iPhone game wins top plaudit at Australian developer awards

Game Developers' Association of Australia (GDAA) crowns Firemint's Flight Control as best Aussie-made game of 2009; Heroes Over Europe and Puzzle Quest: Galactrix also honoured.

It's been a tough year for the Australian games development industry, with studios both big and small forced to lay off staff due to tough economic conditions. Amidst this doom and gloom, the body representing Australian game developers--the Game Developers' Association of Australia (GDAA)--last night tried to shine a positive light on the industry, announcing the winners of its annual awards at the Game Connect Asia Pacific 2009 conference. The GDAA crowned iPhone game Flight Control the best Aussie developed game of 2009. Flight Control was the brainchild of Firemint CEO Robert Murray and has sold more than 1.6 million copies around the world.

Flight Control was named the best Aussie-made game of 2009.

Melbourne-based Transmission Games, which was forced to close down earlier this year, managed to claim four out of the 12 awards on the night for flight game Heroes Over Europe, including Best Console Title. Other category winners were Puzzle Quest: Galactrix, which won the award for Best PC Title, while Shatter, by New Zealand developer Sidhe, won the Best Downloadable Game. It is unfortunate that Axis Mundi didn't take out one of the indie awards ;) It was funny when they announced best mobile title because the two games nominated were both from Firemint.

quite amusing and sad at the same time, either way flight control is an awesome game.

I've a couple of friends who are Australian game developers, and quite respected for the work they do. The Freedom Force series is Australian, the Homeworld series had a sizeable Australian component (from memory) and quite a few other titles you'd probably recognise. Of course, since the GFC a lot of studios have shut doors - Pandemic Brisbane being the most recent.

Considering this is a country that bans any game that would of gotten M or equivalent anywhere else because they refuse to make an equivalent rating I can't say I'm surprised they've had a brain drain in the videogame sector.

This is embarrassing. @Generic_Dude. I wouldn't say it is not in our skill set. Many of our top Universities offer degrees in this area, but most of us are forced to look for work over seas, with great success. The problem is lack of funding and a dinosaur government.

If your country's best game is an iPhone game, game development probably isn't in your national skill set.

Wow, this is worse than the Australian movie industry, Heroes over Europe scored 5.0 on here and it won 3 awards - go figure.

@Phacet Hell no the world would not have had Medieval 2: Total War otherwise and what would bioshock would have been like?

The list shows why developers are shutting up here, besides Puzzle Quest there was no decent Australian made game released. We need Blue Tongue to make a new De Blob game.

I am an aussie and I have never heard some of these games before. These sound pretty bad to the rest of the games worldwide.
