Esther, and Beat Sneak Bandit.

The British Academy Video Games Awards 2013 will take place on March 5 and will be hosted by Irish comedian Dara O'Briain. The evening will be live-streamed on Twitch.

"Game Innovation: Call of Duty: Black Ops II" Oh no, you didn't! Come on everybody, let's bash them for not having any clue of what the concept of innovation means and that it just can't be attributed to Blops 2 in any way possible.

Anyway, I think it's really cool that bafta nominates video games, since getting a bafta award is quite prestigious, which means that making video games is prestigious, but like any lists, there are things you personally disagree with. I think Dishonored should have gotten nominated in Artistic Achievement and Game Innovation, but that's me.

As a sidenote I'm already happy with this years bafta awards becuase the Swedish documentary Searching for Sugar Man got the award for best documentary. Anything else, including favorite games winning, is just icing on the video game cake (and no, that cake is not a lie).

Diablo III under STRATEGY!? Seriously? Who the hell put this list together? It would make more sense to have it under 'Action' (If you have to have it all).

Why was Spec Ops: The Line given the cold shoulder in these nominations? It failed to turn up in Game Design or Story and Nolan North sneaked into voice performance with Golden Abyss but not Spec Ops?  Some very strange choices here :/

@Aydenuille It's probably because there's no rpg category... which also makes little sense.

I guess they argued that because in rpg's you have to strategically use the specific abilities of one specific unit to destroy the enemy, it can be considered a strategy game...? I can't even convince myself...

@1braveknight1 Yeah, the more I read the list, the more I think BAFTA pulls the list out of their *sses based on sales and general internet hype.
